Toukiden Kiwami_logo

Last year PlayStation Vita owners were graced with a Oni filled world, players were sent to save the world, and hopefully be the last bit of hope that humanity would ever have. Starting on March 31st, players in North America will be able to once more take on the Oni harde within the follow up to Toukiden: The Age of Demons. In turn, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force have also released a five minute anime trailer that introduces some of the new content such as new characters, Oni, and weapon types. In turn, Koei Tecmo has also announced that the official website has launched which can be found here.

This new game will feature new updates, vast improvements, and popular features that have been requested by fans of the title. Rather than just an expansion; Toukiden: Kiwami also offers all of the content formerly released with The Age of Demons, including a deeper as well as extensive Character Creation Mode, and numerous additions enriching the experience through a new story, game content, which now includes over 300 characters (Mitama) will also help strengthen their team and defeat enemies. For those unfamiliar, Mitama are used in order to help upgrade weapons, offer new capabilities, and even stat bonuses as players seek to save the world as well as gather special resources to craft gear including armor and weapons.

Chthonian Fiend_01

Toukiden: Kiwami once more finds itself set within the backdrop of various historical periods of Japan, which is where Kiwami will continue picking up the tale of where humanity’s last stand left off. As the PlayStation 4 prepares for its launch of Toukiden: Kiwami, players will get to experience the story from the beginning, and introduces players new to the series a chance to explore the rather large, and Oni-ridden world that is on the brink of destruction. According to Koei Tecmo, Omega Force has almost doubled the size of the original game so that new and returning players can continue their mission from where Toukiden: The Age of Demons had left off and leaves them to discover all that is new in Kiwami.

For those new to the series, Toukiden: Kiwami will also feature a new and upgraded extensive multiplayer mode. This means players will be taking on bigger, meaner, and more powerful Oni than ever, and will allow them to take on various missions while meeting with new NPC’s or even visiting the games rather large and enjoyable multiplayer mode which allows a team of up to four to slay and banish Oni together.

Toukiden: Kiwami will also include an extensive multiplayer mode. Players are always encouraged to attack the most powerful Oni and, will again have the choice between various NPCs or ideally, a cooperative multiplayer mode that allows for a team of up to four Slayers to and banish a demon together.

Official Summary from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force:

In the deeply rich world of Toukiden, Demons (Oni) have hid in the shadows aiming to torment mankind. Through history, a secret caste of warriors, the Slayers, have been trained to dispose of the demonic threat before it could consume the world. However, an event called the ‘Awakening’ caused rifts to appear in space and time, causing places that had long disappeared from the world to resurface, unleashing  hordes of demons that relentlessly hunted humans.

These demons would consume the souls of those they killed and imprison the ones of brave heroes. Using their souls, Oni can regenerate at a rapid rate and only Slayers are trained in the proper way to battle them.

As the extinction of humanity was not far from reality, the Slayers opened their villages as sanctuaries, to protect those who escaped, and provided a last line of defense against the horror.

The player’s role is to complete various missions, strengthen his relationships with the other warriors in the village and eventually start battling the largest of the Oni to banish them back to their dimension and free the souls of the heroes they’ve trapped. In turn, when these souls are free, they stay with the player and provide him with a variety of equipable abilities for his weapons.

Toukiden: Kiwami is published by KOEI TECMO America in North America and will launch on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and the PlayStation®Vita on March 31, 2015. This game has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Authors Note: Stay tuned as we will be re-reviewing Toukiden: The Age of Demon’s and will be presenting a look at the game with all DLC content loaded. We will announce soon when the review will be posted and hope it will help prepare you for the upcoming title.

Review: Citizens of Earth – Electing a Fun Time

Review by Dustin Murphy

Citizens_of_Earth_Logo

Pros:
-Very easy control scheme to work
-Graphics remain almost identical across all platforms
-Recruiting characters adds high amounts of diversity between all characters
-Dialogue remains hysterical and well-knitted for its sense of humour

Cons:
-PS Vita and PS4 do not share a cross-save function
-Framerate issues on PS Vita will be noticeable when exploring

Originally posted on Kickstarter as a game with a rather interesting concept, Citizen’s of Earth was one that did not reach its goals, and ultimately seemed to die out because of it. This time around it’s not the case thanks to well renowned publisher Atlus. Intent on seeing the game succeed, the developer took some notes that do deserve an honourable mention; first and foremost is the mentioning that fans of Earthbound will definitely be able to take a bit of a notice on the game itself. With revolving around recruiting new team members, taking on enemies in the open world, and even solving random “missions/quests” players will up their antee against any enemies that seek to stop them in their path to victory. But does a game that focus on classic takes and mechanics as well as other deciding benefactors help this game succeed?

CoE_Screenshots (113)

Starting on a high-note you, the player, are introduced to the new Vice-President of the World whom has decided to return home and relax after a rather long campaign. Much like other classic RPG’s of the sort, the game allows for players to edit every characters name to their choice. Doing this allows players to enjoy a focus on a game that matters to them in some form of another. Though that’s only the tip of the iceberg. After naming your starting party, it’s time to take on one thing – righting all the wrongs in the world and ultimately making the citizen’s happy. This includes taking on mediocre quests such as finding a Mascot’s spirit, helping a woman get your publicity out with her pictures by showing off the good deeds done, and even helping programmers get their equipment back from their work. Though this is oddly not done by the Vice President himself as he stands back and lets his family and cohorts do the fighting all on their own. Sounds about right though for the personality that this character is making a satire of.

Much like in previous games, players will remain exploring, unlocking new zones, and even helping citizens with their troubles at hand. As stated this is all done by grinding out quests, which some actually require players to just grind out certain enemy types, but while doing so there is something helpful that happens. Players will find themselves earning experience in order to up their party members and making them all the more powerful. Doing this means new abilities to take out enemies, easier time fighting high level opponents, and well quite a bit more of a twist on what a character’s role is in the long run.

CoE_Screenshots (59)

For some fans, they will easily be able to notice the games solid nod towards Pokémon with the games “Daycare” system, which in turn in this game is replaced by sending characters to class where they can learn new abilities, levelup, and even come out more useful than before. One thing that is troubling though is the game having a very limited party system, which leaves players with only three members, and sets them to focus on a team build throughout the game. Another one? Players will easily find themselves swapping out team members on a constant basis in order to fight through certain enemy types at an easier rate. This isn’t required, but definitely is advisable so that players know their strong and weak points through each zone as new enemies will be exposed through the adventure in doing so. This also means that players will get rather familiar with this games rather unique energy building combat system. Instead of starting out with a form of energy or ‘mana’, players are given an energy point, which allows for their party members to ‘cast’ a unique ability that pertains to them. This can include a healing ability, a stun ability, a defense ability or even something as simple as a elemental type ability that will cause enemies to find themselves quickly defeated and getting an energy restoral for using an enemy’s elemental weakness. It can easily said that this is a direct nod to some of the games most successful RPG’s and even a renowned card game to date.

CoE_Screenshots (84)

Even as mentioned before, the game nodes towards some of the industries largest RPG’s out there such as Pokémon, Earthbound and for some fans the card game Magic the Gathering due to the games turn based energy system. During combat, players will notice the rather psychedelic and trippy wavy colour themes that will remind people of something from Earthbound or a rather trippy poster someone could buy at a store. Unfortunately, to some, this is quite easily a headache, which is something I learned all too quick after having spent countless hours between both the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 versions. Unfortunately, a lot of this was due to having to progress through the campaign on two different platforms to ensure a solid review could be given. Sadly, many of the games many focuses, features, and ideas are taken from other games, which works quite well. Though it would have been interesting to see a game that didn’t use as many classic tropes as it did and took to a system all of its own. Granted this has been done with a mind blowing art style that sticks out rather graciously against most modern games, and even gives players a classic feel for games that made themselves well known on the Sega and SNES days of 16-bit and 32-bit systems.

CoE_Screenshots (95)

In a way the entire game itself is rather charming, fun, and even was a nice way to kick up my feet and explore a uniquely crafted world that offers plenty of diversity. Unfortunately all that is charming is not all that great. Some of the games features are ones that can be quite troubling and allow for folks to find themselves cringing in turn. Even with a rather unique art style that is always popping out, I found myself frustrated with the quest system, which fails to mention who players should turn their quest into, which means it’s time to do the retro way of quest tracking: pen and paper. Yes, you read that write, I ended up finding myself writing quite a few notes until I got the groove of what quest went where, and how to complete it. After having done each quest twice, it wasn’t hard to get the hang of things after sometime, but it did feel unnatural to have to keep my own personal quest tracker where the game should have provided one.

With all the aforementioned features and even interesting parts of the game, Citizen’s of Earth is fun as well as hysterical in many ways. Though at times it tries to take itself way too seriously or not serious enough, which at times makes the game feel unnatural or even a bit phony at times. Though with that aside the game does a great job at the nods it gives from other games and makes them work quite well. This is something I find rather enjoyable as the game itself seems to work quite well and gives a rather enjoyable experience across both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The only downside? Buying the game across multiple platforms means that the game has a restrictive save access that will lock it to that version only due to the lack of a cross-save feature. Even with that aside the game itself is a solid title that Atlus should pride themselves upon publishing.

Review Score: 7 out of 10

Authors Note: Our review copy was provided to us on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita by Atlus and was reviewed on the two platforms. The game is now available in digital format on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U for 14.99 USD.

Inside Gaming Culture: Men, Women, and Being a Gamer Pt. 1

Written by Dustin Murphy

Authors Note: This content does focus on sexism as well as harassment of both male and females. However, part 1 focuses solely on females while part 2 will focus on men and feature identical questions that will be changed to fit a male perspective.

When it comes to gaming, there is something much bigger than just the act of gaming, which leads to how gaming has brewed into its own form of culture. Fans of games can tell you the name of voice actors, directors, producers, artists, animators, level designers, and even some of the worlds most rare titles that have built a fan base for being so rare. However, there’s a bit of an issue that has come to the surface in the recent years, and because of feminist Anita Sarkeesian, it has come to light; sexism in the gaming culture as well as the industry.

Having sat down and watched all her videos that I could muster up, it was hard not to see some of her points as valid, especially the over sexualization of women that does tend to set a mindset for younger generations and this is not something that should be taken lightly. As a gamer of 28 years, it’s hard not to say that there has been a change from how characters and women in such roles have changed, and this can easily be seen from characters such as Princess Zelda compared to her masculine transformation Shiek or even Bayonetta whom has been represented as a bit of a curvaceous and rather sassy female lead.

Though we also see strong suited characters such as Anya Stroud from Gears of War, Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII, Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII (series), and even Samus Aran from Metroid stood out. Each of these characters have shown a sensual side to them while remaining at heart – a strong female role without having had to use their appearance as a way to draw male attention towards the sexualized theme that may or may not have been put in place.

Anita_Sarkeesian

After having sat down and looked through hundreds of images that are concept pieces, screenshots, and even replayed or re-watched cutscenes from games, there was a question that had dawned in the light of having watched Anita Sarkeesian and even Jennie Bharaj’s videos, but also having talked to fellow gamers whom just happened to be female. The question that popped up and has yet to be rationalized was this; do women feel sexualized as gamers due to how women are portrayed in video games or is it the mindset that gaming started out in ways as a male dominant hobby?

After reading several articles online, I realized just how hard some women have had it coming up as a gamer and enjoying a hobby as well as a culture that has in recent years gained a lot of steam. Thanks to outlets such as Steam, the gaming industry has come to show that the population of male to female gamers is almost at a solid 50/50 ratio. What does this mean? Women in recent years (if not having been there all along) have become a strong voice in gaming, but with having a strong voice also comes strong criticism.

Jennie_Bharaj

Jennie Bharaj can be found on our YouTube Channel JennieBharaj. This photo is copyrighted by her.

I took some time to have dug around through multiple “personalities” of the gaming media to find that indeed, women in ways have become a bit sexualized due to the way they feel in order to be accepted by men and or women as ‘gamers’. Some of these consisted of pages where I found women posing in such ways that their chest was almost exposed, and the way they were posing would definitely draw some attention.

Other pages were less likely to show such poses, instead I found women simply showing what games they play, what they’re excited to play, and simple pictures of them in less revealing manners. This type of ‘weight’ was rather equal in numbers, granted I only took to digging through a few dozen pages, but the outcome was the same none-the-less. This lead to a question that came to mind; “Is this how women feel when they take to gaming? That to be accepted they have to indulge men or are feel that they must hide their gender?”

When asking myself about this, I find myself all-the-more troubled by the question at hand. This in-part is because of what has been happening in the recent years due to attention that had been drawn up by the social media and activist groups that feel as if women had become a sore spot within the community. The truth? If anything, us men have become the problem within the community, and the ways of a ‘men only hobby’ has begun to change as women have become even more prevalent to enjoy video games like others have. Why is this? The community has begun to flourish and with gaming becoming a rather affordable adventure that seeks to help both men and women become gamers, I was dumbfounded by the reaction people had given most female and even some men when finding out their hobby sat around the idea of enjoying video games.

Taking it upon myself to hang at our local game store, I decided to sit down (metaphorically stated here) and ask a few of the shoppers if the game was indeed for themselves or for someone else. Nine times out of the ten times I asked? I was told that they weren’t purchasing the game for themselves. After they had done so, I revealed to them that I am a journalist, and that I would like to ask them what they really bought the game for? The ratio changed quite a bit to six out of ten of the women having indeed bought the game for themselves. The question next? Why did they hide whom they bought the games for?

The answer was shocking. They felt ashamed to admit that they were gamers as most men instantly cling onto them or make them feel bad to be a gamer; that women in ways have become a ‘sexualised’ figure within the gaming culture. That answer was a bit dumbfounding, but understandable when I reflected back upon my earlier noting of the Facebook and Social Media pages I had seen of gamer women whom had posted close to revealing pictures of themselves while gaming or even some posing in ways that would have definitely not been suitable for a work environment. In ways, this could be what is to blame for why women are having a hard time being accepted as part of a growing culture that has only gotten bigger as newer generations have joined in.

After having taken a bit of time, I decided to recently ask a few questions to fellow gamers whom are indeed female gamers. The Q&A (more of a pole) consisted of several questions, and spots for them to answer. This is where I was indeed a bit more surprised by how they felt as gamers as the answers did variate, but some not as much. The responses though were varied, and at times rather staggering on how the women came out. Their names are being kept anonymous for the safety of their well-being so that they are not flamed and or targeted for their responses regarding this article. When asked if being a gamer is all fun and games as it should be, but we know there’s always a reaction to coming out as a ‘gamer’.

Do you feel like you must hide it like a dirty secret or have you come out and told people you are a gamer – their response varied. One of the ladies responded with “I have never hide the fact I was a gamer. It is the number one thing I love to do. Some people like to go bowling or to a movie. I would rather sit at home and have a gaming marathon,”, while others responded with answers such as, “ If the conversation comes up, I like to join in and mention that I game as well, but I also don’t mention it just to get attention or rub it in peoples faces. Honestly, I think some flack that we as female gamers get is because some girls, gamers or not, are trying to just get attention out of it, making us seem like a rare species or something, but we really, truly do exist,” and gave a small laugh.

Though another responded, “I don’t hide it, but I’m a very open person. No one assumes I am a gamer, but that doesn’t offend me. They are usually shocked when they find out, but that doesn’t offend me either. People only find out when they ask about my hobbies or free time usage. It’s not something I advertise, I just mention it when the subject comes up. If a television show I like comes up in conversation, I mention something. This is similar.”

Though sadly not all responses were the same. There were some that were less likely, and even souring, which left me just shaking my head when I heard her response, “I’ve had to hide being a gamer. When I was younger in Middle School, the preps would tease me for being a ‘geek or a ‘nerd’. I’d get bullied by the ‘preps’ or the ‘cool kids’ because I did something ‘girls aren’t supposed to do’. It was a dirty habit or so they made it seem. It was troubling, but I overcame it and still game to this day.”

Her response was troubling as I got a few more replies emailed or even spoken to me this way. Have we really shunned gamers this hard? It was impressive to see though that it wasn’t just the guys that made her ‘hobby’ hard to enjoy. It was also the women whom targeted her and made her hobby troubling for her to enjoy. After getting the question out of the way from several of these ladies I decided to ask them what was their initial reaction to the fact you like games and If they haven’t told people, how long have they been keeping it hidden incase of bad reactions.

Their reactions? Almost all identical, one going on to state, “Well the older generation mostly tell me to be careful, games can rot your brain and are addicting. Lol. Everyone else thinks it’s awesome,” but another one went on to say, “There are three types of reactions that I’ve noticed: First; The Instant Boner: The guy who actively searches for gamer girls to date due to his gaming lifestyle and social awkwardness. This dude is most likely to be a creeper. Second is the Insecure Sexist Asshole: The guy who is cool with chicks playing video games, as long as they know their place. They can never beat them at anything, and their gaming knowledge is slim to none. These guys are most likely to have no idea who you’re talking about when you mention Randy Pitchford, Aaryn Flynn, Jennifer Hale, etc. the works, the faces behind the games themselves. Third is the Good Guy Greg’s: The guy who plays with you, no matter how good or bad you are, because you are his friend…Not his girlfriend, not his potential girlfriend, but your friend. These guys normally think with the head attached to their necks. They send you updates on your favorite titles because that’s what friends do. They don’t treat you any differently because you have a vaggy,” others went on to simply state that people accepted them naturally for who they are, that they have friends that typically want to join them on games such as Minecraft, Sims, Diablo, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Destiny, and even Battlefield – that their friends don’t care.

To lighten the mood a bit I decided to ask each of the women as well if their friends don’t care, do they ever ask you what games you play, join you, or simply just watch as they play. Their answers were as expected, but heartening to find out one of them stating, “I don’t have any friends who are not gamers. I can’t even think of one,”, another stating that, “Many of my friends, if not all of them, are gamers. Male and female. If a conversation comes up, we’ll all discuss our favorites and it’s actually quite surprising some of the titles that people enjoy. Gamers tend to really blow conformities out of the water, like you’ll see big strong manly men that like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon and petite, soft spoken girls that like Call of Duty. I love it,” while another stated, “No one has never had a problem with me gaming. In fact my family is who thought me to play. My mom got us a Nintendo as kids. Later to bond with my dad and his new wife we would all play on the PS2. When I moved in with my sister she got me my first live account and thought me to play Halo. In other words games have been apart of me growing up,” which went onto show that they were easily accepted; something that needs to occur more these days.

After taking a small break we returned to our questionnaire, the next question I had asked was knowing that they’d probably been gaming for a rather long time, and how their friends reacted to them as a kid gamer, and if they had a problem with it, one went to state. “My friends were cool with it because we played together a lot of the time, or I showed them games like FF and they wanted to watch (my friends were all awesome). However, in elementary school I got picked on a lot. I think if I had just played Legend of Zelda and Mario things would have been different but I was into FF and Chrono Cross so people just didn’t get it. I got teased and mocked but I never let it get to me because my fantasy worlds were something they could never understand and I felt sorry for them,” another stated, “ while another stated, “Back in my day (and I’m not really that old. lol) if you were a gamer, you liked video games. It wasn’t really that much of a big deal on what gender you were. It was either you liked them or you didn’t. Simple as that.

With their answers being pretty cut and clear, it was noticeable that their getting started was easily accepted by others and that they enjoyed it. Though with the lightheartedness it was time to get serious again. With feminism and even the controversies that they’ve stirred, it was time to ask the women what they thought about this and how they felt about it. So the question was simple.

We know some of them may or may not know about a recent controversy that has been flared by gaming feminists. Some of them are well known for their YouTube channels and their time in the spotlight. If you know or have read about them – I asked them if they feel they are doing good for female gamers or if they think they’ve caused negative attention towards women who game.

Their answers varied quite a bit – one stating that, “This is a fence riding kind of issue with me. On one hand, I do believe sexism is an issue, no matter what we’re talking about. It’s an issue that affects everything, not just gaming. A good point is raised but I think some of them are trying to blow it all out of proportion just to divide us or getting too soft and ‘politically correct’ with things but at the end of the day it boils down to this: you play because you enjoy it,” another going on to say, “I hate female gamers who label themselves as female gamers. I worked at a video game retailer for 3 years with another girl who was just like me, we both loved to game our entire lives and we could spot a fake a mile away. I don’t know, I feel like if I wanted to, I could jump on camera and talk about video games and get famous fast. I could be famous in 2 minutes, and so could all of the other gamers out there who have vaggies and take good care of their appearance, but we aren’t attention whores. Big difference between a gamer and a an attention whore,” one of the other ladies stated, “I have not seen anything on other female gamers. I more focus on setting higher standard though my action, then worrying about what other lady gamers are doing.

The answers weren’t as staggering as I thought, but it definitely shows that there is a bit of concern regarding this matter and that it definitely does need a bit of attention put towards it in order to help solve the issue. With the topic at hand, I decided to ask them about cosplayers and if they felt if these cosplayers made it harder for them to be apart of gaming culture.

Their answers? They definitely showed concern to some, one of them saying, “Yes. I rant about this constantly, yes yes and yes. However, if the character they’re dressing as is slutty, then go for it, but don’t over sex your character or costume when it’s not true to the character, you might as well tape a sign to your face that say ‘Will show tits for attention’ UGH,” another saying, “We all want attention. It’s human nature to crave others attention. Some do it negativly, some do it positively. I think some females can go a little over the top with it but that’s just my opinion. If we as gamers start judging everyone on their cosplay and what they want to do, that’s ever dividing not just the gaming community but then the cosplay community as well. What’s the point in cosplaying if you can’t feel accepted in what you chose to do? I know heavy set folks are battling this same issue,” one of the others just stating the easiest and most unconcerned answer possible, “I have not seen anything on other female gamer. I more focus on setting higher standard though my action, then worrying about what other lady gamers are doing,” while another stated that she simply felt that cosplayers need to be aware of how they represent the women who do game since they do play a role in their social world.

This time I decided to continue that topic by stating that we all know there are a lot of gamers, and some of them are even amazing women. Though I asked them how they felt about the women who decide to use their capability to sexualize themselves for attention and that it’s a problem and how they felt about it, but also if they felt that it put a negative view on women in the gaming culture.

Their answers were indeed something that others should take note of, “It disgusts and angers me. I know there are more important issues out there, but this issue keeps me from sleeping at night. All that bullshit I had to go through as a child, getting made fun of for playing games and watching anime, and now it’s labeled as ‘hot’ and ‘cool’. Screw society and SCREW The Big Bang Theory,” which shows her frustration as one went on to show her frustration as well as she stated – “Yes. Women and girls who do this upset me greatly. Live gaming is about competition and making friends. To try and find a boyfriend or just to flirt for attention is wrong. I even seen women do this so that guys will ‘baby’ them. It’s insane,” another stating, “Being as long in the gaming community as I have, you tend to get a feel for those that really do enjoy it and those that are doing it just for attention. I don’t like feeding the trolls and your money and attention does a lot of talking on its own. If someone is trying to ruffle your feathers, completely ignoring them so they’re not getting the attention they’re so desperately seeking tends to make them go away.

This has proven a bit of an issue as it is notable that several of these women don’t appreciate the attention that these women draw upon such women. I even asked if they thought if these women should think twice, and one stated simply, “No, because if they think twice they’ll wear less. They know what they’re doing and they love it,” while another stated, “Definitely. You could end up being harassed or even stocked if you are not careful. Flirting should be held for people you know personally,” and a third stating that – “This is something else that can go further than just gaming. Seems like in this day and age people don’t posses a lot of empathy for others, it’s all about yourself, getting by or getting rich and some don’t think before they jump into action, think, or even type. If one stops and thinks about what they’re doing, they’ll realize that it may not be the best thing to do, out of sheer respect for the others. Just my two cents on that.

Their statement provided a sense that these women do feel that the current portrayal as women in gaming is being tampered with by women who try to get the attention, that fill the roles that are proper to cause harassment and a bad look for women who are part of the gaming community. In turn I decided to ask a few of the women who do this how they feel about gaming in this manner and one simply stated the following, “I don’t do it for attention. I do it because it’s something they enjoy me doing, something that feels right, and I honestly enjoy it. I’ve been gaming for a long time and unfortunately this is the only way I feel accepted,” sadly several others also replied comments very close to hers, which made me almost bite my lip and wonder; is there a way to find a middle ground without them feeling that they have to sexualize or use their gender to get attention? The answer for me was easy – yes there is. Though that is a discussion that I would need to sit down and have with all the ladies in the same room and someone to mediate incase the discussion got too heated.

With harassment being an issue in the society,  I decided to turn the tables a bit. It was time to ask them if they’ve ever been a victim to harassment. If they have, what the reactions most commonly were if they were online having a gaming session or at a retailer, one of them stating “I haven’t ever been harassed because I’m not a slut about it. I prove my place and destroy anyone who challenges me. I earn respect, not jizz,” while another stated that she hasn’t actually been harassed, which shows that it’s not always going to happen, but another did state “Back when I first start game online in 2006 it was a big deal that I was a female.  Guys would ask ‘are you a girl?’ and then they would try flirting or adding me as a friend. It was like they found a new life form. Some guys would even try talking dirty or send you nasty messages. Not so much anymore. The female gamer population has grown a lot since I first started playing.

The last reply had shown that not all women have been harassed, but sadly, the media has shown that there is a much darker side as women have been harassed to the point they have fled their homes, hid their family, and have even left the gaming community all together. From personal experience I have had several women who game and are friends leave due to harassment, sexual pictures being sent, and a lack of support from moderators of the online communities. Unfortunately, this puts it roughly out of 3/6 women (during my small questionnaire so far) have been harassed in one form or another, but that was earlier in their gaming time, and it has since started to die out as women have become a rather large part of the gaming community. Though the problem still exists and one that seemingly needs to be snuffed out when possible, but the only way that can happen? Proactive and positive reinforcement from a majority of the community as a whole.

In order to close out my conversation with them, I decided to ask how they felt about being a gamer, if there was a message for the younger generation that they’d like to deliver. All of them had something to say. So lets just put these in bullet form:

  • I have been babysitting for years, and the older I get, the more I am noticing all children playing video games. It’s more common for young girls to play these days and ten years from now, I honestly feel that it will be a much more accepted thing. It will be more like Japan and Korea, where it’s just the norm and everyone does it.
  • I am proud to be a gamer! I’m very good at it. It’s definitely one thing I will do with my daughter. As for the younger generation of female gamers – don’t ever let any guys or other girls bully or belittle you, everyone was new at gaming at one point. It takes practice sometimes. Mess around and learn. Have fun and enjoy. That is what video games are about.
  • I love being a gamer and everyone in it’s community. With the recent issues of sexism coming up, I’ve been humbled at how everyone has rallied together, regardless of background, sex, race or anything in between. It’s one thing that we can all agree on, that we all can enjoy. My message for our younger generation: expand your genres, be unbiased and respectful to others, but above all, never forget WHY you call yourself a gamer. For the games.
  • Take your time, learn the games, make friends. Realize that women aren’t just play things because of what a few others have done. We deserve respect and equality among you. As gamers, our gender is something else, we are gamers. There is not a difference between us being a female or us being a guy. We’re your team mates, enemies, and or the person that can teach you a lot of things. We’re here to stay and we definitely think it’s important to be noted of. I think the younger generation definitely needs to take time to enjoy games, not worry about graphics, online components, but to feel thankful to something they aren’t entitled to.

With these closing statements I would like to thank all the women who assisted in making this article complete and I appreciate their understanding of me placing a form of anonymity to them so that they can be safe from any possible ill acts that may be enacted towards them. Part 2 will be coming up next Saturday and we will take a look at how male gamers take a look at the same questions fit for the gender!

Man, this week has been a busy one, and game companies are certainly flooding the headlines with some major announcements. These announcements pertain almost down to just Nintendo and some leaked info surrounding Bungie’s successful, but highly criticized game – Destiny. We’ve also seen an amazing announcement from Koei Tecmo that we will be mentioning in here, but also giving it an article of its own thanks to the PR teams we work with.

So first up, this week we saw Nintendo’s new Nintendo Direct, which was a big shocker in both good and bad ways. As many of you have read, watched, and probably heard about going around; Nintendo has given their New Nintendo 3DS a release date for North America, which is February 13th, or rather almost a month away. The ugly side to this? The handheld costs 199.99 USD and does not come with a charger, but is also only going to be sold as the New Nintendo 3DS XL variant. So what does this mean? You’ll have to buy a charger if you don’t already own a 3DS, which means your two handhelds? They need to play nice together. This also means those who wanted interchangeable faceplates may have to suffer and wait a bit longer since there’s no definitive release date in the foreseeable future at this point. The bright side to that is Nintendo hasn’t exactly shut down the idea of this being completely possible as of yet.

Monster_Hunter_4_3DSXL

Alongside the announcements from Nintendo we also got to see a mind boggling sale out in just a matter of an hour for the Majora’s Mask bundle, which sold out and some went straight to bidding markets at outrageous prices already. On the flipside, Capcom in turn also announced their sleek new Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate bundle, which features a beautifully crafted New Nintendo 3DS in a silver and bluish-grey paint style, but also the game pre-loaded so that fans can instantly hop into the action and go to town on some rather brutal enemies. We also got to see that Xenoblade Chronicles has gotten some nifty work done and stands out to its previous version; that being said – get one if you haven’t already. Just prepared to bite down on a few extra bucks to get that charger if you don’t have one yet.

We also got to see a few launch titles for the New Nintendo 3DS that will be taking advantage of the new amiibo collection that Nintendo has recently released and has taken the world by storm. We now know that Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. will for sure be releasing on North American New Nintendo 3DS’ and regular Nintendo 3DS, but will be taking care of the amiibo functionality. We’ve also got to see a few others such as Sega’s now announced Ace Combat Horizon Legacy+, which is the first re-imagining of that title, and will feature special jets specifically designed just for its New Nintendo 3DS launch.

ACAHLP_3DS_2DPackfront_Front

With all of Nintendo’s mind bending announcements, we’ve also gotten a bit of news going out from multiple places (you can read the original article here:) about Veteran World of Warcraft players, those playing for ten years only, are getting recognized by Blizzard. These folks (if you are one you may want to check your inbox and mailbox) are getting treated to a rather uniquely crafted statue that they can put up on their shelves and let it make their other collectibles almost shrivel in comparison; that’s unless you have a Cyborg Ninja from Metal Gear Solid of course. This is nice to see that Blizzard has taken a moment to help recognize their founding players in order to keep the game going, but also as a simple gesture or a thank you as you may call it. This also comes with news that there has been a bit of trouble with their new MOBA called Overwatch. It has seen a bit of trouble in licensing due to a company also called Innovis wanting to use the same name to trademark their tactical app for airsoft players (you can check out the Polygon article here: Blizzard’s Overwatch hits trademark problem). Hopefully this gets resolved and both parties can come to an agreement of who gets the name and who doesn’t. I’m sure they’ll both be playing nice in this matter.

In other news, we’ve also learned there’s been a bit of information circulating about the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XV Duscae demo that will be releasing with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. In the demo many players were hoping to drive the bro-esque road trip title by driving the car that is seen many times within the demo. Well don’t pack those bags and plan to hit the road just yet. According to PlayStation Lifestyles Article, game director Hajime Tabata has come out and said that the team had originally planned to put the car into the demo, but at that changed as they want players to get a feel for their new seamless world they’ve built. They want players to get a feel for the game and know that when they step into the new open world that the game they crafted so carefully, is indeed a Final Fantasy world. So prepare only to get a feel for the game and prepare so that when you can’t drive, you won’t be disappointed. This is not the first time Square Enix has changed something in a demo to make it more suitable for all crowds. Hopefully this means the game will relive up to the hype that was built up almost nine years ago with the games original announcement as the name Final Fantasy XIII: Versus, which takes place in the same world as Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2/Lightning Returns and Type-0 HD. Hopefully when they finish the Fabula Nova Crystallis Saga, players heads won’t be spinning and they’ll be able to know what takes place and where. If not, those who’ve never played the previously mentioned will not be lost around what’s going on.

New Oni_Snowflame_01

Another big announcement (at least to us) is an upcoming title that has been announced for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game when originally released was a niche game, it filled the spot that Monster Hunter had left wide open for fans of the series, and eventually became a rather large success and filled that bit of need players had. Since we haven’t done an article about it (yet – it’s being edited) we’ve decided in a way to announce the game for Koei Tecmo here! As of March 31st, players will once more get to go on a hunt for demon’s in the smash hit Toukiden: Kwami. The title is an expanded version of Toukiden: The Age of Demons that initially released on the PlayStation Vita last year as an exclusive. This time around, it’s getting a bit of an upgrade, which means new monsters, new story, more Mitama (helpful spirits) the original content, cross-play between the two platforms, and even cross-save functionality between the two. This means there has been a lot going on and we are only beginning to see the information come in. Till then? Stay tuned on that bit.

On top of this we’re also excited to announce that some of our former writers have moved onto cover gaming culture, but also still review games! Before we mention what and how they’ve done what they’ve done, we want to first and foremost thank them for their contributions to our team during their time here. Those guys are Jesse Olvera our co-founder and former member, Aaron Johnson, our former founding writer and reviewer Josh Turner, Johnny Walker Red, Kennard Daniel Prim, and lastly our former Editor-in-Chief – Casey Todd. They’ve moved onto continuing writing, reviewing, and working on their so far rather awesome editorials and podcast that’s currently up on SoundCloud and they are seeking to get put on iTunes as a weekly upload. You can check them out over at their Facebook Page called Beyond the Pixels (or click the name to be taken to their page). We hope you can give them a like, check out their content which varies quite a bit from our own, and give both our teams some support!

In case it was missed we also have a new review up for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition! Head there now if you haven’t already given it a look over. We hope you stay tuned in as we have a new review coming for you Tuesday afternoon. Until then we have a few new articles that are ready to go up and we hope you have a safe and wonderful weekend! Till next time.

-Remains uncensored unlike its Nintendo 64 predecessor
-Graphics have been upgraded to current day standards
-OpenGL Support for the remade content and DOSBox for the Classic Version
-PC version supports WASD and mouse for more modernized shooter fans.

Cons:
-PS3 and PS Vita version both suffer from some framerate stuttering
-Multiplayer for PS3 and PS Vita version sometimes don’t work
-Intermittent soundbugs that can occur. Sometimes requires an app restart on Vita or game restart on PS3.

Duke_Nukem_Megaton_SC_03

What do you do when a game such as this smash hit classic re-releases on PC, PS3 and PlayStation Vita? You download it, launch it, and sit back for some alien arse kicking. This is something that Duke Nukem is all familiar to when he isn’t throwing his one liners around and showing enemies just how hard his balls of steel really are. Remaining as satirical as it was for the “dumb blonde” antics that Duke has become well established upon remains all the same in this new version. Reimagined and upgraded in many ways to current standards by the teams over at 3D Realms (original work), General Arcade, and Abstraction Games have done to make this port and updated version possible. So it’s hard not to see why this game made it out the way it did.

If you were like me, you grew up hearing this gum chewing badass, well when he’s not out of gum. Players will always remember him and his constant knack for stomping alien balls in for one reason – the babes. Yep, he’s at it once more, but not completely in the way I remember him. When I was growing up, the game had this option for parents to lock down Duke Nukem 3D so children couldn’t play; this meant backing up save files, uninstalling, re-installing, and hoping my parents didn’t find out. Luckily? The game doesn’t need to be watered down with mild editing to filter out Duke’s adult content.

Returning in much of the way he did before, Duke has become an iconic character of sorts for the first person shooter genre, and that is one reason this game deserved the remake it got, one that was pulled off rather well. Like before, players are once more rounding up a rather 10-weapon loadout without reload times; something that has become common practice these days; that also features weapons that would make almost no sense in todays modern games. The game itself still boasts one thing that most games outside of DOOM, Wrack, and a few other retro style shooters do, and that is hidden areas. The game itself contains some among the best of the best where players will fight enemies, grab off the wall rewards, and maybe even find a babe to make Dukes day.

Duke_Nukem_Megaton_SC02

Like everyone knows, Duke Nukem is filled with references, puns, and even a full-on-camp of one liners that would make almost any gamers head spin. Among them however, are the ones that make any gamers head fill with a recollection of nostalgia. Though it’s hard for gamers not even to laugh at a bit of them while smashing an alien’s head in after having made him fall to his knees and shake at the sight of this guy. For many fans however, this game will be one for the newer audiences that may or may not captivate them the way it would have at one time due to the outdated jokes and references in which he has targeted. Though for some – it may just be that little bit of a brush off that bit of crude humour that will leave one chuckling or even cackling like a hyena.

With all jokes and puns aside, the game was solid. For games back when 3D Realms designed it, there wasn’t much in the means of storytelling beside a few mumbles from Duke Nukem, and a rather large careen of enemies coming your way. This is where Duke Nukem once more begins to shine thanks to nearly every room hiding something within it such as fire extinguishers, gas cans, hidden door switches that cause some event, or just a hidden lock code for a locked door that needed to be opened. Even though this game is 20 years old, it’s not surprising to see that the Megaton Edition has once more revived one of gamins great classics. Unfortunately, it’s one of the few of the genre that has actually made it through time since developers have yet to try and revitalize games such as Hexen, Heretic, Quake, Quake 2, DOOM, DOOM II, Final DOOM, DOOM 64, System Shock, Dai Katana and many more. Though this game should help fill the need for the others until they get re-released or modded to operate on modern computers for those that don’t.

Though now the question is, what are you buying for a game of this type that is flows on stages where you hunt secrets, kill the enemy, try to beat the time trial, and even pick up a few guns or two? The price is a not-so-steep 9.99 USD. This is for what is considered all four episodes that released, well “official” episodes for Duke Nukem 3D. Each of these episodes features between 8-10 levels, and each are rather unique. For those that are unaware, 3 of them were developed independently and follow a rather unique and Duke Nukem twisted theme to them. Such as Duke Caribbean: Life’s a Beach where players will find themselves as Duke on a tropical vacation beating enemies down with Super Soakers, Water Pistols, and well Shotgun Supersoakers, which isn’t complete without enemies whom are decked out in the attire to match the occasion. Though my personal favorite? Is probably the Duke: Nuclear Winter, which features enemies fitted out as snowmen, Rudolph, or simply dressed up so that they are wearing only a Santa hat and their normal gear. Oh, did I mention Duke himself invading the North Pole? Yea he does and it’s an interesting take on top of Dukes normal antics.

Duke_Nukem_Megaton_SC01

Unfortunately the one that seems to drag its feet a bit is Duke it out in D.C, which feels as though the developer itself had fallen a bit bored with the game. Though none of these are new, which isn’t surprising with a 1997 release date, it’s still worth saying that they were rather difficult to find when going to the store, unfortunately back then we didn’t have steam as a convenient source to download from on PC. However, this time around it’s a pleasant sight for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita owners as this is the first time the title has managed to be released on them. Thankfully the developers did take note of how to implement controls into the PlayStation Vita’s touch screen. Swiping left or right or even tapping the touch screen allows players to sift through their weapons quickly and with ease; this means no worrying completely about the weapon that pops up next. So this is quite a bit of a welcomed sight. Except for when dying and using the Megaton Edition’s new rewind system or figuring out what weapon is next among your ten weapon roster while taking on a horde of enemies that are careening over each other to get to you. This is fixed with the games ‘rewind’ feature that will allow players to go back in time, pick a safe spot, and plan for the enemy that killed them previously. This is something I found myself doing more than once due to my lack of timing and having remembered where I got shot in the back from. Fortunately? Turning around and unloading a bunch of lead in the enemies was not a problem after that. Newcomers; learn to utilize this as it will be something rather helpful for your first time through.

When the multiplayer there is multiplayer, however, as noted before – the multiplayer from my experience tends to work or not work due to sometimes latency, which isn’t surprising in many ways as sometimes the connections for the peer-to-peer playstyle don’t always work the best, but the multiplayer is still functional and still allows for a Duke Nukem fragfest. that is filled with the antics that many will remember. Thanks to PlayStation Plus I was able to experience the game for free on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita while having purchased it on PC out of the sheer want to relive my childhood. Hopefully we can see more games get this well done of a port in the future. This is definitely one to place in the digital collection with a smile on your face due to how well done it was and how well the original game was kept intact while new features were implemented such as the touch screen access and the death rewind to a safe place within your campaign.

Games, games, and more games – this was easily the theme of 2014 as the end of the year was bombarded with some mind-blowers, some not-so mind-blowing games, and even some sleeper hits. These are all games that were carefully taken into consideration when digging through and deciding as a team whether or not we should add remakes into our top ten of 2014. Well did we? As much as we would have loved to done so with games such as Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX and even Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD having launched, we decided to leave these out. If you are wondering why, it’s simply for the fact these remakes are just that, remakes that have been updated and even having had some bonus content added to give a more modernized feel. So what did we choose as our top ten of 2014? Take a peek at our list below.

10) Wolfenstein: The New Order

Ten or so years ago, this game would not have been possible due to the lack of graphical capabilities that consoles were limited by, but thanks to PC’s, New-Gen Consoles, and a few advancements by the gaming industry; it happened. This game takes the cake when it comes to graphical advancements by the id Tech engine Bethesda has been implementing to a lot of these new First Person Shooters. Even the story takes quite an interesting turn that will pull players into their seats and along for the ride.

9) Hyrule Warriors

This game is one of those that is extremely addictive thanks to the team up between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo bringing one of their most beloved franchises and letting it adopt a Dynasty Warriors element to it. This is where the game finds success even through its riveting storyline that pits players in adventures as Link as he scours through Hyrule in order to help save Princess Zelda from an ultimately evil force that seeks nothing except to end the world in chaos. Not being able to tell what is real, what is fake, and what is absolutely going to make you soil yourself is what drives this game at its core. With limited ammo, healing supplies, and even resources; players will find themselves pushing as much as they can to escape the events that are folding in front of them while trying to find the source of the darkness that is hunting down Sebastian as he frantically fights for survival.

Major Earth populations have been all-but-wiped from existence. With resources, population, and even territories constantly at war; players will find themselves in a rather peculiar place. This place? Your Panopticon, which also acts as your prison, base of operations, and ultimately the place your character will sponsor. After the blundering mess we lived through known as Alien: Colonial Marines, there was no surprise that Sega would once more take a shot at the franchise that became well known thanks to the movies by Ridley Scott and soon became a cult classic and modern fan crazed franchise. With Ellen Ripley’s daughter seeking answers, she is finding herself in a constant struggle where guns, flashlights, and even homemade items are her best chances of survival as the games Xenomorph hunts players down while it learns based upon how they place. With Bioware being masters of storytelling and even gameplay mechanics, there is no surprise with the fact that Dragon Age: Inquisition has earned itself as one of our top games of this year. With it being number one, players can only take a bit of advice as we suggest taking an adventure once more with an entire new team that takes place shortly after the events of what happened within Kirkwall. This time, players will be overjoyed to experience the infamous Qunari race while also taking on a new enemy or going online for the first time in the series in order to take on side-missions.
