Fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic have a lot to look forward to as Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games are teaming up to bring the critically-acclaimed series back to life on modern consoles.
It’s hard to imagine that it’s been nearly twenty years since the long-running and award-winning series first came to consoles on the original Xbox console and on PC. Now, here we are, twenty years later with Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Entertainment teaming up to remake Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
The official announcement came with a teaser trailer during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase 2021, which included the iconic imagery of the fan-favorite sith lord, Darth Revan, with the voice-over talent of Jennifer Hale, the actress behind the voice of Bastila Shan in the original release.
It has already been confirmed that this all-new remake is being led by a newly created team of industry veterans at developer Aspyr who will be working closely with Lucasfilm Games. Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games have confirmed that Sony will be publishing the PlayStation 5 version of the game when it launches.
“We’ve spent the past several years assembling the very best talent from across the industry to deliver a modern vision of this timeless Star Wars legend,” said Aspyr co-founder Ted Staloch. “As lifelong Star Wars fans with extensive experience working with many of its best games, we have the deepest love and admiration for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and cannot wait to share this amazing remake with the rest of the galaxy.”
The remake aims to bring the series to life with all-new gameplay elements, cutting-edge graphics, and what seems to be returning voice-over cast members to help continue bringing the series to life. The original release itself, as stated by Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, ”stands out among the Legends of Star Wars storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be joining with Aspyr and Sony to remake this Legend for a new generation of players,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “Our teams have been working closely and share a deep commitment to honoring what fans love about the original, while bringing new fans on this incredible journey.”
The original release first shipped in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still stands out as one of the strongest titles in the history of RPG titles, laying the way for franchises such as Star Wars: The Fallen Order and BioWare’s, Mass Effect franchise to take inspirations, but also, follow in its steps after its release.
“Nearly 20 years after its debut, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains one of the most highly requested remakes from the PlayStation community,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Head of Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The time is finally right to bring this dream to life for both diehard fans and those who have yet to experience it.”
From how it seems, we can only suspect that this remake could be one of the best things to date, but also, something that will keep fans rather optimistically cautious due to how beloved the original two releases were, and because of just how unique they were at their time of release.
