Behind the team are Peter Hu, a former senior member of the Diablo 2 team at Blizzard was joined by Paxton, a Google X team member, have joined forces once again. The two were formerly known for collaborating with each other when they worked together through Flagship Studios and Gazillion Entertainment. Both studios are known for their works on Diablo style games such as Hellgate: London and Marvel Heroes Omega.

Their upcoming title Mythgard will see players adventure into a vast world where ancient beings, such as creatures of myth, and mortals battle for dominance and control of the world using magic and technology to their advantage. The game has been inspired by urban paranormal stories that you see in common day media such as books, film, television and other formats. Their game’s lore will use these stories to weave their world together throughout the single-player campaign as well as their online multiplayer format.

In a statement, Peter Hu explains their thoughts on the CCG market, “with all the digital CCGs by big-name companies coming out recently, you might wonder why we’re making another one. But in truth, the genre is still relatively new, and there’s a lot of game design space yet to be exploredWe believe that Mythgard’s innovations on the form will stand out in people’s minds for a long time to come. Personally, of all the titles I’ve worked on, this is the one that I’ve enjoyed the most – and I sincerely hope that shines through when you sit down to play it.

With only a handful of CCG’s out there, now is the perfect time for games like Mythgard to make its mark. Rhino Games has revealed Mythgard will be entering a closed beta period that is set to go live starting January 2019. Their closed beta will begin across all the previously mentioned platforms and will feature the following modes:

  • The single-player story campaign
  • 1v1 and 2v2 multiplayer
  • Ranked and casual PvP modes
  • Unique resource and combat systems
