Since the launch of Metal Gear Survive, fans have been heavily scrutinizing Konami’s newly released title, a spin-off from the core series itself. Having launched on Feb. 20, 2018, in the US and earlier today in the UK and Europe. But there’s one thing about this game that has absolutely begun to anger fans of the Metal Gear franchise: an unnecessary microtransaction that should not exist.
The moment you load into Metal Gear Survive, players are prompted to create an avatar that they will play, this avatar is used throughout both the single-player campaign and its online component. However, if you decide to have a second romp with the game you have two painful options made available to you: One is to delete your character, losing all the progress you have made and two, you’ll have to shell out $9.99 USD or £7.99 on your platform of choice in order to purchase Konami’s real-money currency for the game called “Survival Coins,” a microtransaction currency within the game.
While you certainly can modify your character while at the Base Camp area of Metal Gear Survive, you can’t change your gender what-so-ever, but you can completely modify your character in whatever way you please. But if you decided that you want to start completely over? You have those two painful options, options that should not be present in any manner. If you want a total of two more characters, each for a different playthrough of the game, you’re going to be throwing down a total of $20 USD just to unlock both avatar slots.

At the time of writing this piece, players will have to purchase 1150 SV (Survival) Coins on their respected shops for $9.99 USD in order to open their character slots:
- 100 SV coins – $0.99
- 550 SV coins – $4.99
- 1150 SV coins – $9.99
- 3500 SV coins – $29.99
- 6000 SV coins – $49.99
Unfortunately for Konami, the forum ResetEra is already in an uproar over this form of content locking. Even with this form of backlash, Konami hasn’t opened up about their stance on their approach to “DLC” content to access a save file that’s already on your hard drive. If you’re planning to get your hands on Metal Gear Survive, you may want to consider your approach to the game and how much you are willing to spend for a full-blown experience.
