Demon Gaze is a dungeon crawling based experience that puts players in the role as Oz, a young man turned demon gazer thanks to the magical powers within his eye, that allow him to seal demons away for all eternity. Taking place a thousand years after the events of Students of the Round, players will be familiar with world they enter. In the game, players will spend time fighting their way through carefully and uniquely crafted dungeons, but they will also spend a balanced time in the inn, where they will build relationships with NPC’s or spend their currency in game on items, and equipment.

Players will also be able to create secondary characters, which they will be able to party with, while also changing their appearances while having them “take a bath”. The demons encountered and partnered with are apart of a “machine”, and in this means, some of them can transform when they go into a rampage mode. After defeating them? Some fans of the Persona series will recognize the being able to summon them mechanic.

In Demon Gaze: Oz awakens to find himself in Misred – a cursed land at the world’s western frontier-with a dark shroud covering certain memories of his past. The land before him contains many labyrinths that hold both treasure and danger in equal volumes. Without knowing where else to go or what else to do, Oz decides to take up arms in order to hunt down artifacts and eke out a living in this world that feels so new to him. One day, he will have to face his past, but until then, he has no choice but to trust those around him, and in his new-found abilities as a “Demon Gazer”.

Pros:

  • Graphic are next-gen quality
  • Tons of replay-ability
  • Very competitive
  • A good challenge
  • Friends list ghost rider system

Cons

  •  Only local multiplayer is available currently
  •  High chance of Rage quit
  •  Repetitive if not at relative skill level to the tracks difficulty

Trials Fusion is the first Trials game I’ve played, I had no Idea what to expect. When I started the game I was greeted with a techno like theme song that gets old very fast, but a quick jump to settings solved that issue. After getting started on the career mode you start with a event called Greenhorn’s Grove. You start with a training program that eases you into the games simple yet difficult to master game mechanics. After completing this short warm up, it’s time for the first track TurbinehaveTerror. It’s a simple track with the task of testing what you just learned in the training program, now if you ace it you either have a great grasp on the beginner mechanics, you’ve played the past Fusion game, or maybe luck?

After getting a taste of what the game is, I couldn’t stop trying to ace every track after the Greenhorn’s Grove, and the tracks gradually get tougher after each track progression. It wasn’t until the Urban Sprawl event did I get a little change from the usual trial racing. FMX is the freestyle part of Fusions Trials and the system is also a very simple one tricks are performed using the right analog stick, but not easy to master. There isn’t a ton of FMX tracks but they are peppered through the game seemingly strategicly to give the player a break from the usual Trial mode and Trial mode can make you want to take a quick pause from the game to relieve the pent up frustration sometimes, so to me it’s a welcome break.

Aside from the Trials, FMX freestyle, and the occasional skill game which are interesting to say the least is the Garage. Here is where you can see your available dirt bikes and one atv (I still have one vehicle locked, it may be an atv or dirt bike.) which you are able to customize with different colors, rim styles, and body kits. The colors are free, but new rims and body kit need to be unlocked via meeting certain goals and then bought, same with the rider’s gear which I will get to soon. Mind you the money is earned through the tracks depending on the medal you get. After you’re done customizing your ride you are able to change your riders gear, through the same way you unlock the rims and body kits and they will need to be bought too. There are no upgrades to the engine, suspension, and etc. unfortunately.

As of now multiplayer is only local, but while waiting the true multiplayer to go live try the Step into the Light mode which requires a Uplay account. Step into the Light mode is to unlock a special rider suit, it makes you look like Evel Knievel. If you want the suit you’ll also need Trials Frontier, as the tracks In Step into the Light are in both games and you’ll need to gold medal all three tracks on both games, then you’ll have your snazzy suit.

Note: After world wide multiplayer is released, I will update the review to include my take on the “true” multiplayer

Watch_Dogs Digital Novel Announced by Ubisoft

Watch_Dogs™ by Ubisoft gets eBOOK //n/DARK CLOUDS

As we get closer and closer to the launch of Watch_Dogs, it is inevitable we will hear more about special items, and even electronic published goods. This one should be one of those that is on any Watch_Dogs fan purchase list. Why? John Shirley, the writer, has decided to continue Watch_Dogs with a storyline that picks up where the game has left off. The ebook is a first time thing for the well known and talented publisher/developer group at Ubisoft, and has been slated to be a digital only launch.

If you aren’t familiar with the talented John Shirley, he is a well known author with over 30 books and short stories that have been published. One of his most well known is his series called “Eclipse”, which is an amazing set of Cyber Punk books. In these books, a theoretical future has occurred where Soviet Russia did not fall. He once more returns to the cyber punk-esque world with his Watch_Dogs ebook. Featuring new and previously known characters, we can only presume this book will be a heck of a read.

“Working on Watch Dogs was enormously interesting to me because its world offers the convergence of cyberpunk and the edgy tech reality of our times; it all plays out with action and energy against the inner city backdrop that I thrive in” said John Shirley. “With hack tech in one hand and gun in the other, Aiden Pearce is a believable fusion of hacker and action hero who deliberately slips between the cracks of society to relentlessly pursue his agenda. The novel introduces Mick Wolfe, an ex-military, who get caught in a dangerous game in Chicago’s hyper connected and violent underground. Working with Thomas Geffroyd and Kevin Shortt at Ubisoft to develop the book was a rocking experience – Ubisoft is right out there on the frontier of videogame development. I couldn’t ask for more inspiration”.

Ubisoft Official Release Statement:

Watch_Dogs //n/Dark Clouds will be available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish at the game’s release on May 27, 2014. It will be available in two digital formats: an upgraded e-book version with interactive elements including videos and image and a classic e-book. For more information, click herewww.watchdogs.com/ebook.

Our Take by Dustin Murphy:

As a fan of beat-em-up looter titles, I’m actually a huge fan of these kind of games. From titles such as Sacred, Dark Avenger, and many others, this game surely will join the chain of those that have fully grabbed my interest. However, with games like this, players should always note that instead of just buying characters, there’s always a chance to play them, and see if they are up to their play style. With the game being in open beta, we can only hope at some point to see it on consoles.

As a fan of Trial’s games, and this being only the second one, I can truly say I’ve been enjoying myself quite a bit with it. Having been able to once more revisit the ideology of side-scrolling, motor cycle bouncing, trick-maneuvering, platforming tracks, has provided quite a bit of fun. We can only say, this is definitely a game worth obtaining, and it is quite fun none-the-less. We highly suggest picking this up. It’ll keep you quite busy.

Review: Ragnarok Odyssey ACE – Re-Imagining the Original

Ragnarok Odyssey ACE – Re-Imagining the Original
Originally Published and Copyrighted by Blast Away the Game Review on 4/13/2014
Review by Dustin Murphy

Pros:

  • Beautifully imagined graphics
  • New ACE Abilities
  • New Mercenary Book, which rewards players for completion
  • New Missions and Terrain that allow for a breathtaking adventure
  • Character Import allows for save data to transfer, but not save completion
  • Previously DLC will port over at some point
  • Game tweaks provide a better experience for the feint of heart

Cons:

  • Screen clutter on PS Vita seems to get cluttered at some point
  • UI Control for positioning and or party list would be well suited
  • Button placement to the d-pad for target hard-lock can at times be annoying on Vita versus PS3
  • Yggdrasil Tower can unfortunately be rather repetitive and requires main story completion

Final Verdict: 7 out of 10

Final Thoughts: As much as I loved the original Ragnarok Odyssey for the Vita when it first released, I found this game to be an instant grab soon as it hit the streets, much like the original. Unfortunately what I bought was a re-imagining of what the original should have been. With expanded content, bug fixes, and a vast amount of game balancing as well as tweaks, Ragnarok Odyssey ACE does deliver a unique experience that can’t be found in the original version. Unfortunately aside from being a beat-em-up fest, the problem with this title is the lack of story. It is fun to take on missions with friends and new acquaintances, but once that wears out, the fun is over. This is one title that is either for the die-hard fan or the new-comer looking for a game.

When Ragnarok Odyssey launched back in 2012 on the PlayStation Vita, it caused a bit of a stir in the Ragnarok fan-base causing many fans to turn their heads, head to the nearest game store and of course pick it up. Fast forwarding a few years, we are greeted with a version of the game that has decidedly learned a lesson from the previous experience, which was riddled with difficulty scaling, but also game-breaking bugs for the online community. Fortunately, we are now seeing a polished, up-scaled, and bug-free version of the game. With smooth frame rate on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita, Ragnarok Odyssey once more allows us to grab our overly muscled men or scantily clad women, and head out with our majorly over-sized weapons to save the world around our characters.

Ragnarok Odyssey ACE is what some would imagine as the directors cut. With new content from new scenery, weapons, ACE Skills, Mercenary Book, Billionaires Pot, and of course the monstrosity of Yggdrasil Tower, which leads players up to a 400 floor expansion of the original title. When moving this title from the console to the handheld, I was surprised at my ability go online and play very easily with PlayStation 3 users, while finding little to no latency or disconnects. This was something that truly had changed the online experience I had obtained when first encountering the original release. With all the updates on hand, system changes, and of course updated gameplay features system wise (behind the scenes) I noticed increased framerate, no input latency or even the slightest hint of delayed response. This is something that many returning players will be able to take notice of. In Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, another feature players will cherish is the new Billionaires Pot. This little feature is something quite interesting and that’s because of how helpful it is to obtain rather rare items. With it players can obtain weapon expertise tickets, which allows them to create higher grade weapons, and of course upgrade said higher grade weapons. This of course can lighten the difficulty, but also make farming for materials all that much easier. With cards, which add abilities, players can trade them in and get various types of potions, some of them can alter immunities and decrease damage taken by certain elements. While other potions from it can cure poison and of course other various ailments as well. The one that I’ve grown to personally take a liking to as a completionist is the new Mercenary Book.

The Mercenary Book is a completionists’ favorite thing ever for this game. In the book players will find goals to complete, be it have a certain amount of wardrobe items, a certain amount of weapons, various weapon types, slain monsters, or even regions visited among many other things to do. This is where the game can become a real challenge as players will seek to fulfill this book by running every option possible. This includes buying armor, weapons, ACE abilities, ability cards, and of course potions. Oh and lets not forget the boutique. Yes you even get rewarded for buying haircuts, face changes, and even color changes on top of each of them. Sound fun? Well it should if it doesn’t, these rewards are unique, and many of them will help when it comes to taking on the Yggdrasil Tower.

ACE abilities are something I found unique to the game, something that actually became a bit of a game changer for me to be quite honest. These ACE Abilities allow for players to take on new combat systems, think of them as ultimate abilities, but with a rather quick cool down. They allow for new crowd executing attacks versus the old repetitive combo system, which still seemingly needs revamped. For example, for the Hammersmith, players will find themselves turning into a spinning hurricane of disaster for the enemies or a sky jumping, hammer dropping, meteor of… Well doom at least for some enemies.

Outside of these new changes the game remains very much the same. This however, in some ways, is unfortunate. Having hoped for a bit more story depth versus brawling, the game still does bring some enjoyment. This is something that can easily be obtained by joining friends who are online via PlayStation Vita or the PlayStation 3 console. This can be done via ad-hoc and or infrastructure (online), which gives the game quite a bit of replay value: especially if that person is new to the game and is finding themselves having some trouble.

Unfortunately my biggest complaint had to be with the PlayStation Vita. With the ACE abilities, players will find their screens cluttered between them and of course potions, health bar, and party list. This overall becomes a clutter, which at times, can make the game rather annoying to play. A change that would have been nice to see and or would be nice to see a UI editing capability, so that as players become accustomed to the game, they can change the UI (User Interface) to a specification of their own versus the default. Luckily though, much of the game remains unchanged, and thanks to the Yggdrasil Tower, players can enjoy 400 levels of monster slaying, item farming, and item upgrading. We just hope many of the players find these subtle changes worthwhile and enjoyable.

Graphics: Much like the predecessor, much of the game remains unchanged, which is a rather nice change. With beautiful color schemes that give the game a rather lively look, many players can say the game itself looks much like the anime it runs along side with. For a handheld and PS3 title, Ragnarok Odyssey is a beautiful game, with quite a bit of customization.

Sound: Unchanged, many players will be able to enjoy the soundtrack, sound effects, and even the ambiance in a beautiful set up on the PlayStation 3 as well as the PlayStation Vita. Much of this of course having remained, unchanged.

Controls: With the transition between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the controls remained rather unaltered, which for many games that go between the two, this games controls remains very easy to learn, with minimal tutorials needed. However, combos for new players can be a bit of a hassle to figure out, but with time, they are easy, useful, and fun to use. From personal experience, the PS Vita was the console where the game was found to be the most enjoyable.

Special Thanks:

I want to thank the multiple PlayStation 3 Users that allowed me to join their games in order to test the online connectivity between the PlaySation Vita and PlayStation 3 versions. I also want to thank the friend (wished to remain anonymous) that allowed me to use his PlayStation 3 version in order to do this review.

Release Date: Available now at most major retailers and digitally through the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Opinion Article: The Ugly Side of Gaming

Opinion: The Ugly Side of Gaming

Originally Published and Copyrighted by Blast Away the Game Review on 4/11/2014

Written by Dustin Murphy

Gaming is something that is supposed to be enjoyable, a leisure of sorts so that we can escape from stress, annoyance, and or just to relax after a long day doing the activities that has filled the day. Though sometimes, just sometimes gaming is not the funnest thing. Gaming we would have once thought was a community where we all got a long, where each individual would help the other out, and that was a thought long cherished till recent days.

What this article is about is everything that gaming shouldn’t be, things that have appeared, and things that should just not exist in it. After a few days of finally debating this article and how to write it, the words finally have come forth. It started by simply sitting on the Google+ forums, reading forums, and even seeing flame wars break out based on who has the better console, the false statistics, and even clear down to racism. It is true that society is very diverse, very different for each individual, and that presents conflicts of all sorts, but is it really worth a sub-culture war within itself?

After speaking with several fellow gamer’s, journalists, and just enthusiasts, it was interesting to see their take and reactions to the posts I had bookmarked, forum pages that were there, and of course the reactions of other people. Does gaming spark hatred? One of them had stated from what he saw, experienced, and even has gone through, gaming itself is a subculture of society, it is a culture that like any – is very alive. Our anonymous response also had stated he was not surprised by XBox gamers, PlayStation gamers, or even PC gamers flaming each other, and purely hating each other based on a console of their choice. It is something he himself has experienced since his day one purchase of an XBox One and of course a PlayStation 4, which lead to the question, why? His response was simple, “it’s because of the games. Not who has the better graphics, the better controllers, but based on what I am wanting to play. They just don’t seem to take care of this or see past a stupid blind hate. I’ve experienced this before when mentioning in a Battlefield 4 lobby on XBox One that I needed to go, a few friends wanted to play Blacklight Retribution on PS4. What came out of their mouths was quite disturbing. I was called everything from homo to traitor and words quite a bit more vulgar. Unfortunately, it doesn’t surprise me if gaming could spark violence. If it can cause hate, why not physical actions based on such?”

Our conversation went on much longer where I got to understand the stories he went through, ones which seemed much like a few encounters of my own. After talking to a few other people, the responses came around the same, and what was a bit more frustrating was the sexism that the few female gamers I did speak with have encountered. One of these women let me quote her with the following statement:

“It’s not easy being a female gamer. I get told to show them my chest, send nude pics, or even prove that I’m a gamer by listing some of the most famous franchises out there. It’s not hard to use the stereotyped answer that I grew up playing my dad’s NES with a copy of Duck Hunt or even the Super Mario Bros., which came in a dual cartridge. The worst part of it all is how guys will hound you for being female. If you stop talking? They start messaging, if you tell them you have a boyfriend, they will make fun of you and instantly the flaming starts. They think the female gaming community is something hyper sexually charged because of games, movies, and even cosplayers. It makes it hard for me to even plug my headset in during a session of World of Warcraft, League of Legends, or when I play a single session of Call of Duty with my boyfriend. The frustration it causes shouldn’t be surprising though. It’s something that happens quite often anymore. I’ve just learned to ignore it and tell them I’m a little kid. Then the squeaker flaming starts. In a lot of ways, I can’t say I’m proud to be a gamer, not if I have to be put into a category with a hardcore set of people who are rather close minded. I’ve stopped most of my gaming lately because of this.”

Her statement, which I’ve seen and experienced while playing with her, remains quite true. Unfortunately, the community has become a bit hateful and even brash due to the invisible internet wall, which allows people to become who they are not. With the industry heading the way it has, the internet has grown and allowed people to create a sense of security that was never present before. This also leads to a new form of moderation that companies like Activison-Blizzard, Microsoft, Sony, and even a few other major companies have begun to take measures in. Allowing for in-game moderators, report systems, and of course ignore systems. However, the question comes down to the ideology of – how well does it work? For many of us that have used the ignore, mute, and or report system, the results can be promising. With companies such as Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft, and Sony having implemented report systems, they are able to check the game logs, voice chat, and even actions that have lead to such an event. This sometimes can turn into an account ban, game ban, or even a “cool down period,” unfortunately it doesn’t always work. Gamer’s will create new accounts and once more proceed to their bullying.

However, does this correlate to the effects of video games and violence or frustration caused by a gamer that leads to violence? I’m not going to say they can’t, I’m not a doctor, but what I can say is perhaps the community can. With a community that can be cold and calculating, at times it can only lead us to wonder; when will enough become enough and gamers become gamers? This is a question no one can ask. The thing that we must remember is that where a gamer is, a gamer should be, and no matter the platform, we are all the same. We experience our games based on preference. Be it mouse and keyboard, joysticks, and or voice commands. Perhaps a touch pad. The reality of it is, no matter what platform you are on. In the long run, we all experience the same story, same gameplay, even if the graphics are slightly better or worse.
