Deus Ex’s Augments May be Here Sooner than You Think

dxmd_leg_augmentation

Imagine a world not far from our own where losing an eye, a leg, a hand, your arm, heart, or even a lung was replaceable. Imagine a world where you weren’t limited to the defects of humanity with being born with a limb that wouldn’t work or a part of your leg that has been overly damaged. Imagine a world where the impossible is now possible. Welcome to Deus Ex, a franchise that has taken the idea of humanities limitations and moved past with factual science that has begun making itself reality. It’s become a world of endless possibilities in a franchise that has made us wonder where human augmentations would go with artificial limbs, eyes, enhanced ears, and the likes. That world is a place where once career-ending limitations became a thing of the past and allowed for humans to regain control of what once seemed over.

A few years ago, I began to watch and study the world of prosthetic limbs and human enhancement. Not because I or anyone I know are disabled in such means, but because the science behind it made me curious. It made me curious to what would happen if we began to break the boundaries between man and machine only to merge into a world where humans would transcend being handicapped or disabled. After playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I began to question the possibilities of a future that could truly become reality, and to my amazement? That future isn’t far off.

When I talk biomedical implants or even something similar, you probably are thinking things such as artificial teeth, metal rods in legs, arms or back, but what if I’m talking mechanically engineered?

The Blind Can See Again

As someone who has always had eyesight problems. I found myself often questioning, “What would happen if I went blind?”; the answer? Now it seems not to far away thanks to scientific advances in human implants as well as artificial eyes. Back in July of 2015, I stumbled upon a BBC article written by medical correspondent Fergus Walsh that discussed retinal implants that allow 80 year old Ray Flynn to see again. Ray Flynn suffers from a disorder called Dry AMD, or age related macular degeneration. A disorder that affects at least half a million people a year just in the U.S. alone. Close to the same in the United Kingdom it comes out. The minds behind this device? A team known as Second Sight with their device known as The Argus II Bionic Eye Implant.

Ray_Flynn.jpg

This implant has allowed Mr. Flynn to once more begin seeing the things he love’s such as futbol, the television set, and even his computer screen again. Let alone can he see those, Mr. Flynn is also capable of making out his family again.

argus2_press_photo.jpg

So how exactly does this augmented implant work? The bionic eye implant is first put into the eye, where a surgical procedure is done. It is then hooked up to the small electrodes around the retinal, which allows the cells to carry the visual information to the brain. From there the brain is able to process the electrical impulses while the device transmits the data being sent to the brain to his eyes from the glasses camera.

argus-ii.jpg

Doing this allows for the retina’s remaining cells to function to the best of their ability. This can be imagined as almost like seeing a computer screen’s vertical and horizontal as well as diagonal lines. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean at this time that eyes will fully be replaced by bionics, but gives us the idea that there’s a lot more in the works, and may just give us a fighting chance against pure blindness. Now we just play the waiting games for augments like Adam Jensen’s where we can have glasses or visual receptors near our face without needing glasses or sunglasses at all times.

Prosthetic Limbs That Work Like Real Limbs

For many of us, the thought of losing an arm, a leg, a finger, a part of our foot, all of it is terrifying, and for some? It’s a reality. After sitting down on YouTube the same night I read about Mr. Flynn, my mind began to wonder about realistic prosthesis and what the future could hold. For example, what if I was injured in a crash, how would I write, how would I play games, how would I hold a child if I had one? To YouTube I went and stumbled upon various advances in prosthesis. There I stumbled upon a video that had my interest. Here I watched a man by the name of Hugh Herr – if you don’t know about this man, he’s MIT Media Lab’s Biomechatronics head honcho. Meaning? He’s the badass behind the prosthetic limbs.

Hugh Herr, for a bit of background, is a double amputee. He lost both of his legs in a climbing accident that left him bed bound for years. In his speech it was hard not to find myself interested as he began to discuss the teams advancement in limb replacement. Granted the limbs come off at the end of the day, these limbs allow him to walk as you and I do, get around as you and I do, and even do the things he loves such as running, walking, climbing, and even jogging.

This is thanks to the 48 year old doctor’s want for new and impossible prosthetics to replace the old conventional ones that come with hindering limitations. On his designs, Dr. Herr has designed a beyond complex board system that allows for a onboard system to work with microprocessors, environmental sensors, control loops. springs, struts, and muscle as well as tendon like motors. What does this mean? Almost realistic body parts, but in a prosthetic. His prosthetic title? BiOMs. That means these legs will automatically adjust reflexively as they move with the patients strides, the slopes in their terrain, but they also recycle energy as if they were our own flesh, blood and bone.

Thanks to his advancements in this technology, we can only wonder when his team of scientists will replace legs, arms, and even other body parts with functional augmented parts that don’t have to be removed, and will forever seem as if they were the real limb they replaced. You can watch his Ted Talk fascinating as well as captivating speech here.

BioChips

As one could imagine, it’s not hard to see a world where things such as BioChips exist (External Link to Fox News), because they already do. These chips allow for people to hold their personal information on a single RFID, allowing them to unlock their houses, send faxes, unlock cars, pay with the swipe of their hand, and be on with their lives. These chips also have personal information such as GPS location and the likes on them so that they can also find missing children, Alzheimers patients, and even identify a missing persons.

While those certainly do have their possible uses, what about more daily uses such as opening your house with the swipe of a hand, loading your grocery list to the chip via NFC from your computer so it could be loaded to your phone or a AR set of glasses? What about paying your bills by simply swiping your hand over an app or going to an ATM and simply moving your hand with the chip over the device that will activate it? While it all seems scary, this future is already happening in many places and has become useful for those using those devices. Several have already shown that their lives have become easier, more stress free since having been chipped. While privacy concerns are still there, it seems the route is quote possible and even useful for those intending on using the technology.

The Deus Ex Future Isn’t Far

While many of us have seen the trailers, the shorts, and even the effects of what can happen through augmentation. It’s hard not to imagine a world where we aren’t quite human anymore, but have surpassed many limitations through the use of technology. While the idea of having a chip inside my hand isn’t ideal, it’s an idea that may not be too far off with the way cellphones, necklaces, wristbands, and the likes are now becoming wearable technology.

dxmd-still-2

While the future for true merger between man and machine is far from being perfected, it’s interesting to see where it will go, when it will become to fruition in an easily accessible and when we will fully be able to utilize some of the technologies seen within the franchise. While I don’t expect to see people smashing through walls with artificial limbs, I do hope to see people returning to normal and functioning lives through technology.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is set to launch on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One August 23rd, 2016.

Opinion: Call of Duty Infinite Warfare Sales Will be Great, but Not Because of Infinite Warfare

Infinite Warfare

When publishing a new game on an annual release schedule, it’s not hard for development teams to try for the next big thing, and Call of Duty is one that certainly attempts to do that. It’s not uncommon to see the series follow the trends on new things such as exo-suits, which exist, and even modern combat tactics. However, what was far-fetched? Is exo-suit abilities like what Advanced Warfare had. While Advanced Warfare’s campaign was enjoyable, multiplayer was abysmal, it was convoluted on what it wanted to be, and even seemed to question itself with the addition of the zombies campaign it received. Hell, even the campaign had suffered by making players the camera man to the legendary actor, Kevin Spacey.

Recently, Infinite Warfare seems to be following in its steps after the recent announcement on social media. Its announcement was received with heavy sighs of distress as players once more found the series was going from the direction they wanted, which was a sequel to the well-ended Modern Warfare 3, which left players with a cliff hanger as to what Captain Price would do next. Instead, we’re seeing a new frontier open as players prepare to head into the futuristic world that seems almost derived from the likes of titles like Halo meets Robocop meets Advanced Warfare. While the idea would be sound, it’s not what Call of Duty needed, nor was it a leap that it needed. This shows in the picture below on what fans of the franchise through the official Call of Duty YouTube Channel.

Infinite_Warfare_Dislikes.pngAs you can see from a direct screen capture, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare has not been happily met by fans, with almost 2.4 million dislikes and almost breaking 385,000 dislikes, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is not the blockbuster it seems it will be. Even with the dislikes, Infinite Warfare will still succeed, but not because of the title itself, but the game coming packaged titled Cal of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered. To get it, fans will have to purchase the Infinite Warfare with MSRP versions at $79.99 USD and $129.99 USD. The issue? It’s evident that fans aren’t after Infinite Warfare. Unfortunately? It doesn’t seem Activision has plans to release the title separately at this time.

It’s a Perfect Marketing Ploy

Modern_Warfare.png

If you’re like me, you already pre-ordered only to see this on your actual screen.

While it’s not uncommon knowledge among the fans, Call of Duty has been in a steady decline since its rocky performance with both Call of Duty Ghosts and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare only to see those numbers go up with sales of Call of Duty Black Ops III, which is rumoured to have outperformed the later two titles by a landslide. While Black Ops is one of the most beloved trilogies to-date till the next one comes out, if there is a next one, which may seem likely if Infinite Warfare’s sales for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare don’t show a higher play count than Infinite Warfare itself.

While it’s odd to see Activision pull a marketing stunt like this, it isn’t the first time they’ve had questionable practices, even when it came to releases regarding their sales totals for Advanced Warfare and Ghosts (You can see the Forbes article here: Activision Smokescreens ‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ Sales, Continuing A Trend). The issue? These numbers for Infinite Warfare will pad the titles sales and allow Activision to please their investors since Call of Duty’s steady decline could once more get worse without the bolstered sales of Modern Warfare 4 combo packs. Unfortunately, it’s a perfect marketing ploy that’ll bring in more game sales than intended than before. While this may seem good for investors, it’s unfortunate bad news for fans who just wanted Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is set to release on November 4th, 2016. Stay tuned for our review.

Reboots and Remakes Are in Fashion, So Here’s a Few That Need the Treatment

So in the past few months, even years, we’ve been getting a lot of remakes and reboots, even “HD” ports. We’ve been seeing games like Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Dishonored, Ratchet & Clank, and now we’re even seeing titles like God Eater getting the treatment. So what happens when this can of worms gets opened? We get some games we’d like to see on this chart, so here’s a list of games that’d make great upgrades to be on par with their sister titles. So take a look at our top ten “Definitive Edition” game bundles we’d like to see get remastered.

10: Dead Space Trilogy

DeadSpace_2_-_Dementia

So we all know you can’t hear anything in space except for the dramatic vacuuming of air, explosions, and yourself screaming inside of your own space helmet. For Isaac Clark, that’s not a choice he gets to have, and fortunately his space horror for him is our viewing pleasure. Known for its dislodging enemy parts strategically in order to kill them as well as the nuisance of limited ammo supplies, players dove in for a horror treat that left us clawing at EA’s doorsteps for more. Unfortunately the series seems dead in the water, but if fans get what they want, it’s pretty damn likely this is one of those top trilogies they’ll want to sustain their need for a good horror survival series that pushed the limits on gore effects.

9: Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2

battlefield_Bad_Company_SC01

If you ever wondered what it’d be like to be part of the misfits in the United States Military, Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2 took us for that joy ride across scenes of delight as we managed to piss off the Russian’s as we could in comedic style. While the series was at times downright hard to take seriously, the game offered the amount of military and comical mischief we needed. Plus it had Haggard who was an explosives maniac that would do anything to see some explosives go off. If he wasn’t there, it’s pretty set in stone this series would’ve flopped, but thanks to its innovation in multiplayer mechanics and mischief in its story? Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2 only got better with a Golf Course warzone to enjoy. Now if only we could see it modernized with Battlefield 2142.

8: Resistance Trilogy

Resistance_FoM_SC01

While Resistance saw itself with a few reboots that did utterly horrible, Resistance itself offered a unique blend of science fiction blended in with World War 2, which allowed for a unique twist of things as “$hit hit the fan”. For fans this included bigger, meaner aliens, bigger as well as meaner weapons, and a massive online multiplayer arena title that sent fans screeching across alleyways and through corridors in order to secure their kill. Unfortunately the series saw a drop off due to poor sales of Resistance 3 and Resistance Burning Skies. While both games were troubled, their multiplayer halves were a blast, and they kept true to what the original two did. Now if only Sony would hire Insomniac to remaster it or even reboot the series. If only.

7: Mass Effect Trilogy

mass-effect-characters-pane

While BioWare is very well known for Dragon Age and even Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, their Trilogy titled “Mass Effect” has been one of the most revered franchises in gaming history due to its character development, storytelling elements, character creation tools, and even its approach to open-world exploration. As the series proceeded the love it has by the fans has continued to rapidly grow and seems it’ll keep doing so over the years. With Mass Effect Andromeda slated for 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, we can oly hope that BioWare will let us revisit the Shepard Trilogy in the near future.

6: Jade Empire

Jade-Empire-Shot-04.jpg

Years upon years ago when the Xbox Classic Console released, we were given a glimpse at the genius behind the minds at BioWare. In turn they gave us a tail that took us through a mystical land in China, here we mastered ghosts, evil pirates, and a wonderous tale that took us through mythical lands in order to overcome odds against evil. Because of this title many fans grew to love the mystical appeal that it carried with it and continue to discuss it to this day. The game has seen multiple free-to-buy releases that bring fans from all over the world in and even causes a few to boot up their Xbox 360’s or even Xbox Classic’s to play the title. If Microsoft and BioWare gave it a re-release with updated graphics and all previously released content? The game would surely take over as a “Martial Art masterpiece”.

5: Call of Duty Modern Warfare Trilogy

CoD_MW_SC01

Before the series had been as highly regarded as it is competitively, Call of Duty was looking for a major turn in pacing as well as times of war. When announced Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare looked to change the playing field much like Battlefield 2: Modern Combat had  by taking us to the modern setting of warfare. With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the fame behind the franchise began to take off as it introduced weapon skins, customizations, kill streaks, and even player rank prestige, which demonstrated a players time on multiplayer. Even with the mutliplayer being phenomenal as it was, the campaign took many of the same strides as players got to see a bigger than life private war between the United States Special Forces and an elite group of terrorists that sought to bring the world about them down in flames.

4: Bioshock Trilogy

bioshock_Triple_pack

If the idea of being thousands of leagues below the sea wasn’t already disturbing enough, what about the idea that a science experiment has gone completely wrong, and in turn players are being thrown into the middle of it all in order to explore their options for survival. For Bioshock, that is the case as players found themselves attempting to survive the madness that pursued with special abilities and even the games unique twist of survival horror as fans began to fight their way through the world around them. Luckily the stories knew how to draw the worst out of people as moral decisions eventually came to play.

3: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

January 29th, 2011 @ 19:11:28

When the title initially re-established the franchise, Deus Ex was already renown for its use of futuristic technology and running among titles such as Blade Runner. Luckily for fans, the franchise stuck true to what the series was about, but with technology as well as time, Deus Ex changed in order to modernize itself to a set of RPG and FPS like rules. If that wasn’t enough, players had to make decisions that made their character as well as the player push their limits of patience and situational awareness as players sought to find out what was going on as characters and enemies became augmented with cybertechnology to better their lives as well as become a lethal force within the world. With its success and upcoming launch for the sequel, it’d be hard to not see Square Enix re-releasing the title for next gen consoles as the 1080p/60fps quality the PC version was known for.

2: Soul Sacrifice Delta

SoulSacrificeFront

If you ever wondered how hard games could get, you’ve probably played Dark Souls to get a feel for that or even Bloodborne, but what about this small title by the name of Soul Sacrifice Delta that was made by Keiji Inafune’s team at Comcept, it was not weird to see a title that blended fairy tales and horror together into an intriguing story for PlayStation Vita owners. However, for this adventure, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners were left int he dark without a clue as to what the game was like. Now that some of them have tasted it on Vita? The craving has begun t o move to PlayStation 4 as the console begins to game steady steam-ahead and continues to dominate in today’s market.

1: Dark Souls & Demon’s Souls

demons-souls

Known as the hardest games in the world, both of these two are predecessors to the gruesomely painful series that we’ve come to know and love over the years. Luckily the series has continued to remain as famous as it has been, but there’s something special about both Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. These two games set the stage for what we know and love now as well as their continued evolution in modern gaming. Originally known to be the two toughest games of all time, both Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls challenged gamers in ways never before seen through traps, a story that was as desolate as a desert, and even harder than anything we had seen before. Both games gave a generous nod to the retro style of games where difficulty was non-existent and only was alleviated as the players skill grew. However, these two changed that, and grew increasingly more difficult as players progressed and remained doing so all the way to the end and past that as gamers began to take on New Game+ modes. It’d be a wonder to see what the two would look like upgraded to the Dark Souls III standard.

Closing Statement:

We all know there is a ton of great games from many generations before the current one, which leads to gamers wanting many many ways to revisit their classic games. Out of all the games you played, what ones didn’t make our top ten cut? Let us know in the comments.

Cheap @$$ Gamer: Gaming isn’t just for PC or Consoles. Pick Up That Tablet!

I’ve reported a few times about my passion for free-to-play games, how to save money, and even what to do if you just don’t have the money in general. Today I’ve decided to take a look at one of my passion’s that some of the hardcore of the hardcore don’t consider a part of the gaming genre; tablet gaming on Android and iOS. This passion of mine has come around recently as it has become easily accessible to almost anyone. By anyone I mean literally almost everyone that has a smart phone or a tablet. Heck even Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 have implemented a decent amount of mobile games to their operating systems.

A few of the games that we’re going to talk about might be free-to-play or even come at a small cost. There’s even a few that cost almost the same price as their console or PC counterparts, but they’re still worth a go if you’d rather have them on the go. Granted the tablet versions may not just cut it in the end. Luckily for us, tablet gaming is rather inexpensive and easily enjoyable by anyone.

Samsung_Tab_S2_01

When looking at tablet gaming there’s always the question about App Permissions, memory use, and well performance as tablets are beginning to get the power treatment for gaming and usability. For many of the games listed the tablet used was a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.  As mentioned in our review, the Tab S2 is a powerful, powerful tablet, but it’s not anywhere near the Nvidia Shield, which is something we’ve been tempting to get our hands on for several years now. One of these days we will if we’re lucky enough to hear from Nvidia or even get a chance to have one that we come across in the wild. Till then bare with us as the S2 is a powerhouse and does quite well.

Vainglory_Halcyon_Fold_map

On the first of the list is Vainglory. For many MOBA fans, the title brings an interesting aspect to the well known genre. One that has offered a unique blind of both touch and the subtly of high paced action. With characters ranging from Guardian, Assassin, Jungler, Support, and Warrior, the game offers a unique blend of familiar mechanics on a one lane map with objectives off to the sides. Luckily the game offers out some unique twists at every corner as all characters can be earned by simple gameplay. For those wanting a character that’s not accessible instantly, a few dollars (around 7 USD a character) can purchase a single character. While this alternative is there, it’s advised to save this for unique skins that get posted from time to time or even Early Access characters that may fit your preferred play style.

Epic_War_TD2_SC01.jpg

Next up on the list is a tower defense game I’ve found myself enjoying quite a bit when on the go. It has worked great on both my HTC One M9 as well as the Galaxy Tab S2. The game is called Epic War TD 2. TD standing for Tower Defense. The game idea is simple. A war has broken out. Your objective is to play turrets in a precise fashion in order to keep enemy forces at bay so you can defend your territory, but all this is not as easy as it sounds. The game requires patience, a quick mind, and the ability to swap out turrets faster than they can be placed. This means tactical thinking is a must for those wanting to spend a decent .99 cents or rather 1 USD. The game is gorgeous for being a tablet game and stands with a very simple and streamlined HUD for those looking to play. The game can be found on iOS and Android much like the previously mentioned Vainglory.

Implosion_Never_Lose_Hope_SC01

Next up on the list is Implosion – Never Lose Hope. The unique thing about this game isn’t that it’s just beautiful, but it plays extremely well for being on a tablet. With a rather chunky analog stick and a nice implementation of action command buttons, Implosion – Never Lose Hope is a game that does what most haven’t done on tablets quite well. It’s unique blend of high action AAA like graphics and mechanics keep it alive even though maps can get rather repetitive, but not enough to make you want to quit. Instead its blend of in-app purchases to gameplay don’t take away from the overall experience. While it’d been nice to see the game come to life on say the PlayStation Vita or Nintendo 3DS we can’t be disappointed at what the game has to offer. The boss fights are unique, tough, and will ground players down in the post-apocalyptic setting the game has aimed for. However, it’s not quite like our next game that’ll rip at the hearts of fans as it has already been doing on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One for quite some time now.

This_War_of_Mine_SC01.jpg

This War of Mine is a breathtaking experience. For 4.99 USD on Google Play or 3.99 on the Apple App Store, we’ve been able to play this game for some time on both console and PC. This War of Mine takes place in the fictional city of Pogoren, Graznavia where a group of survivors find themselves hiding together in order to survive the ongoing war. With a ceasefire seeming to be no where in sight, fans must take to this strategically challenging survival game by building up their house, going out at night to find supplies, and somehow managing their survival so that their characters don’t die. This includes making use of limited supplies, surviving break-in’s that will cause loss of food, and even surviving hostile enemies when going out at night. Here character traits do matter as does the characters back-packs as these will determine the supplies they can carry back on their adventure outside of the house. If that doesn’t sound like fun, the next title we have coming up might seem all-to-familiar to some while others may find themselves scratching their heads.

hearthstone_tavern-brawl_01

Blizzard Entertainment has been known for their massively successful franchises such as Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, Heroes of the Storm, their Upcoming title named Overwatch, but also their famed card game by the name of Hearthstone. Originally launched a few years back on P.C., Hearthstone has taken the world by storm since it allows a TCG like experience on mobile platform and PC. Luckily the game allows fans to go from PC to handheld quite easily as the account that you use will be your Battle.net account so that you can migrate your progress seamlessly without any hassle. Much like any free-to-play, Hearthstone does have in-app purchases that allow players to buy the raids at full cost with real money or save up gold via playing in order to unlock them. This also goes for booster packs as well, which means the free-to-play portion may take newcomers a bit longer to build up to the builds that veteran players have.

Ace_of_Arenas_SC01.jpeg

Now we do have a few MOBA’s on here, but there is another worthwhile mentioning as it is quite fun, but at the same time different from my favored go-to mobile MOBA Vianglory. This one is called Ace of Arenas. Ace of Arenas uses the well known hack-‘n-slash mechanics we’ve gotten used to with many Android and iOS based RPG’s and Shooter genres. What this game does differently, however, is take the idea and has gone MOBA with it. With graphics being slightly lower that of games like Vainglory or even Implosion, the game still offers a wide array of characters and player matches allowing for a fun if-not challenging time. The game does feature a free-rotation as well as a unique use of a gem system, which many may seem slightly familiar with thanks to MOBA’s like League of Legends.

While it’s hard to say there aren’t other games out there, there is a hard-time finding games that we know a majority of you will like since there are other genres out there. We’ve seen Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft, and a numerous amount of other games out there. We’ve played so many of them to even bring this article it’s been hard to choose what ones we know would be best for gaming on a budget. Because a majority of games on Android are free-to-play, we decided to grab a few of the hardcore games out there just to show you what is there, and what you can enjoy for free or at a cheap cost, and on-the-go.

Till next week, here’s your Cheap @$$ Gaming article.

Cheap A$$ Gaming – The Debate of What Store Membership is Best for You

itsokbro

So when it comes to gaming, we’re all about cutting corners to save a bit of cash. We all know as gamers the cost of gaming has finally exceeded the 80-120 dollar limit, which means in the short term of things? Our games aren’t cheap. They’re actually quite expensive with micro-transactions, season passes, and other little additions here and there. Luckily a few companies have come out clean and showed their two-tier pricing scale for their games. For Ubisoft they’re showing our games are going to average between 69.99 USD to 99.99 USD depending on the value of content offered with the packaging. For many of us, that means we’re buckling down, holding our breaths, and taking a punch in the kisser. Yes, you read that right. We get hurt and we get hurt badly when it comes to what we do. However, this price scale isn’t that odd at all. Battlefield and Call of Duty entries with season passes will run you roughly 99.99 USD to 120 USD and some loose pocket change, but how can we shave off a few dollars in the long haul? Easy, lets take a look at the memberships such as GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards, Best Buy’s Gamer’s Club Unlocked, and Amazon’s Prime membership to see who takes the crown and the B.A.T.G.R. recommendation.

GameStop_Logo

Power Up Rewards
If you’re a frequent to GameStop and their system, you’re no stranger to their constant ways of trying to cut a few dollars off your pre-orders. You’re also used to the fact it takes a lot of time to even get rewards through their store. If you’re like me, it’s enough to make you cringe, and even pucker a bit at the sour taste in your mouth. While GameStop as a company has been doing a lot to reformat Power Up Rewards, they – at times – just don’t seem to get it right. As a Power Up Rewards veteran, I can already tell you I’ve not been impressed for years. Want that 5 USD coupon? Guess what. That’s going to cost you several hundred to say the least. However, GameStop has recently begun to run a lot more promotions in order to give their membership some appeal. Lately they’ve been doing things such as matching cash with in-store credit to bring in more used games, but also customers.

They’ve also been offering some rather good trade deals, the company has also made a few advances towards better promotions. Like recently, they had an offer with Far Cry Primal; buy the game, get a 1,000 reward points, plus what you already get for just purchasing the game. Good deal, right? We wish, but unfortunately, GameStop is still losing out to both Amazon Prime and even Best Buy. Their promotions are attempts to bring in some extra customers, but unlike the next two titans. This does not necessarily mean GameStop is back in the front of the race. Instead they’re going to have to change up their approach, make better offers, and even show just how good they really are in order to keep ahead of the race. Unfortunately for them, they may not have what it takes, and that spells trouble out for the company as a whole.

Amazon_Prime_Logo

Amazon Prime
If you are an avid Amazon Prime subscriber, you already know the company has a mean streak with creating some awesome deals, but also pulling a bit more money out of your pocket. With them now splitting Kindle Unlimited from Prime Membership, we won’t be surprised if they soon split both the movie and music departments away also and force users into subscribing to more services to earn just a few more dollars. But what this online giant market has done, is joined Best Buy in the 20% off of new games, but this theirs? Only through pre-orders that are directly coming from the company themselves. This means that any game you pre-order will see 20 dollars cut from the top and thrown down just for you to have. However, this does not mean hold your breath and pray that you’ll save  a giant amount. This does spell trouble for those of you who may want your game on day of release.

There has been some issues regarding this, but in the long run? It’s 20% off and you are guaranteed your copy of your game and its pre-order bonuses, which we’ll admit that Amazon has had some great offers in the past. However, that doesn’t always mean you’ll get that collector’s edition as we have seen those disappear faster than both GameStop and Best Buy. So you may want to hit multiple outlets if you are expecting a rare copy of a game. Y’know, like that DOOM Limited Collector’s Edition with the Revenant statue.

best-buy-logo-black.jpg

Best Buy’s Gamer’s Club Unlocked
While we’ve never been quite impressed with Best Buy’s attempts at gaming, we can say that they are truly trying to revitalize a user base, and a consumer base. With Gamer’s Club Unlocked, Best Buy has decided to once more step up to the plate and attempt a grand slam, or if you want to be honest – undermining their competition. While Wal-Mart has never been a great place to go, GameStop has been decent, Amazon has been a crowning champion, but here comes Best Buy on their pink little bicycle, crash helmet, and a sucker in their mouth attempting to ramp a plywood ramp. Guess what? They’ve made the jump and are doing it over, and over, and over again.

But how did Best Buy manage this? We’ve become loyal to using their new service, offering between 20% off new games, 10% off used, and double points on all game purchases, this was too good to pass up, but they also offer rewards for trade-in’s, which seems to sucker punch GameStop quite well. If these two titans were in the ring? It’d be a helluva good show to watch as we know fists would be flying. What GameStop doesn’t have though, is Best Buy has one-upped them yet again. With certain pre-orders Best Buy offers between 5 USD coupons and 10 USD coupons. While these offers aren’t stackable, they are quite enjoyable, and ones that keep customers coming back. It’s why we do. The certificates, however, aren’t like GameStop’s where they are instantly redeemable. They instead are ones that you will have to wait between 15 to 30 days to see moved to your account so that you may use them. While that seems like a bit of a nail-biter, we can honestly say it’s worth it in the long haul.

joker-burning-money

Who’s the Victor?
While some of us like to be cheap a$$ gamer’s, it’s hard to say that GameStop is even in the ring anymore. Instead they’ve been put in time out as their offers have begun to decline and not keep a grasp upon those hoping to have any form of relief when committing financially to games. While Amazon doesn’t have a loyalty program or even a rewards program of any sort, it’s nice to see they are joining in and finally giving Best Buy a run for their money. With some of their exclusive pre-order bonuses, it’s hard to say that Amazon isn’t in this race. Instead they are slightly ahead of GameStop, but not by much, but what our third competitor does offer is what these two titans don’t.

If you’re familiar with Jason and the Giant, you’ll know that Best Buy was one that suffered in this arena. Their prices are sometimes much higher than others, but with competitor pricing becoming more frequent and allowing for price matches with Amazon, it’s hard to say they aren’t ahead in this race. With their unique loyalty program through Gamer’s Club Unlocked and My Best Buy Rewards programs stacking, the points add up quick, which means fast discounts on games within a month. Due to this Best Buy has become the best one we’ve found to save a good 20-30 dollars with within a month if you are one that buys multiple games. With base games going between 59.99 USD and 89.99 USD it’s nice to see Best Buy takes those offers down to 48 USD and some change before tax and even 63 USD and some change. So our victor? Best Buy wins the day and we hate saying it, but if GameStop want’s to stay in the race, they’ll need to re-work their points scaling as well as special offers to bring in customers already using Gamer’s Club Unlocked. Unless you’re, well, a PC Gamer then Steam, GoG, and Humble Bundle have your back.

Theory Craft (Heavy Spoiler Warning): Warframe and Dark Sector Exist in the Same Universe Part 1

warframe

As many of you know, I have a thing for Warframe, but I also have a thing for Dark Sector. Dark Sector was inexplicably one of the worst, but best games I played in years when it came to pandemic type titles. Little had I known it is what inspired Warframe, I wouldn’t have had as much interest as I do  now, and that is where this first entry in our monthly “Theory Craft” series stars today. The first one is a two part series discussing and explaining the Warframe and Dark Sector history and Part 2 will explain how they come together in some plausible way.

In Warframe, our universe has a very diluted story. For those unfamiliar, Warframe takes place a universe that was recently explained to us through Update 18, where we learn the truth about who Lotus, or rather both the Orookin and the Tenno’s were and are before we can begin closing the gap and linking Dark Sector into the whole thing. Please note, however, none of this is confirmed by DE and is a direct theory created by me.

In the new and first cinematic quest line we begin to learn more about the Lotus and her Sentient name “Natah”. In this latest piece of lore we find out about what has really happened in the warframe universe thus far. Please note, however, there are also no solid dates or timeline, just an idea of what is going on. In the story we learn that the Oro are partially sentient, a creature created from possibly energy. This gives us the founding idea that the Oro could possibly create a symbiotic relationship with whom they bind to, this would give us the idea that the sentient beings such as Hunhow and Natah are possibly immortal and can not age, but also how they gained their abilities to control the special powers the way they do.

Warframe_Grineer

Under the guise of a better future, we learn that the Orokin elite, human civilization was capable of spanning throughout the solar system. They were able to inhabit other planets, further technology advancement, and even go to the extent of entering a golden age. One that places the Orokin minority at the height of this new human empire. In turn, with this age of expansion the Orokin created two lesser and more subservient “races” or perhaps these races were already in place and the Orokin utilized them a bit better. The Grineer, meant to be manual laborers and a war machine, while the Corpus were meant to be administrators, scientists, and bureaucrats. This giving the Corpus the delegation of government, and such with the guidance of the Orokin themselves.

Over the centuries, they would begin to enter a decline, and the Orokin Empire would approach itself becoming near collapse as the resources of the Origin system began to stretch thin. With this happening, discontent would brew across both Orokin and the subservient races they created. This causing the Orokin to head to the nearby Tau system where they would have constructs we know as Solar Rails be placed in so they could instantly travel between the systems. Over time the plan to travel to the Tau system would begin, the Orokin  would begin terraforming (or so we think) and allow this system to become inhabitable. While in the process of this, they would also begin to achieve their own form of sentience in order to evolve past what the Orokin had predicted (This assumption is based upon the order that Shadow Stalker stepped before when he met Hunhow). In turn, the Orokin would travel from the Tau System to the Rail at Pluto, here they would make contact with things that they believed were just machines and discover the newest race; Sentients.

Warframe_TombsoftheSentient

In view of how the Orokin saw things, the Sentients were probably considered abberations, and in turn, a war wold be started as Orokin’s would force their superiority upon the Sentients, and attempt to wipe them out singlehande. To this efect, the Orokin have taken off more than they could possibly manage as the Old War begins to flare up. In turn, the Sentients would begin to overwhelm their enemy forces by subverting higher levels of technology in order to combat their new enemy. Here we can assume that the Sentients would possibly have used proxies to fight, machines that were designed for specific combat (Warframes?). This is also where it would be safe to assume that the Orokin would discover that Grineer, their slave race, would make great warriors. Here they would begin to clone them, weaponize them with lower tech weapons than what the corpos would have, and sent them to combat the Sentients who are holding down their grasp fairly well in this war.

As the Orokin begin to find their low tech soldiers futility rather low, the Orokin would design a new form of life, the virus known as “technocyte virus”. Rather they would weaponize a virus that had been found on Earth after it had been unleashed. The results of weaponizing the virus ended up being unleashed upon the corpus, where in turn, thousands of troops would be created. The result was not greater than the outcome they had hoped for. The infestation itself would begin to spread like a wild fire, and in turn it would assume a mind of its own, much like it did in Dark Sector. Here it would allow itself to grow as it became obvious in its current stage that the virus would not subvert machines, and so the Sentients themselves were not directly affected. With the Sentient advance barely slowed, the Orokin would grow desperate and would seek to exploit the void. In the story “The Second Dream” we learn that the void energy would leave the Sentients poisoned and they would be unable to enter it. While having put some of their own ships that were designed to expos them to void energy, they accidentally would recreate something that was discovered. This corruption in some way hurt the Oro, allowing the resulting Tenno to channel their raw void energies. The warframes in turn would be built as conduits for them as Tenno weapons.

NecroPromo

In turn, the Tenno would be revealed to be extremely efficient killing machines, and in turn they would be able to push back the Sentient threat as they began to put them on the edge of defeat. Here they would also almost capture the Outer terminus, but in turn, the Sentients would have one last trick. They would sent their own through the void. In turn they send some of their own through the void. Here we learn that Natah is a sentient who was created to subert the Tenno themselves, and likely through the use of Warframes. Here she would arrive to the Origin system, but was not able to prevent the Orokin forces from recapturing and crippling or even destroying Outer Terminus. Here, they would lose contact witht he Tau System and the Orokin would take this as a victory.

Over time we learn Natah would grow to gain control of the Tenno, and with this, she would bring them back to the Orokin rulers. There she would order the Tenno to cut all the Orokin down. With that chaos would be unleashed allowing the Grineer to rebel and the Corpus to flee on their own. With the Infestation out of control, the Orokin, Grineer, and Corpus would remain unchecked. Balance would be lost. Without the forces needed and them being hunted by Natah’s Tenno, the Grineer, Corpus and Orokin would disappear for some time. The Origin System as we now know it would be in chaos. There is no ruler, but the Sentients and Orokin have been reduced to nothing. With Natah now barren from having traveled through Void travel using the Solar Rails, she would fail to execute her fina command and would allow the Tenno to live in their dreams. Here she would dawn the crown of the Lotus and would become the voice to the Tenno.

As their leader, she would gain a foothold on the Origin system by maintaining order. During this time, she would soon realize that her Tenno, rather her children as she sees them, would be doomed. They would die and she would have no way to make more of these Tenno due to the absence of the Orokin. In turn, she must prepare for the inevitable return of the Sentients, thus she hides her children in “The Second Dream” where they would believe they awoke inside their Warframes (the games introduction).

As centuries pass, the Tenno and the Orokin have barely been remembered as the Old War becomes history among the stars. Over time, the Grineer were able to take the Origin System through ruthless domination. Though with it they also had found themselves disfigured and damaged through over cloning, while the Corpus themselves were able to carve a spot in the system through commerce and technology. With some attrition between the two, a war has not been heavily present. Over time the Grineer and the Corpus would begin to discover Orokin artifacts. With these artifacts they would also find small remnants of the Tenno. With this happening, Lotus would realize it’s time for her to awaken her children as the Grineer and Corpus would surely use the Tenno for their own reasons. With the Origin system in a more stable situation, the Tenno would act as infiltrators, but also assassin’s to the Lotus herself. They would complete their objectives without fer of retaliation from either side.

Warframe_SolarRailSabotage.png

During this time, The Corpus have begun to rebuild the Outer Terminus while the researcher of the Grineer, Tyl Regor, would find and break into the vault where a Sentient has been resting. Thus the story of the Second Dream had taken place. But there are a few things that do seem to need answered within the Warframe story arch now that it’s theorized and laid out. During the Hidden Messages quest, players will find that during the transitional timeframe where the Tenno were already following Lotus they were still fighting for the Orokin as they would oppose the ancients. This presents that it’s likely that Lotus was sent to directly infiltrate the Orokin, but not to subvert more Tenno to her secret army. This is also backed by the idea that Hunhow, the Sentient, tells his daughter Natah (Lotus) that “We crossed the gap, wombs in ruin, to bring and end to this. We servered the worlds, let them destroy me, why is the sequence not complete?”

Warframe_Lotus_Tenno_SC01

This quote hints at the idea that Natah, rather Lotus, was an insider to the Orokin Empire, there she would take her time to control the Tenno and build an army for the Sentients. This however, also gives the idea that this was used to preserve the Tau System from a Tenno invasion in case their first plan failed. Or… The more possible answer, both of these were possible, and she was to prepare the Tenno for two separate missions at once. The last possibility is a common theory among many. The Lotus wasn’t a Sentient and the infiltration was even more subtle. However, this means she would’ve been an agent from somewhere else and the Lotus’ control over the Tenno would be to see how the best course to fight the Sentients would’ve been taken. But how would this play into Dark Sector, if at all?

In Dark Sector players take the role of Hayden Tenno. An operative who has been discharged from his military service dishonorably, but also a man that works now as a secret agent, and one that does the dirty work for others in turn. Over the course of his story, we witness our protagonist become infected with the technocyte virus by a mysterious creature wearing the Nemesis warframe design we now see on Nyx within Warframe. We in turn through the game take on soldiers using biosuits, high powered weapons, and even the infestation as the virus has begun to run rampant after a failed test that was meant to be contained. As the game goes through, we witness Hayden begin to change. Thanks to his bonding with the virus and not going mad due to congenital analgesia, he was unable to feel pain, therefore the virus didn’t make him go mad during his search for a nanotechnology specialist. With the virus only affecting his right arm, somehow the virus allowed him to create the weapon we have come to know as “Glaive”.

Dark_Sector_Hayden_Nemesis.png

As players moved through the story, we learn that Hayden’s suit of armor at the end of the game is not caused by the virus, but rather a unique “Warframe” that would enhance his combat abilities and keep him safe. This suit in Warframe would be later named Excalibur and would become an idealistic design for those wanting a close range Warframe. A trademark that carried over with this was also the fact that the Lotus logo could be seen on his left shoulder throughout the game. This hint is possible that Sentients later on could have been created by humans on Earth using biotechnology or even nano-technology to transcend past the virus as it would run rampant through the world rather quickly due to Mezner’s insanity and Hayden’s inability to contain the virus.

Dark_Sector_Heavy_Quad_Tank.png

A early stage Jackal before the Corpus made them?

The game also foreshadowed Nemesis as a cross between both the Rhino and Nyx Warframes due to the overall appearance. Another nod towards Dark Sector is the enemy created by the virus known as “Stalker”. Our assumption that this Stalker could also be the one from the game would also give a nod towards the fact that our current Shadow Stalker is maddened by something that happened to him. Rather the fact he was driven mad by either not entering the dream or having been in it to long. Both ideas could be explained at a later date as the story expands.

But how would this link the two games together? Stay tuned for Part 2 coming this week.

Cheap A$$ Gaming – Free to Play Games We Want on Consoles

Free-to-Play gaming isn’t all that strange of a market to console gamers. It’s a market that users of mobile platforms such as iOS and Android have gotten used to a while back and even PC has become heavily accustomed to before them. Over the years, the market has grown, and we are seeing games that stand in the Triple “A” quality. We’ve seen titles such as DOTA, Smite, Heroes of the Storm,Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution and even League of Legends take the world by storm. These free-to-play games with paid options have been a driving force in game development, but there are always a few that have slipped through the cracks or stand out to the point that they deserve a release on consoles. So we’ve made a short list of ones that.. Well would do quite well on consoles when the time comes.

So you may not be familiar with this classic franchise that kids in the 90’s and 2000’s were growing fans of. The series was not known just for it’s twitch shooting, but for it’s innovative use of vehicles, skin mods, weapon mod’s, modded game modes, and even it’s use of skiing across maps using jet packs while using disc launchers to annihilate your enemies. In recent years the game series was re-implemented by Hi-Rez Studios (Smite and Paladin’s) as a free-to-play on PC with paid options. Now? We feel with the next gen consoles, it might just be time for Hi-Rez to launch the game on next gen and wrestle with games like PlanetSide 2 and Warframe.

We all got to experience that almost awful game Ghost Recon Future Soldier. It wasn’t that the game was bad, it was more-so that the games maps were horribly unbalanced and unlocks didn’t feel noteworthy. Taking note of those changes that were needed, Ubisoft decided to join the free-to-play market with Ghost Recon Phantoms, which takes the best parts of the Ghost Recon franchise and puts them into a market where players can play freely, unlock stuff through the in-game unlock system, or simply buy what they need for cosmetic appeals or even early unlocks. Not something we haven’t seen in other games before.

For anyone familiar with the Legacy of Kain series knows that fans have been clamoring for another game in the franchise. Well with the not-so-finished ending to the series, we’ve been hunkering down for the day the series gets a reboot or even a continuation. While that doesn’t seem in the works, Square Enix did decide to let a company make their new Free-to-Play title, which seems irrevocably like a Legacy of Kain title. The game pits players as vampires against a team of humans. The idea is simple. Beat the objectives needed using two very different play styles in order to wither each others teams to nothing. While this game is still a recent release, Nosgoth does find itself as an enjoyable title for those who want nothing, but pure competition. Plus, it has vampires.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m guilty of having no-lifed the crap out of the game for nearly 28 levels in a weekend. Sitting around at my cousins house allowed this to happen and allowed me to really get a feel for the games gunner class. The game is very-much a third person title that offers small cosmetics and the likes at the cost of real-life currency. While that may seem like a slight downer, Tera is as big and as crazy as games can get as the development team is constantly putting on contests and community challenges for fans of the game. With how it plays? Tera would fit right in with games like Warframe and even Final Fantasy XIV with a steam-punk twist. Wait… FFXIV has that. Who cares, it’s a great and enjoyable game.

If you ever wanted a replacement for the need to play another Jade Empire-esque game since the game launched, Blade and Soul is a game that doesn’t just seek to be a martial arts filled title with flashy moves and weapons. Instead Blade and Soul is a rather in-depth game that offers tons of customization, gameplay mechanics, and a decent amount of end-game content. While fans in the west have been clamoring for this game, it’ll be interesting if the game doesn’t get enough noise to come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within the foreseeable future.

Black Desert is an interesting MMO. With its extremely in-depth character creation, paid options, and even triple “A” style graphics, Black Desert will easily put MMO’s like Final Fantasy XIV and Tera Online in their place for who has the best graphics, bounciest physics, and most realistic graphics engine. Lets not forget it’s third-person like hack-and-slash approach that’ll send enemies flying into the skies.

Dirty Bomb having come out of open beta not long ago, is a game that presses players to play characters that they unlocked via item boxes. These item boxes contain character cards, which players will use to continue playing through the game. These character cards offer characters with unique talents, health, and even appearances. While this approach seems weird, it keeps Dirty Bomb as an interesting and rather entertaining game as they go. If blasting your way through post-apocalyptic London isn’t your idea, then we aren’t sure what is! The game is unique, fun, and quite a bit of a unique twist on team based games.

I’ve actually put a little bit of time into Red 5’s futuristic sci-fi MMO that offers a unique blend of action, shooting, and RPG elements into one. The game takes place after a tragic event happens, the world ends, and a new enemy called “The Chosen” emerge from the ashes of a shuttle. With them came death, war, and the fight to survive for the last remnants of humanity. With them being thinned out, a special group of operatives have arisen, and seek to protect the last bits of humanity in order to keep them safe.

With all of these great titles, it’s hard not to say, which one we want the most, because we do want all of them. It’s just a matter of when they will come to consoles.

Opinion: Far Cry Primal Reinvents the Franchise Perfectly

FCP_02_ULL_GOLD_1080p_ESRB_1453249021

Lets sit down and look at the modern day of games. Today we are surrounded by games that emphasize themselves upon real-world modern-day problems – drugs, weapons, guerilla warfare, third as well as first world problems, and even insane leaders who just deserve to perish. This is a common trend we’ve seen in recent days. With titles such as Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, we got to see the ugly side of privatized military, Far Cry’s 3 and 4 let us see an insane warlord and a rather interesting dictator gone warlord. Sound familiar? It’s a trend that has continued on for the last decade or so. The what and why have changed, but not the overall outcome. In recent days, we’ve seen titles that decide to start breaking the trend, and even go away from the idea all together. Some of them are the fight for humanity, survival of the fittest, and even the simplest things in life – friends and family.

In the past week we’ve finally got to go hands-on with one of the most anticipated games of 2016 – Far Cry Primal from Ubisoft. The title reverts from what we’ve known about the franchise for the past.. Well decade or so. The team has taken off their coats, rolled up their sleeves, and dove ten thousand almost twelve thousand years into humanities history. They’ve decided to let the series shed its old skin and grow anew, much like a phoenix, and their approach has worked rather well. In an extravagant way of displaying their finesse for storytelling, design, and locations this new approach has been exotic to say the least. Their world of Oros is truly believable. The war between tribes, believable, but also the sense for the need to survive comes to the helm of the game. While riding in on a Wooly Mammoth is a sound idea just as much as riding into combat on a saber toothed tiger sounds as fun as it is, the game puts the ideas on a backburner, and even lets it simmer so that players can enjoy the larger details the teams at Ubisoft have designed.

Goodbye guns, bombs, and other fun things. Hello Spears, Clubs, and Pointy Sticks

FCP_ANNOUNCE_SCREEN_003_EMBARGO_OCT_6_9AM_PST_1444078387

When departing from what we’ve known with any modern title in the FPS genre, it’s hard to really categorize where a game belongs, and why. It’s easier said than done on any scale, but it happens as the genre is a generic label, much like cola is for any soda that’s dark in colour. What does work though is the fact that the team has cast away guns, knives, and explosives only to go primitive as we weren’t able to see our ancestors with those mentioned items. Instead they were surviving off clubs made of bone, bows made of wood and animal tendon or even reed peelings, but also knives as well as spears made from wood and stone held together by anything possible clear down to animal hide.

What the game does right is a massive amount of things, but what it does the best is giving us a glimpse of true survival that is brutal, dangerous, and has put humanity on the lowest portion of the food chain. With saber toothed tigers lurking about at every corner, vicious packs of canines, and even those huge wooly mammoths, humanity is at its finest point in the history of the species. In doing so we are able to test out the things that would’ve been used to survive such as the mentioned weapons, spears, clubs, and other pointy items including traps, which have been absent from the series since Far Cry 2. While they were there, they weren’t as useful as they were in Far Cry and Primal has made them return in all their, well almost all their former glory.

This means that players will survive, but they will require knowledge of all their weapons and how to use them accordingly.

Goodbye Modern Languages and Hello Primitive Tongues

Let’s pretend for a second that modern English (especially our American English) has been wiped clean from the map. Same with Italian, Greek, Latin, Russian, and others have been completely wiped off the map. The dialects are all, but modern. Welcome to the new world of Uros. A world that is primitive, brutal, and does not know the modern languages we do. But the question you may be wondering is one I’ll answer. How does this work out? Does it truly make the game more immersive?

At first the game truly can throw someone off since they will be reading the subtitles. Trust me, I’ve been there and done it, but over time it was as if the subtitles no longer existed. I found myself briefly glancing at them to take in the lines the characters were saying only to find myself fascinated with what was going on. The world feels alive, one that we could live and even touch if it were possible to do so. The most amazing part? The fact that Ubisoft’s teams were careful and researched quite a bit before bringing their language in the game to life. The detail shows and even makes the title more immersive than before.

How Far Cry Has Gone from Open World War to Open World Survival

FCP_ANNOUNCE_SCREEN_004_EMBARGO_OCT_6_9AM_PST_1444078410

Some Far Cry fans may hate me for this and call me wrong. While in many ways I am, one thing is true. The series has always been about survival to some extent. Players gather herbs, meat from animals, and crafting materials from the world around them. The difference in Far Cry Primal? Survival is the focus. This means hunting, gathering, working with your tribesmen are going to be at the forefront. With this goes the need for modern medicine, modern knowledge of elements, and back to the stone age survival needs that our true ancestors would’ve had. The use of flint for fire, the need to wonder perilously through caves to find resources. Craft fur clothing for colder climates and even protect your village from impending attacks.

While at first the game may feel similar to former Far Cry titles, the Wenja Tribe (your characters tribe) will feel small at first. One that is on the end of extinction due to enemy tribes, and dangerous hunts. With progression through the game, the tribe will grow, and so will the need to survive as resources will need to be gathered from around the world of Uros. With the need to go further out, so does the need to survive, and the dangers that come with it. This is where the world of Far Cry Primal has expanded and even made itself more dangerous than previous titles as players will worry about snakes, bears, mammoths, saber tooth tigers, wolf packs, and even enemy tribes at every turn. Now if only we had to worry about illness, exhaustion, and the likes in a survival mode. Damn.
Going Back to Modern Could Hurt the Franchise

While working on the review play through we have, it was hard to go back to titles like Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4. I grew accustomed to Brody and Ajay. They are likable characters in a realistic setting. One that provided fantastical dangers such as enemy troop checkpoints, traffic routes, and even skirmishes, but there is something to be said when removing oneself from the modern day conflicts of life and third world countries to an entirely new setting.

Far Cry Primal – as stated previously – takes away from the need to viciously fight through extremely inhabited areas of people, but instead utilizes the wild life and people to make it more vicious than ever. It takes away the modernized sense of vicious tenacity to bringing down a more humanized sense of survival and discord. Doing this brings a more human approach to it and allows for players to get a glimpse of a world that we had only once imagined. The only issue here? It leaves the yearning desire for the game to go fully into the survival mode where food, water, and overall health does matter. Then again, some may tell me to go play Ark: Survival if that’s the case.

Closing Thoughts

When looking at Far Cry Primal, it was hard to accept the fact the series was going back in time, that it was going to destroy the franchise for what it were. While I was interested in the idea of fighting against the wildlife in that time such as saber tooth tigers, wooly mammoths, wolves, and even wooly rhinos, I was trying to remain not to hyped for a new installment to a series.

While the anticipation grew towards the launch, I can say the outcome has been quite pleasant and even entertaining. So much so that our review will be coming out next week based on the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

The Weekly Rant: Smite on PS4, HTC Vive’s Pricing, and Bioshock Collection for Next Gen

This week has been one with a few good size releases and even some better sized news. Fresh off the table are two things that have hit the mainstream, one being that HTC Thrive price has been confirmed, pre-order dates in place, and the hardware shipping with it listed. Meanwhile on the other end we’ve learned that Smite has officially begun its launch onto PlayStation 4 with the closed Alpha having started just very recently. Oh and did we mention the fact that the Brazilian ratings boards have possibly confirmed a Bioshock: The Collection for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4? While the PlayStation 3 idea might just be a bad one, we can’t argue that it may be a decent idea, and one that’s worth possibly buying into for those who don’t own a PC for gaming or, well, have had the chance to jump to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One as of yet.

So lets break down this weeks rant into a few sections.

Smite: Battleground of the Gods on PlayStation 4

There’s no secret when it comes down to the idea that I absolutely love a good MOBA and I’m always willing to give one a go. After all I’ve invested hundreds of hours into Vainglory since it’s launch on Android last year and still continue to play it this day. Now SMITE is a bit of a different story since I’ve played a decent amount on Xbox One due to convenience of a rather large screen compared to the one that my laptop has built in (we really do need a new review computer, add that to the list of things to do, when possible). SMITE is a rather interesting take on the MOBA genre since the game is one, if not the first third person MOBA that offers a third person shooter or even a third person hack and slash view of the battlefield.

The game itself is rather interesting as it brings deities from beliefs from around the world. Players can take on the role of playable characters such as Athena, Kukulkan, Nezha, Bellona, Kali, and many more through out the religions of the world. While the game has been largely available to the PC and Xbox One communities, the game has finally begun its movement to dominate the PlayStation 4’s free-to-play market, much like titles such as Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution, and even War Thunder. With the beta coming in March, it’ll be nice to see the community for SMITE grow in size.

HTC Vive Priced at a Steep 799.99 USD

HTC_Vive_Two_Family.png

When we first wrote about the cost of VR gaming due to the Oculus Rift price announcement, our jaws tightened, and our wallets began to flicker with flames coming to life. With the price leak of the HTC Vive, our hearts have sank and our wallets withered away as we watched any hope for affordable VR coming to life become a possibility. Instead one of my personal favourite hardware manufacturers has jumped in at the high-end price of hardware marketing. Unlike the Oculus Rift that was priced at 599.99 USD, it looks like HTC may have just taken an arrow to the knee on this one, and hobbled to the back of the VR race.

With Sony having not priced the PlayStation VR just yet, we can only hope that Sony doesn’t follow in the path of both the Vive and Rift so that players may have an affordable experience, but if anything sticks true – the future of VR gaming may just cause some people to set their wallets on fire and walk away without any form of a smile on their faces. Only thing HTC can do now? Hope that UploadVR is wrong and they’ll be dropping the price due to the feedback of consumers who might just not want to spend that much on a VR headset with two controllers. I know I sure as heck won’t be.

BioShock: The Collection Rated in Brazil

Bioshock-2-splicer-trio

We all know that if someone said that they haven’t been even the slightest of the last gen franchise BioShock, we all know they are either lying or they genuinely aren’t interested. My guess is more-so the first half since the franchise takes a rather interesting turn with the idea of human genetics and alteration. Let alone does it do that, the first two games are almost legitimately skin crawling as players will take on enemies that are physically damaged, mentally degraded due to their need for Adam, and even psychotically motivated with anything they do.

With the series having only three installments and a handful of DLC, it’d be an interesting move if publisher 2K decided to bring the franchise over to the next gen consoles with a bit of polishing, and even higher frame rates and resolutions than when they were previously released. Though the idea that the games could possibly see a Sleeping Dogs type release can make anyone cringe since Sleeping Dogs didn’t see just a whole lot of upgrading between last gen and the current. If BioShock does anything, we just hope 2K gives a true HD re-release for home consoles. Who wouldn’t want to exit a bathysphere once more only to take on lunatics. If the titling is true and this is happening, we’ll see the collection on all consoles for Xbox and PlayStation as well as PC. Wait, why PC? That’s beyond us, but this does give us some hope. Now if only we could get titles like Dragon’s Dogma and the Mass Effect Trilogy on the current gen.

Lets just pretend for a moment that all of this is actually coming true. Mostly the BioShock portion, we already know that the series has become beloved by their fans, and with SMITE now on PlayStation 4, we can only hope that BioShock: The Collection and even a remaster of Dragon’s Dogma will head this way. Till then? We’ll be content playing some of this years upcoming titles and even taming some saber toothed cats on Far Cry Primal while clearing the streets of Manhattan as Division agents with Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Op-Ed: Why Returning to Bloodborne is Amazing After a Year

Bloodborne_SC01

There’s always something unique about games from the team at From Software as well as Sony Studio Japan. Both have created tremendously creative titles and ones that constantly pushed players to the edge of their seats. Even with some of the latest games, it’s hard to say that any of them have really done what titles like Bloodborne and Gravity Rush have done. Bloodborne of course being the one that both teams worked together to create in order to bring hardcore Souls franchise fans over to the PlayStation 4 due to the titles exclusivity.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I’m a glutton for punishment, more punishment, and even more punishment when it comes to difficulty. I spent days, if not weeks conquering Demon’s Souls only to forget to save my trophy progress, back-up my save data, and unfortunately lose it all. That doesn’t mean I haven’t put the game to the back of my mind, but it didn’t have the beckoning Bloodborne did after having been stuck at the notorious boss Gerhman. Having fallen many times to his blunderbuss or even his scythe in its heavy weapon mode, I resumed coming back a good 100+ times only to die in some other manner. Finally I found myself in frustration only to uninstall the game, open up some hard drive space on my PlayStation 4, and move onto other games I had backlogged from being busy as a journalist as well as an office aid.

After spending almost a year away from Bloodborne and a 1TB HDD upgrade on the review PlayStation 4, I felt it was time to come back to the game since the DLC had launched. Last night was the adventure that I never thought I would have. Why? I didn’t play the game much in coop. I honestly didn’t find the need for it since at the time my internet router (luckily it wasn’t my ISP or the modem) seemed about as dependable as a car with little to no gas going down a highway. You see where this going, I can imagine. After a few small tweaks, new router, new HDD, and even an upgraded internet speed through the ISP, it was time to once more resume Bloodborne, but this time? In coop. As you can imagine, I did run into a few headaches where I found myself being kicked from the games server till falling upon a few suggestions to shut down my PS4 completely, and then restart it after a few minutes. After doing that I was once more on my way to attempting the Chalice Dungeon’s, farming up Blood Echoes, and even once more attempting to slay Gerhman once and for all. Sadly? I didn’t know the little trick about the umbilical cords playing a role into the games ending like I should’ve. Only having had my character use 2/3 needed for the perfect ending? I found myself with the “OK” ending and at the help of my buddy Garret Sullivan (thanks again, man!). After having killed him, it was time to head onto New Game+, but at a speedy pace with his help since I managed to pick up the DLC. 20 bucks for a bunch of new cool stuff and bosses that will make me break my teeth from clenching my jaw? Sounds like fun.

But returning to Bloodborne after a year was something different than what I thought it would be. Rather than being a small adventure of relearning everything, it was like riding a bicycle. Little by little, it all comes back, and players will find themselves once more accustomed to what they had been doing. Sure their sense of direction may be a little off, but not in the manner it might be a game breaker. We’ve all been there. Ever tried to go back to playing a game like Rainbow Six after a few hours of Call of Duty? Yea, doesn’t work out well for some. Trust me, I’d know. Heck even returning to Fallout 4 was a difficult after a few long sessions of Call of Duty or Battlefield. Though I know that is not the topic of today, but let that sink in a bit first.

When returning to Bloodborne there were a few difficulties I was faced with. One, I had to relearn the control scheme to some extent. Luckily I’ve played enough of the Souls games this wasn’t too hard to do, but figuring out a few special commands, that was a different challenge all together. Secondly, figuring out the areas I was using to farm in order to gear out. Thirdly, was the difficulty of re-learning my timing for Gerhman. Fourthly, trying not to walk away from the game again, and successfully not doing so. Fifthly, was talking myself into buying the DLC since my pal Garret has vowed to once more take my filthy casual self through the new content. But what made coming back to Bloodborne unique wasn’t like what you’d expect with games like Call of Duty where everything gets tweaked, rebalanced, and based on how players play. Instead Bloodborne finds itself with a few minor tweaks, upgrades, and eventually all new content, which it recently has. The uniqueness behind it is the fact the game is easy to come back to. While relearning your timing, footing, and pacing may be a bit disorienting at first, Bloodborne is one of those that comes back to you rather quickly once you remember where you were and through a bit of trial and error. If you can get past that? Bloodborne is a game that deserves the appraises it has gotten. It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the title.
