Ever wanted to have fun in the pending apocalypse? Our friend Ryan Philips who is the former PR and Marketing manager at NIS America has left, and in return he has started up a new development game studio last year. The name of his studio? Mr. Tired Media. We’ve been receiving a few emails from him in regards to the studios new indie RPG, which is a Japanese RPG like title, but developed here in the West.

In the adventure him and business partner, but also former NIS America employee, Nick Doerr, have teamed up to work on this game for the past two years. Their title has been sitting on Kickstarter in order to bring their dreams to reality. So how can you help them with their in production title known as Undead Darlings ~no cure for love~? By heading over to Kickstarter you can help bring this hybrid visual novel dungeon crawling RPG, which has been intentionally designed with a Japanese aesthetic by Nick and Ryan to life. How fare will they go for your help? I’ll have to let Ryan tell you.

“Literally anything you can do to help show your audience our announcement would be miraculous for us, resulting in backflips of glee and much additional mana to your respective mana pools,” States Ryan the President of Mr. Tired Media.

How long do you have? Exactly thirteen days to head over to their Kickstarter page and help back the game to prepare for its full on development cycle. Currently the game is sitting at $15,521 out of their $50,000 goal. Stay tuned as we hope to bring you more good news about this game in its upcoming days.

Our Take:

As a team of people who give back to our community as much as we can without saying it, we love to do what we can in order to help people as well as those who could use it. We are looking at meeting up with several of these charities and getting their takes on the QuakeCon community, but also what you, our readers, can do in order to help give back also. You can be guarenteed we will be doing some small donations to them, but also donating blood to help provide assistance to those in need.

Our Take:

QuakeCon is an event I’ve grown to love over the years, but having attended it last year made it all the more fun. QuakeCon is an event that has become one of the most beloved gaming events where fans can get an exclusive look at what Bethesda Studios and their teams have been hard at work doing, and this year seems to be no exception to that rule. If you are attending, give us a hollar, and we’d be glad to meet up with you and help celebrate the 20th anniversary of QuakeCon.

Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, Has Passed Away

Written by Dustin Murphy

satoru-iwata-directly-to-you

With eyes filled with tears, we here at Blast Away the Game Review have learned that Satoru Iwata has passed away at the Age of 55 due to a Bile Duct Growth. In an official press statement released by Nintendo we have received a confirmation of this news. Many of you may remember that Iwata did not attend E3 last year on the referral of his doctors in order not to travel, which was to help alleviate a growth that was found in his bile duct. Last year he also noted to his colleagues that he knew his illness would be hard to treat, and may not be treatable.

It pains us knowing that the last Nintendo Direct we saw with Iwata was his last, but many should remember him for his hilarious antics, his costumes, his warm smile, but also his programming he had done at the HAL Laboratory, and thus lead him to his helping create Kirby and the Super Smash Bros. franchises before his ascendance to the top job of CEO of Nintendo in 2002.

Thanks to his hard work, Iwata was able to introduce the world to Nintendo’s largest and most profound successes to date, the Nintendo DS and Wii lines of consoles, which would take on the video game market in the decade following. Many unfamiliar with Iwata are new to learn that he was not related to the founding Yamauchi family, but he carried traditions of being approachable as a person, that he loved to interact with his fans, but he would also take on the commonly hosted Nintendo Direct video as well as Nintendo Tree House in the following years.

Iwata was the first president of Nintendo not related to its founding Yamauchi family. He cultivated an approachable personality through company Q&As (called “Iwata Asks”) and appearances such as the latter-day Nintendo Direct video series, in which he spoke directly to the millions of video gamers spanning several generations who loved his company’s games.

R.I.P Mr. Iwata, you will be greatly missed by fans around the world. We know we miss you already. All we can do now? Is let you take your final bow.

Iwata_Bowing

We have reached out to Nintendo for a full statement regarding his passing and the future of Nintendo. We’ll keep you updated.

A Two Year Reflection of B.A.T.G.R. by Dustin Murphy

Hello,

Before I begin let us consider this a letter first and foremost. Two years ago Blast Away the Game Review started out as a mere Facebook Page, one that slowly reached 2-3 thousand reviews within its first year, but with some struggle, and even hardship, but also money none of the writers had to spend for us to get the views so we did it anyway. Unlike most places I don’t find myself on things like LinkedIn or even other places to find myself wherever I can be for professional purposes. Why? I guess I never got around to it, but that’s neither here nor there. It didn’t strike me till I got out of bed that Blast Away the Game Review will be a year old in less than 9 hours. In many ways it has just now begun to hit me in the chest with happiness, but in ways, resentment for what I’ve begun and what I continue to do. You may ask why that is, and it’s because being a writer is hard, it’s time consuming, you get to do a lot of unique things, write things you’d never thought would gain traction, but also the intoxicating satisfaction you get from just doing what you do.

Over the course of the past two years, it’s been surprising when I get to see the stats roll up on our Facebook, Google+, Twitter and even our website showing me how many readers that Devon, Sarah, and Myself have pulled in this year alone. Can you believe we’re averaging around 1-2k readers a month? That means this month alone, by August we will have averaged roughly 8.5k-9k readers in our second year, which is a lot when you are facing off against big names such as IGN, GameInformer, GameSpot, Yahoo! Entertainment, and others out there that are very well established, but also that there are small companies like ours popping up left and right as gaming begins to gain a lot of traction. The downside of this? For us it’s like walking on a thin layer of ice that is only covering a bed of blades for us to fall on, and that’s one Hell of a scary thought, but we do it anyways. No one started big, everyone started small, and some are like us – our bank accounts don’t benefit in anyway. We pay for almost everything we do, every convention we go to, every day we take off work and lose money from not having worked, but we do it simply because we love it, we love what we do, and we will continue to do so. The issue to some? You become absorbed in your work, self-centered, and even hard to be around because your work has become your hobby, your life, and everything you do; that’s not to say the team here and I don’t love what we do, but we do – it’s those around us that want stability, they want us to not think about games, deadlines, articles to be written, emails to be sent, the names we remember, the things we have queued into our heads so that we know exactly what’s coming up next versus what needs to be done now. But there is something darker in there, darker inside of us all as writers.

I can’t say that there isn’t a secret that we have slowed down from time to time, but there was sometimes something more sinister crawling inside of our skin. We wanted to quit, throw in the towel, send out the emails, and walk away to find a normal life outside of being writers. To become what we were before two years ago so that we can be watching our checkbook balances go up and down in a fluctuating dance to match our spending habits, but also the fact we grow tired, we grow irritable, we grow annoyed at times that we make no money doing what we love to do since there just isn’t a sponsor there to help bring in a paycheck for us, but there is something that brings us back every time; You. You have become one of the most important factors in why we do what we do. Not just you the reader, but you the companies we work with, the developers we have, and still have yet to meet. The games, hardware, accessories, and the individuals behind them that we want to show that their hard work has been well earned because of. The men, women, and families of those men and women that have sacrificed their time away from those individuals so that we as a community and an industry can have what we want or what we need in order to keep growing in this age of technology.

Most importantly there are a few things that need to be said before I continue on with what can be considered a rant. There are thank yous that need to be served out, while many may or may not see it, they are there, they deserve it. I can’t say my parents, my brothers, or even my closest of friends didn’t play and don’t play a huge role into this, but I have to thank someone special for their speech; Cecil Paul Metcalf. Much like an uncle to me, he gave me the encouragement, wisdom, and pep-talk I needed in order to start Blast Away the Game Review; he gave me the final nudge I needed to start chasing my dreams instead of just letting them sit there and wither away. I also want to thank our former co-founder Jesse Olvera, former founding member, Josh Turner, Aaron Johnson, Jonny Walker Red, Angie Morrison, Casey Neal Todd, Shannon Cusick, Kennard Daniel Prim, Chris Barsoum, Devon Day, and Sarah Gibson.

But I want to give one very big special thank you to someone who has been there for me to keep me motivated, trying, and more goal driven than ever in the recent months; my dad, David Murphy. Had it not been for his patience, understanding, and curiosity about gaming we wouldn’t find ourselves where we are now. Where we can go from here; the sky’s the limit.

But even with all the hard-work I put in, the website, our work, our partnerships that allow us to review games also deserve a huge thank you so I want to recognize the following companies that are helping us shape our future and continue to do so everyday. I want to thank Nintendo of America, Ubisoft, Spellbind Studios, Final Boss Entertainment, OnePR Studio, Capcom, Comcept USA, Atlus, Inc., NIS America, Mr. Tired Media, Bandai Namco, Sega and the many other and wonderful companies we have worked with and will continue to work with in the future. I also want to give a major thank you to Bethesda Zenimax, XSeed Games, Koei Tecmo, and OnePR Studios for helping us get started as our first press contacts ever. Because of you, we wouldn’t have started off as we did, and we owe you a major handshake for that. Again, thank you, and we look forward to our future works with you.

With the thank yous in order, I want to discuss what the future of Blast Away the Game Review may look like in the upcoming weeks and even months ahead.

As many of you know, we are unpaid, which in ways sucks for us, but it gives us an insight that many don’t have. In the upcoming months, we’ll be working on a new design for our logo, which means we also might look at branding T-Shirts, Hoodies, or even patches once the time comes around for it. We also look at doing more giveaways based upon reader interaction, commentary, and the likes when it comes to our Facebook page, Google+, Twitter, and even our website as this helps us get an idea of what you – our reader wants, which means we have a chance to possibly partner with the companies we work with to do a few unique giveaways. The idea of a PS4 + a game in the future sound lovely? Your help is what can make this possibility, a reality, and one that we look forward to doing in the future. However, we will cont

But in the words of my friend Stu Hrovarth of Unwinabble, “I’ll keep walking with you, as long as you want the company.”

If you want to wish us a happy birthday as a company? Feel free to contact us through our Contact Us here on our website!

Pros:
+Cheeky, but amusing humor that carries on even to character names
+Solid change of turn based game mechanics
+DLC does not in anyway deter the game, but instead adds to it free of charge
+Even with a rebuilt story, the games remain true to the core, and fun as ever

Cons:
Some bosses can be truly troubling to combat against
Missions can feel like a heavy grind
Suffers from an inability to let you change up your party at the start

Lets just say that this series has been a flagship series for the PlayStation Vita at this point, which for Idea Factory and Compile Hearts? This is a rather good thing, which gives the main series, and even the spin-offs a chance to thrive, and even gain new friends. For fans of the series, this third reimagining of the franchise – namely Hyperdimension Neptunia: Victory (PS3) – fans once more get to take on the task of following Neptune, Noire, Blanc, Vert, their friends, and even their sisters story that is filled with video game references and the group’s mind blowing shenanigans. This time? Neptune has fallen victim of being transported to another dimension, and has now been tasked with helping her new friends in this dimension in order to get a chance to return home to her own. Thanks to having fallen victim to a brewing war between CPUs and the Seven Sages, Neptune once more finds herself trying to right the wrongs, bring up shares, and return home. The irony of this game is the humour itself where the CPU’s are fully aware that they are video game characters, that they are amidst a console war (namely 7th generation of consoles), but also the fact that the characters are not scared to break the fourth wall in order to bring out a few good laughs for fans. But like the spinoff titles, V Generation does not take itself too serious, but it does manage to keep the series fresh, and enjoyable to fans who are new and old as they continue on with this flagship franchise for the PlayStation Vita.

Much like the predecessors to the series, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 3: V Generation seeks to do several things as the others did when they were brought over to the Vita. This time around we are seeing some minor upgrades outside of added video clips, dialogue, and even a few alterations to how the game itself plays. This time around players will want to take their time in order to stay two to three steps ahead of the enemy, this means plotting out attacks, making sure they have set up their armour, weapons, and even small pieces of secondary equipment that will help assist them in fights in the long run. Much like before we do get to see a few significant changes that include a dungeon remake system, Stella’s (am I the only one that thought of Stella Glow when reading that name?) Dungeon where you can get better armour, weapons, and upgrades, but also a new take on the former combat system. This means that itemization and min-maxing as some will call it, is extremely important and will drive fans into figuring out what items and stats are best depending on what enemies are being encountered within that zone. Just like all the combat schemes from earlier entries, fans will able to once more take the characters into their CPU form and wreck having while building up enough ‘points’ or rather SP to unleash a devastating EXE attack or even an insanely powerful combo finisher that’ll send enemies into oblivion if you are dishing out enough damage. This means the same can be done to your characters, however, and will unfortunately punish newcomers who aren’t paying attention to what is going on.

When stepping away from the thirty hour game that fans will know, newcomers may find themselves a bit confused when approaching this one as their first title. For those who are new, let’s step back before continue on and explain the game for newcomers. Hyperdimension Neptunia as a series is one that can easily be compared to the likes of titles such as a “Tales of” title and even a traditional RPG such as Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360), which will push fans into moving characters around, attacking enemies by dipping into the games menu, and even surfing the menus quite a bit in order to prepare for combat and learning about what items do what as well as what items perform what functions in combat or out of combat even. The one major issue of this game, it is deceptively hard, challenging, and will require newcomers to spend money carefully, but also returning to repeatable quests in order to gain new items as well as in-game money.

Unlike in previous titles, V Generation has taken away the healing when leaving a dungeon, which to some is a low blow, but to others it is a refreshing challenge that increases the games overall difficulty and will push both newcomers and veterans alike into maximizing their items and utilizing characters as they need to be later in the game. However, one thing has made a return from Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 2: Sisters Generation, and that is the Stella’s Dungeon, which has become a fan favorite feature in the core series itself. In this mode, fans send Stella and her companion Felis into a dungeon in a rogue-like dungeon RPG style mode, where fans will be gathering items, equipment, blueprints, as well as items, upgradables, experience for Stella and Felis themselves. This means that players will find themselves grinding out and proceeding carefully, if they don’t, this means trouble. Especially when having to deal with trying to continue on and determining whether having to dig deeper in the dungeon or not. The important part? Stella’s Dungeon is needed in order to 100% the game, which means post-game content will be locked without getting the games “True Ending”. To some, this seems to be unfair, and will only bring in the hardcore of the hardcore to complete the game in order to go on.

Hyperdimension_Nep_RB3_BattleSC04

Like before, the game focuses with three endings depending on completion rates, this means a Good, Bad, and True ending where fans will aim to complete the game with the highest completion rate possible. Like previous titles, the game does not feature a bunch of things to do post-game, which means it’ll be shelved and possibly revisited at a later date unless you’ve grabbed the DLC that allows for characters to go up to level 300, and continue on with the games challenge mode, which unfortunately, we’ve not tinkered with yet, but we possibly will at a later date depending on if it’s something notable or not. Outside of these few drawbacks, the game does suffer from the inability to be kind, but overall? It’s a fun and enjoyable title that will lure fans in who have a PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV in order to have a good time depending on their patience level and their ability to keep focused to their screens long enough to complete the game. With that being said? Hyperdimension Neptunia as a franchise is one that is unique, fun, and hilarious all together, but to some, it’s just a horrible franchise all together, but to us? It is one we can’t wait to see what Idea Factory does with in the future thanks to the PlayStation Vita crowd keeping it alive.
