Hands-On Impression: Star Wars Battlefront – Battlefield in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star_Wars_Battlefront_SC01

In a galaxy, not so very far away, we’ve been sitting down on PC’s, PlayStation 4s, and Xbox Ones holding our controllers in our hands, and blasting each other across the battlefields of Hoth and Tatooine. On these planets we’ve discovered just how close to real that D.I.C.E. and EA have made this game. With sound effects blasting from T.V.s, headphones, and even surround sound systems in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 7.1, Star Wars Battlefront has finally landed a beta on all the mentioned platforms. We’ve taken to flying Tie Fighters, Tie/IN Interceptors, X-Wings, A-Wings, AT-ST’s, and even manning the guns to the gorgeously as well as terrifyingly large AT-AT. But much has and has not changed since the days of Battlefront 2 where fans were fighting of both droids, clone troopers, and even Jedi heroes.

What’s most iconic about this game isn’t the fact it’s a minor departure from a series we grew up to love, but rather the fact EA has decided to take what them and DICE have perfected with Battlefield and mold it into the Star Wars universe in order to give us one of the most graphically astounding games to date. I don’t say that with a grin on my face to upset the fanboys or to bring myself to the culling due to my stance on the game, but even with games such as Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes/TPP, and even Killing Floor 2 sitting around; I have to state openly that Battlefront is one of the best looking games I’ve honestly played to date even in its Beta test, which seems to be a stress test for the servers. In doing so they invited us to try out three modes such as Drop Zone where you will capture escape pods for your team by holding them for a set amount of time, Walker Assault, which many will feel is a perfect representation of Battlefield’s Rush mode, and last, but not least the games weakest mode (at least to me) Survival, which can be played with a group of friends or solo in order to hone in your skills.

Star Wars Battlefront – PlayStation 4 (Version Tested), Xbox One, and PC
Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC
Publisher: EA
Developer: DICE
Release Date: November 17th, 2015

But why did we find Survival so weak when that is supposed to be one of the strong suits of the game? Well the truth is that it felt underwhelming and poorly executed. When being shot at by Storm Troopers who felt like they were straight out of the movies you’ll find yourself cringing just a bit. When playing with the enemy shooting blasters at your team that should be hitting and not? It was almost as if the game was purposely programmed to give that movie authenticity, which lead us to quickly departing from this horde-like mode, which is all about surviving for an allotted amount of waves until an AT-ST pops up and decides to blast away at everyone.

This lead us to switching over to the multiplayer where we were introduced to the game mode Drop Zone, which places us in an undisclosed location on Tatooine. While this mode may seem familiar to others the mode is very much an attack and defend mode where players will be fighting over Escape Pods and even power-ups that will allow them to make it a bit harder for the opposing team to slow them down. While this mode did prove a bit more challenging than I had hoped for it was equally enjoyable when played with friends.

When grouped with friends any of the modes tend to be fun, but as we all know, there are challenges that came come up at any time. Where the game seems to shine the brightest in both graphical prowess and even player stability is the games largest mode called Walker Assault. This mode can easily be referred to as Battlefronts version of “Rush” from DICE’s other franchise known as Battlefield. In the Walker Assault mode we were pitted in the battle for Hoth where the Rebel Alliance is attempting to fight back the Imperial march on their home base for hoth. Here we see the Rebel’s taking action against the might of the Imperial forces on both ground and even air assault. In much of my time with this mode I spent a fair amount of time testing out the games aerial combat, vehicular combat on ground, and as a foot soldier utilizing my blasters, grenades, jetpack, my personal shield perk, and even the turrets that were pre-placed on the map. The goal as a Rebel? Fight back Imperial soldiers while trying to capture two Communication Relays in order for your team to call in Y-Wings to bring down the shields protecting the AT-AT’s. While doing so the game mode isn’t just chaotic, it’s a warzone – quite literally a Star Wars battlefield where implosion grenades, ion grenades, turret fire, rockets, cannon fire, and the likes are always going off.

Star_Wars_Battlefront_SC06

During my time it wasn’t uncommon to be blasted by squads of Stormtroopers that were spawning on one another in order to keep their partner system available (this is very reminiscent to Battlefields spawning system with the Uplink devices that soldiers would place). After having spent my fair share of time being blown up, respawned, shot by snipers, and even doing my fair share of the same, it was time to take to vehicular combat. First up was my run with the X-Wing. Much like in the movies the Tie Fighter is an excellent airship at maneuverability, firepower, and even aerial support. Unlike past Battlefront titles I didn’t get to just run up to an available vehicle and grab it – I had to hunt it down. After spending a matter of seconds jet packing around the map I was able to find my power up lying beside a blown up X-Wing that was all, but destroyed. Hitting my L1+R1 together my character knelt down, called for X-Wing support, and I was on my way into the battlefield as a member of the Rebel Alliances “Crimson Squad”. As I adjusted to the controls they came rather easy to learn having spent a lot of time piloting planes in Battlefield 4. Much like any title I found my left thumbstick for rotation to rotate side to side, front and back for speeding up and speeding down, and the right thumbstick for pitch and yaw. My D-Pad buttons offered evasive maneuvers for when under enemy fire, which most of the time was used to break missile lock. L1 was to activate shields while R1 was to launch a torpedo. In the game I commonly found myself holding onto L2 in order to lock onto enemy aggressors in the air only to start shooting at them while pursuing them. Much like ground weapons, vehicle weapons of all sorts overheat and must cool down if they are constantly fired.

On both ends of the stick each vehicle felt unique from the evasive TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor clear down to the Rebels A-Wing and the T-47 Snowspeeder/Airspeeder. The most interesting part of vehicles was not piloting them, but even combating against them as they proved both lethal and at times quite clumsy when taking fire from the ground. Though the primary thing to take away from the battlefield of Hoth? The graphical prowess as well as scope of audio is immersive. Thanks to the use of sound effects straight from the movies such as the mechanical clumsiness of the AT-ST’s, the breach alarms of the AT-AT, the whine of the TIE Fighters flying sounds to the sound of their cannons, the game is overall very unique to how true it has stayed to the Star Wars franchise. To be quite honest? It feels as if DICE has spent hours on end sitting at the Lucas Studios in order to make the game true to the franchise. The musical score itself is quite impressive as it quietly plays behind the scenes during combat scenarios while more prominent songs strike a chord when something large scale occurs. While this is something that will strike a bit of nostalgia for some, the game stays true to what Star Wars is known for such as design, realism, graphical prowess, and its story telling elements. Thanks to DICE this has been fully possible within Star Wars Battlefront with a Beta test that could quite easily be called a success after downloading an 8GB file (rounded up from 7.8GB or so). The truth? If this game follows through like the beta did? Star Wars Battlefront could easily set itself up for a game of the year.

Star_Wars_Battlefront_SC04

Though as much as I would love to continue with the stroking of egos there were some underlying issues that would make developers cringe. One of these is trouble with partying up with friends. While the use of what felt like an Origin launcher within the menu’s, I found it almost troublesome to group up with friends as the game constantly reported that I had no friends online on Saturday and Sunday night for PlayStation 4. To ensure it wasn’t just me? We took our PS4 to multiple locales (friends who allowed us to invade their internet) in order to test this. To be honest? It was the servers quite possibly, but regardless it had been admitted by EA and DICE that they were stress testing the servers, which quite easily could have cause this issue. Another is minor audio cut-in and outs when navigating menus between matches. This having occurred on both of the B.A.T.G.R. PS4’s using our 100+ MBPS downstream internet with a 15.8 MBPS upstream. Another underlying issue isn’t just these small flaws, but instead there were a few that had been noted on the P.C. side by B.A.T.G.R. writer Ms. Helseth who noted that people had already been cheating to the point that one player in a lobby she had attended sat at 256 kills with 8 Deaths. Something that pales my 78 kills and 32 deaths in comparison. While this is an issue it only brings the question to whether or not Battlefront on P.C. will have an anti-cheat system in place to keep such things from happening.

We can only wait and see when Battlefront launches on November 17th, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One for $59.99 USD. Recently new modes and a season pass have been announced.

Star Wars Battlefront Gets New Modes an Ultimate Edition and Season Pass

droid_Run_sc01

If you’re like the millions of other players who have been cramming 60+ hours in since the beta launched, you’re no doubt extremely excited for the game, and a bit curious to what is to come out of it. Today on the official Battlefront Blog, DICE and EA announced several things including three new game modes, a season pass, an Ultimate Edition as well as the fact the Beta will end tomorrow October 13th, which gives you an entire day more to play if you haven’t been already.

In the announcement, EA announced that there are several modes that haven’t been announced till today and both of them honestly sound quite enjoyable. First up is the newest mode called “Droid Hunt”, which will pit teams of players against each other as they attempt to capture the GNK droids (those trash can things) and bring them back to safety in order to gain points. Simple right? Not necessarily since there are multiple droids scattered across these smaller maps for players to hunt down. This mode will be playable on all 4 planets at launch and Jakku when it launches in December for those who pre-order the game.

Next up is the game mode called Cargo. This mode is Battlefronts equivalent of Capture the Flag where teams will work together to capture “flags” in order to win. The upside? This mode will not require your “flag” to be at your base in order for you to win. Scoring works in points of ten for a team with five total. Scoring starts with each team having five points. Scoring will increase your count while also lowering down the opposing teams points for teams to win. Matches will last 15 minutes and only will end if you run out of time or when a singular team manages to deduct points completely from the other team.

The last mode is basically a “Tag” game mode where a player will spawn as one of the franchises iconic heroes (Boba Fett is in there, right?). As players play they will work together and against each other in order to eliminate the hero and allowing the player who killed the hero to take that players spot as the hero character, which allows the cycle to begin again. The assumption? The hero character earns points by wiping out those whom are chasing them down and eliminating them.

Lastly, the Ultimate Edition will include the season pass, which will include all future content containing new planets, new modes, and we are assuming probably new characters as well as customization. The Ultimate Edition will include all the content from the Deluxe Edition, but also the games season pass, which can be purchased separately from this edition for a price that has yet to be announced by EA. We are sure the Season Pass will run you between $35-$50 USD, which isn’t all that uncommon these days. Let alone does this edition include the season pass, it also includes a unique “Shoot First” emote that can only be obtained by those that purchase this edition.

Star Wars Battlefront is set to release on Nov. 17th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $59.99 USD for the base game. Stay tuned for our hands-on impression of the beta as well as our thoughts on the creative direction at this point.

Lillith Ltd Cancels Allison Road Kickstater, Partners with Studio Behind Worms

allison_road_hallway_lily

If you’re like me, you’ve been watching Allison Road quite closely. It’s the game that could truly set itself up to be the successor to Konami’s canceled project Silent Hills, which made their demo “P.T.” one of the worlds most mentioned, favored, and most in-demand game to date.

With this partnership, Allison Road’s developer; Lillith Studios; announces that they will now be able to become 100% committed to their title, but also gives their team a chance to work with all their attention dedicated to their game. With this announcement we’ve also come to find out that many of the Kickstarter backer rewards are being worked on in the background as can be read below from their official Kickstarter note.

allison_road_kitchen_chair

“Working with Team17 will give us the chance to make our game unhindered creatively, but at the same time will give us the resources, support and experience that only a 25 year old studio can give.

For all of you that have pledged already for in game rewards, we absolutely promise you that we will look at ways outside of Kickstarter that will allow you to be involved in the game at a later date.”

For the full breakdown you can visit the Kickstarter Page on what’s going on.

Review: Amnesia: Memories – Remembering Life as it Were

 Amnesia_US_Logo

Pros:
+Characters are quite amusing, especially Orion who serves as the “Narrator”.
+Well scripted conversations as well as storytelling.
+Visuals are quite easy on the eyes and well done only to be followed admirably by the music

Cons:
Some character choices for the player are a bit of a let down.
A few of the characters feel somewhat underdeveloped

amnesia_memories_SC05

While I’d love to say I’ve played my fair share of visual novel games that are driven as a “dating simulation” I was recently introduced to my first Otome (“girl game” is what it literally translates to), I was introduced to a niche genre I’ve only heard of and now find myself enjoying. As my first one I was introduced to “Amnesia: Memories” by Idea Factory. To be honest? This is my first dating sim since I’ve decided to skimp out on the idea of trying out the world renowned “Hatoful Boyfriend” and move onto this one for this sponsored review. So you may ask me to explain this game in a single sentence and to be honest the response you’d get is as follows. “Amnesia: Memories” is a rollercoaster of a ride that plays itself upon doubt, a crime possibly committed, and a use of weirdly feminine males that are meant to capture a woman’s eyes without making them feel overwhelmed, which to some this game may do in an explicative manner. For me? I was left scratching my head due to how many ways my character “Rose” had lost her memory due to the person she had spoken with or relations with for that matter.

Much like any dating sim game I’ve ever read about, “Amnesia: Memories” follows the practice quite well as your character is introduced to a decent selection of people – in this case it’s men – to choose from. Each of these potential partners has a set of likes, dislikes, and even dialogue choices to choose from in order to show your characters true passions as you lock in on one of the suitors that seem best fit for your character. Like many titles, this game comes with a ‘tried-and-true’ formula where your characters end results with one person may sometime suffer due to the choices made. Something I’ve yet seen in any of the titles I’ve watched played or even streamed by other gamers.

Our story starts off with our character awakening in their mind only to be introduced to the games narrator Orion. Orion is a rather quirky spirit who has somehow managed to enter my character “Roses” consciousness where he had caused her to lose all of her memories. As someone who would have surely had a platinum trophy if there were trophies for this game, I managed to spend a lot of time finding that Orion would spend quite a bit of time as the character who would give me a lot of my preliminary dialogue choices. These choices included which guy my character would like to start with in order to start rebuilding her memories. This included going through the game backwards at times in order to discover who she is, who her suitor is, and why they fell in love to begin with. The first time around for myself as a guy was a bit awkward, I felt myself scratching my head a few times before going along with the game only to remember it was once more a visual novel and my rapidly pressing of “X” would “turn the pages” faster and faster as I read through the game before the rather well done dialogue could finish. With the creativity behind each of the suitors, the game offers a rather creative premise based upon who your starting bachelor is. Depending on you choose, as stated, also involves the resolution of how your character became an amnesiac. Well for me it would’ve been nice to have to have had the choice of no one and just had Orion be some clumsy ass sprite who just managed to ram into my character’s consciousness by some weird chance. Unfortunately the game did not offer that and would lead me on towards a possible crime that had been committed, if it had been committed to begin with.

amnesia_memories_SC02

For myself much of my story took place with a gentleman by the name of Ikki who looks just short of being a man in drag due to his effeminate features. As my story progressed with Ikki I quickly took notice between several things based upon each of the “realms” that could be played. There was little variation between each of the stories aside from a few nuances that would make you scratch your head when it comes to the design choices. Outside of this the game tends to try and stay bright, energetic, and even offering a few warmingly tender moments that will attempt to melt your heart during the dating scenes. The downside? I’m the one that’s twistedly dark and would’ve loved to have seen the option to wreck a date or three only to see the alternate ending if there had been one that ended with “Rose” walking off with a smile on her face and her head held high; granted I didn’t see a connection with her or any of the suitors even though you end up with either one in the end no matter how many times you’ve played the game through.

While the game tends to hit a rather cheerful note each time through, it’ll be hard to say that it does much else outside of that. With such a colourful cast of characters it was quite dumbfounding to see that there weren’t deeper backstories behind each character, yourself, and even more fleshed-out personalities that would drive the game more-so than they did before. While “Amnesia: Memories” does just what is expected of an Otome, it’s hard to see that I was overall impressed outside of the art, the dialogue, and the music. The music for-one is what kept me coming back as I loved the little episodic queues between days or even occurrences within that day. Had they made a physical release with a soundtrack bundle? I’d promise you I’d have bought it just for the soundtrack with extended cuts of each of the mini-segment songs. The biggest problem with this games launch is not the fact it’s a bad game at all, but for those that don’t have some idea of Japanese or at least experience with it? Will find the game a bit text-heavy and unfortunately that will yank you away from the title, but don’t let it be deceptive, the game to some will be quite enjoyable for what it is.

amnesia_memories_SC04

Now I know many of you are wondering just how bad the bad endings can be. This is where the weirdo in me comes out and finds the bad-endings rather hilarious since it seems to be the most commonly used one in reviews and the best for the example shows a serial killer coming out and stabbing my dearest “Rose” to death in a rather ironic love-driven rage. While this was interesting it was odd that this character was introduced very shortly before the occurrence and even shows off no reason as to rhyme or reason that drove him to the murder of “Rose”. While it was odd, it was hilarious as to why such a thing happened, and even made the weirdest part of the game one of the most dumbfounding, but even this doesn’t beat the fact that the final bachelor is just downright creepy as Hell. Even more-so than that pigeon dating sim that seems to be all the rage. While the game’s overall plot is weird, “Amnesia: Memories” stays on task with bringing forth both enjoyable plotlines and ones that are so bad that the title tends to fall flat on its face more than once. To some? This is a perfect example of why games should intertwine their scripts a bit better and offer more diversity in why things occur as they do.

Amnesia: Memories – Vita [Reviewed]
Developer: Idea Factory, Inc.
Publisher: Idea Factory, Inc.
Price: 29.99 USD
Released: Available Now

While I’m one that doesn’t enjoy dating sims, “Amnesia: Memories” is a game with a beautifully light tone, warm moments, and amazingly well done artistic uses in the eye candy area. While its visually appealing, the game is also a bit goofy in a mindless sense that kept me coming back for a bit more, which is something Idea Factory Inc. seems to be quite good at. While I would love to have seen more about the cast behind the scenes, the games story is quite predictable and unfortunately quite unaccomplished in comparison to some of their other titles, which to some may make this game feel as if it was made by uneducated children. This is where the genius creation behind this game comes to play and makes it even more appealing for those wanting something that doesn’t want to be taken seriously. So go at it, let Orion take your consciousness away and go for a little ride with this games cast if you want to try out your first Otome.

Sony Reduces PlayStation 4 Costs Effective Tomorrow, Includes Bundles

PS4_Price_Drop

There’s always something nice about when the holidays roll around. This time it’s that Sony has announced that they are dropping the price of the Sony PlayStation 4 this holiday season. So for those of you that have a PlayStation 4 on your holiday wish list? That’s a great bit of news as you can see above. Sony is dropping the price of the console by $50 USD in order to compete with the Microsoft Xbox One, which has been sitting comfortable at the $349.99 USD price point where the Xbox One has found a comfortable price point as of recent.

The question that will lay underneath the surface? Is this permanent or will this be a temporary ordeal just for the holidays? All we can do is sit and wait in order to see how far this goes for both bundles and non-bundles.

Eidos and Square Enix Cancel the Augment Your Pre-Order for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

DXMD-still-logo

If you’re one of those that had happily pre-ordered your copy of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided from the “Augment Your Pre-Order” setup? The bad news is headed right your way as Eidos has officially shut down the pre-order program and thus made the game globally available for everyone on February 23rd, 2016.

The official statement can be read below as fans will all be compensated for the changes in their pre-order status:

“We really understand and appreciate the passion for Deus Ex that the fans have shown here,” said David Anfossi, Studio Head at Eidos-Montréal. “Know that all of us, both at Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal, share that passion for this franchise.”

A vast majority of the negative feedback received arose from the tiers, and the requirement of specific pre-order numbers to unlock them. Therefore, taking into account the feedback from fans, the pre-order tiers have been removed, and all of the associated content with the program will now be made available for free to anyone who pre-orders or purchases a Day 1 edition of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Additionally, the release date will no longer be changed in accordance to pre-order numbers, and everyone will gain access to the game on February 23, 2016.

Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal sincerely thank the community for the love and dedication they have shown for the Deus Ex franchise.”

If you haven’t already know, Magic the Gathering has received a new expansion set known as “Battle for Zendikar”, which invites more than 20 million Magic: The Gathering players to once more setup and prepare to build their new decks as they return to the fan favored plane of Zenidkar. In this set players will once more see the return of teams that are filled with elves, vampires, and even humans as their ranks struggle against the Alien threat only known as the Eldrazi.

This expansion welcomes back some of Magic’s most iconic hero Planeswalkers, Zendikari people, and even the lands themselves as they seek to battle off the invasive enemy forces. As players seek to build their forces with these cards, Wizards of the Coast has announced that certain packs of the Battle for Zendikar set will now include very rare versions of some of Magic’s most well-known cards. Called the Zenikdar Expeditions, these cards will feature beautiful foil art of Zendikari landscapes.
