Guardians of the Rose Heads to Kickstarter

If you’ve ever wanted to go on a tale of adventure with companions and an attempt to stop the great witches to free a kingdom, this game is your choice for the taking. As a member of the Royal Guard, a freshly inducted member that is, you are part of the magic keepers of the king. As you begin, you’ll discover corruption within the Royal Guard as the witches have now tainted them to their needs. As you begin your adventure, your chance is to attempt to overthrow the witches curse that has enslaved the kingdom while taking on giants, river spirits, dragons and more.

guardians_of_the_Rose3

For those wondering about the play style, the game is one that is open-ended in its adventure, one that allows players to explore whatever direction they wish and even choosing the progress to the storyline at, which they prefer. Luckily quests aren’t to feel like errand boy quests, but instead offer players a feel of accomplishment once completed. As players get their story underway, the choice is theirs between good, bad, and evil to influence a players ending. Driven like any, the game takes the familiar turn of graphical prowess and gameplay mechanics of titles like The Legend of Zelda, Gauntlet, and elements from the famed The Elder Scrolls Franchise.

Along with the inspiration from classic books and stories the games style was inspired by old school Arcade games that I would play as a kid at Pizza Hut and the local bowling Alley.

This game will be available on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One with the possibility of others.

Deus Ex’s Augments May be Here Sooner than You Think

dxmd_leg_augmentation

Imagine a world not far from our own where losing an eye, a leg, a hand, your arm, heart, or even a lung was replaceable. Imagine a world where you weren’t limited to the defects of humanity with being born with a limb that wouldn’t work or a part of your leg that has been overly damaged. Imagine a world where the impossible is now possible. Welcome to Deus Ex, a franchise that has taken the idea of humanities limitations and moved past with factual science that has begun making itself reality. It’s become a world of endless possibilities in a franchise that has made us wonder where human augmentations would go with artificial limbs, eyes, enhanced ears, and the likes. That world is a place where once career-ending limitations became a thing of the past and allowed for humans to regain control of what once seemed over.

A few years ago, I began to watch and study the world of prosthetic limbs and human enhancement. Not because I or anyone I know are disabled in such means, but because the science behind it made me curious. It made me curious to what would happen if we began to break the boundaries between man and machine only to merge into a world where humans would transcend being handicapped or disabled. After playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I began to question the possibilities of a future that could truly become reality, and to my amazement? That future isn’t far off.

When I talk biomedical implants or even something similar, you probably are thinking things such as artificial teeth, metal rods in legs, arms or back, but what if I’m talking mechanically engineered?

The Blind Can See Again

As someone who has always had eyesight problems. I found myself often questioning, “What would happen if I went blind?”; the answer? Now it seems not to far away thanks to scientific advances in human implants as well as artificial eyes. Back in July of 2015, I stumbled upon a BBC article written by medical correspondent Fergus Walsh that discussed retinal implants that allow 80 year old Ray Flynn to see again. Ray Flynn suffers from a disorder called Dry AMD, or age related macular degeneration. A disorder that affects at least half a million people a year just in the U.S. alone. Close to the same in the United Kingdom it comes out. The minds behind this device? A team known as Second Sight with their device known as The Argus II Bionic Eye Implant.

Ray_Flynn.jpg

Ray Flynn with his Argus II. Photo Copyrights – The Guardian.

This implant has allowed Mr. Flynn to once more begin seeing the things he love’s such as futbol, the television set, and even his computer screen again. Let alone can he see those, Mr. Flynn is also capable of making out his family again.

argus2_press_photo.jpg

So how exactly does this augmented implant work? The bionic eye implant is first put into the eye, where a surgical procedure is done. It is then hooked up to the small electrodes around the retinal, which allows the cells to carry the visual information to the brain. From there the brain is able to process the electrical impulses while the device transmits the data being sent to the brain to his eyes from the glasses camera.

argus-ii.jpg

Doing this allows for the retina’s remaining cells to function to the best of their ability. This can be imagined as almost like seeing a computer screen’s vertical and horizontal as well as diagonal lines. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean at this time that eyes will fully be replaced by bionics, but gives us the idea that there’s a lot more in the works, and may just give us a fighting chance against pure blindness. Now we just play the waiting games for augments like Adam Jensen’s where we can have glasses or visual receptors near our face without needing glasses or sunglasses at all times.

Prosthetic Limbs That Work Like Real Limbs

For many of us, the thought of losing an arm, a leg, a finger, a part of our foot, all of it is terrifying, and for some? It’s a reality. After sitting down on YouTube the same night I read about Mr. Flynn, my mind began to wonder about realistic prosthesis and what the future could hold. For example, what if I was injured in a crash, how would I write, how would I play games, how would I hold a child if I had one? To YouTube I went and stumbled upon various advances in prosthesis. There I stumbled upon a video that had my interest. Here I watched a man by the name of Hugh Herr – if you don’t know about this man, he’s MIT Media Lab’s Biomechatronics head honcho. Meaning? He’s the badass behind the prosthetic limbs.

dr_hugh_herr

Photo Courtesy of Sports Illustrated/Getty Images

Hugh Herr, for a bit of background, is a double amputee. He lost both of his legs in a climbing accident that left him bed bound for years. In his speech it was hard not to find myself interested as he began to discuss the teams advancement in limb replacement. Granted the limbs come off at the end of the day, these limbs allow him to walk as you and I do, get around as you and I do, and even do the things he loves such as running, walking, climbing, and even jogging.

This is thanks to the 48 year old doctor’s want for new and impossible prosthetics to replace the old conventional ones that come with hindering limitations. On his designs, Dr. Herr has designed a beyond complex board system that allows for a onboard system to work with microprocessors, environmental sensors, control loops. springs, struts, and muscle as well as tendon like motors. What does this mean? Almost realistic body parts, but in a prosthetic. His prosthetic title? BiOMs. That means these legs will automatically adjust reflexively as they move with the patients strides, the slopes in their terrain, but they also recycle energy as if they were our own flesh, blood and bone.

Thanks to his advancements in this technology, we can only wonder when his team of scientists will replace legs, arms, and even other body parts with functional augmented parts that don’t have to be removed, and will forever seem as if they were the real limb they replaced. You can watch his Ted Talk fascinating as well as captivating speech here.

BioChips

As one could imagine, it’s not hard to see a world where things such as BioChips exist (External Link to Fox News), because they already do. These chips allow for people to hold their personal information on a single RFID, allowing them to unlock their houses, send faxes, unlock cars, pay with the swipe of their hand, and be on with their lives. These chips also have personal information such as GPS location and the likes on them so that they can also find missing children, Alzheimers patients, and even identify a missing persons.

While those certainly do have their possible uses, what about more daily uses such as opening your house with the swipe of a hand, loading your grocery list to the chip via NFC from your computer so it could be loaded to your phone or a AR set of glasses? What about paying your bills by simply swiping your hand over an app or going to an ATM and simply moving your hand with the chip over the device that will activate it? While it all seems scary, this future is already happening in many places and has become useful for those using those devices. Several have already shown that their lives have become easier, more stress free since having been chipped. While privacy concerns are still there, it seems the route is quote possible and even useful for those intending on using the technology.

The Deus Ex Future Isn’t Far

While many of us have seen the trailers, the shorts, and even the effects of what can happen through augmentation. It’s hard not to imagine a world where we aren’t quite human anymore, but have surpassed many limitations through the use of technology. While the idea of having a chip inside my hand isn’t ideal, it’s an idea that may not be too far off with the way cellphones, necklaces, wristbands, and the likes are now becoming wearable technology.

dxmd-still-2

While the future for true merger between man and machine is far from being perfected, it’s interesting to see where it will go, when it will become to fruition in an easily accessible and when we will fully be able to utilize some of the technologies seen within the franchise. While I don’t expect to see people smashing through walls with artificial limbs, I do hope to see people returning to normal and functioning lives through technology.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is set to launch on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One August 23rd, 2016.

Tripwire Makes Killing Floor 2 Global Publishing Deal for PS4 with Deep Silver and Iceberg Games

Killing Floor 2 as you know has already been a huge game for both David and I. We’ve put quite a bit of time into it blowing up zombies, beating them to a bloody visceral mess, and even stacking their corpses for a bonfire on PC. You may also know I have way too many damn mods for my PC version of the game. However, that’s not a problem, and that’s because the PlayStation 4 version is officially on its way as Tripwire Interactive has signed a publishing deal with both Deep Silver (Dead Island, Saints Row) and Iceberg Games.

KF2_ReturnOfThePatriarchUpdate_006

This new deal will allow for fans to experience the outbreak caused by Horzine’s Biotech experiment’s that failed causing the collapse of the European Union as everything from government, to military forces, to communications, and eventually financial structures collapsed. In its wake, the European content has been swallowed by swarms of the undead, leaving survivors to fight for their lives in order to stop the infestation from getting worse. For those of you that haven’t experienced the title that features new perks, return of fan-favored bosses, and a replayability like non-other? Here’s your features for this upcoming title:

Visceral Gore – KILLING FLOOR 2 ramps up the gore with a proprietary, high powered persistent blood system bringing new levels of fidelity to the genre. Players will send entrails, severed limbs, and blood flying as they wade through hordes of enemies. But they need to watch out! If caught, enemies will rip them, and their entire party limb from limb

Six player co-op or solo play— A multitude of varied playable characters await for players to choose from as they enter the fray in online co-op mode or solo mode for those willing to brave the horrific specimens alone

Terrifying Zeds – New enemies and fan favorites from the original game are back with expanded and smarter artificial intelligence, dishing out powerful attacks, working as a group to weaken the player’s party and pushing the challenge level and fear factor to new levels

Unique Blend Of Weaponry – From modern militaristic assault rifles, brutal improvised makeshift weapons, classic historical guns, and off the wall “Mad Scientist” weapons, KILLING FLOOR 2 has a unique blend of killing tools that will satisfy any gamer

Expanded Perk System – Perks from the original game have been reimagined with more added to the fold. All perks now progress with meaningful talent choices that amplify different play styles, giving players a progression path that is expansive and full of rewarding milestones

Brutal Melee Combat – KILLING FLOOR 2 reinvents melee combat completely. Players now have control over the type of melee attacks they can perform, enabling them to deliver bone-breaking crippling attacks to Zeds

Brighton-based Studio PaperSeven Announces Blackwood Crossing as First Title

BlackwoodCrossing_04.jpg

If you didn’t already know, I’m one for games that have plenty of story. As you may also know, I loved a small game called Firewatch, which was a very story driven game that appealed to fans as an adventure title. While Campo Santo isn’t the one developing the new title, it’s titles such as Firewatch and now PaperSevens upcoming title Blackwood Crossing that have garnished a bit of my attention to the indie scene.

The studio has announced their first title will be launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this year. The team behind it? Is largely composed of former Disney Black Rock Studio developers, as well as writer Oliver Reid-Smith, the man behind renowned title The Room.

The title will heavily focus upon first-person exploration while taking on the task of following the relationship between characters Scarlett and Finn. Both are orphaned siblings who just happen to be growing apart as Scarlett begins to come of age and depart from her childhood. However, all changes as they end up crossing ways with a mysterious figure, which just happen to lead them upon a tail of life, love, and loss in a beautifully magical way.

“This is our first original game since forming PaperSeven and we are immensely proud to be announcing it” said Alice Guy, co-founder of PaperSeven. “There’s been some fantastic narrative adventure games coming out in recent times – we’re hoping to take a place at this table whilst offering something different to what’s come before. Blackwood Crossing is evidence of our desire to explore experiences with depth and meaning, and create characters that challenge the often clichéd gaming landscape.”

With their first release being a rather large task, it’ll be wonderful to see how the title handles the ordeals of life in their upcoming adventure title! Definitely stay tuned for our review of it.

Resident Evil 5 to Land on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Soon

Resident_Evil5HD_Sc01

If you didn’t get enough of Resident Evil 5 the first time around, it’s coming soon to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Following suit of Resident Evil 6’s re-launch in March, Capcom has continued on with re-releasing the original trio for the last generation in a continued celebration of the franchises’ 20th anniversary. As one can imagine, the franchise has been seemingly counting down in a backwards order. One can only assume, however, this is to help define something that’s coming up with a Resident Evil announcement and or a Resident Evil release next year as we’ve already seen the re-release and remastering of both Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil.

mercenaries_united

Even Resident Evil: Mercenaries United is here for the first time on consoles!

The newest release will be landing on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $20 and will feature all released content as well as co-op for those looking to get a few zombie skulls bashed in with fellow gamers. If you are looking to get the physical copy, the wait is almost over as the title will hit store shelves shortly after the digital release on July 12th, for $20. You can find out more about this release on the official Capcom Unity post.

Review: MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune vs Zombies – Out of.. School because of Zombies?

Pros:
+
The colorful cliche of the 90’s console war returns as a mostly cinematic experience
+Missions last no more than 2-to-3 minutes making the game an easy pick-up and go title.
+All previous reputation systems and cast members return
+Combat system from Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed is back and feels refined

Cons:
Cut scenes are longer than each base mission
The games real guts are hidden in the multiplayer
Extremely short campaign

SS6

School, a place, a word, and a ideal that we’ve all dreaded all our and something we celebrated leaving once our clever pieces of paper dictating the rest of our lives were handed to us. In the latest title? We get to go back to the very thing we dreaded growing up. A place where our leading ladies have set up as their debuting locale for their latest entry. Unlike past titles, this one doesn’t derive as a spin-off of the 90’s cliche of the console wars that took place between Sega, Nintendo, and Sony. Instead? It’s now an alternative dimension where the girls are in school as well as in clubs such as music, art, cinematography, and even various other entities suiting what niche they identify themselves with.

Taking a familiar turn, many of you who played Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed will find some rather noticeable similarities. The game takes a familiar turn in the approach of chapters, gameplay combat, and character selection. Not straying far from its RPG ideology and roots, MegaTagmension Blanc attempts to erect an identity of its own. In turn, this latest title puts us on the adventure of the ladies we’ve become familiar with such as Blanc, Ram, Rom, Famitsu, Neptune, Nepgear, Noire, and a few others. Unfortunately, it leaves fan favorites such as Compa and Ifi out of the fray for some weird reason.

SS5

The narrative is almost to easy to guess as the premise doesn’t change throughout the entire 3 to 4 hour campaign. The idea is simple, the girls are school, the school is about to shut down due to failing finances and interest in it, in turn Neptune has decided to make a movie to help bring profit into the school. Sound familiar? A lot like their game shares in the other titles that bring them power, but this is for a school. In her actions Neptune recruits Blanc as the writer, Ram, Rom, and the other girls as assistants as well as actors. Their idea? Make a movie about the school being invaded by zombies, which plays upon the real-world scenario of the current zombie craze that’s hitting the TV and movie industry as of the past few years. That is until their school is actually invaded and it’s up to the girls to once more get underway and save the day all the while filming their movie scenes.

Much as one would expect, each chapter plays out over the course of several scenarios, which are introduced with a bit of dialogue before the two to three minutes at most missions get underway. These segments are spread across multiple chapters, which is saddening as the games average play time for the main campaign will last only a few hours at most, which doesn’t showcase tough enemies, epic boss fights, and unimaginable odds like previous entries did. Instead? This game seems to aim at the idea of being a pick-up and go with an emphasis on the latter. Even as a Hyperdimension fan, the game is quite disappointing as the best qualities of it are hidden within the titles multiplayer. This is where the real enemies begin to shine and unfortunately, much like the campaign, combat pacing doesn’t change much nor does the need to want to quit due to boredom. While the game eventually offers harder bosses, larger enemies, and even longer mission stretches via the multiplayer, it’s not enough to keep those who hammered away at the main campaign in coming back.

SS8

While graphics remain on par for the franchise, so does the quality of the games writing, which leaves it quite enjoyable with a few good laughs from time to time. Let alone does much of the sound quality, video quality, and development quality remain intact it leaves a sincere questioning as to why the missions didn’t get the same attention in SP versus MP. In the multiplayer portion of the game players will find themselves delighted until the repetitive combat once more begins to sink in. Players will find themselves consistently smashing square, triangle, and a select few other buttons to engage in combat. They will  use up abilities, and ultimately make themselves aware of team position with their three other counterparts.

Unfortunately, if players didn’t stick with characters to level and spend time leveling their Lily Ranks, obtaining equipment, as well as preparing for the worst case scenario? They’ll find themselves getting destroyed throughout the titles multiplayer, which can be quite unforgiving.

SS3

Sadly even with bigger and meaner enemies, it doesn’t help feeling as if this game was a second thought when trying to come up with a new title. Unlike its sister titles, MegaTagmension Blanc finds itself lacking in the long run since both multiplayer and singleplayer are quite enjoyable for their combat experiences once the campaigns dialogue and humour run dry. While multiplayer itself is where the game shines, it also finds itself running dry after a few good hours and will leave players wanting to revisit titles, which is something I eventually did once completing all missions available.

While the game can certainly use some newer characters, it’s a title that attempts to do things that have already been done in an older title. While the game could have used new elements such as tower defense mechanics or even a rogue-like dungeon crawler experience, it detours and finds itself in a troubling situation that left even this fan a bit annoyed. In truth? The title feels like it should have been apart of a PlayStation 4 port of Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed with new content made readily available on it. Unfortunately, we are stuck with this title, which finds itself mostly enjoyable on the multiplayer level once the single player campaign has been mastered.

SS4

MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune vs Zombies – PlayStation Vita (Reviewed)
Developer: Compile Heart / Tamsoft
Publisher: Idea Factory
Price: $39.99 USD
Released: Available Now

While the games button mashing of square, circle, and X can be enjoyable, the enjoyability will eventually run dry and leave fans hungering for more if their thirst hasn’t been quenched for the fan service MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune vs Zombies has to offer. If it’s fan service you want? This game serves it up perfectly for its 3 to 4 hour campaign duration and as much as multiplayer replayability as one can handle. The only thing not saving this title? A scaling difficulty that should have been implemented from the games get-go when it comes to the development cycle. For hardcore fans? You’ll enjoy the title just like any other for its quirky storyline and gameplay mechanics.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Gets Live Action Trailer to Show the Divide of Aug versus Non-Aug

dxmd-still-2

Living in the year 2027 has seen breakthroughs with human augmentation with mechanical devices. Arms could be replaced, legs can be replaced, and even other parts of the body with scientific and medical breakthroughs. But, what happens if those people began to suffer extreme psychotic delusions, losing control of their own minds as well as bodies, and eventually began to attacking people? What if hundreds of thousands of people were injured? Maimed and even died from it? What if it’s someone you loved or cared for? What if it was your brother, your sister, your mother, your father, your aunt, uncle, grandparent or someone close to anyone you knew? What if society began to crumble as “Aug’s” became the new “enemy” because of fear, prejudice, and hatred for what they are?

What if society began to fall because of something out of the control of those who’ve been augmented? In the newest live action trailer from Square Enix, we get to see what happens when the highly controversial “Human Restoration Act”where “Augs” have been isolated into camps and districts away from normal humans. This cost? Would separate humanity once more as history repeats itself. Tearing friends apart, tearing families apart, and even tearing society apart as the world around them crumbles.

The newest trailer can be viewed here and will require an 18+ YouTube Account due to graphical content.

Will you have what it takes to stop Mankind from being Divided starting August 23rd, 2016 for PC, Xbox One and PS4? Prepare to return to a world like you’ve never see it before with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

As you may know we’ve been covering Vainglory quite a bit. It’s a MOBA that has been perfected to handhelds and is quite fun to take on the go. As with any update, there’s new features, but 1.18 definitely brings in a full blown swing with the massive amount of content it features. The biggest draw of it? The new hero, new skins, and the new quest chests that are featured to unlock skins, glory points, ICE (in-game real money currency), and even some boosters.

With any big update for Vainglory, we’re used to seeing a new hero and in turn we got one. This new update isn’t any different as it welcomes in the new roam hero named Lance. Lance is a powerful character who welcomes in as a tank with his polearm-and-shield play style. His ability to knock enemies away, snare them, and even role quickly into combat before blocking makes him a lethal adversary who can build crystal and utility to excel as a tank. In turn, he can also build for weapon power to bring in the pain during battle.

The update also features updated skins that will become available June 17th as Sky as she can unlock her Supersonic tier’s I and II now, with Tier 3 on the June date. In turn Tier III Celeste is coming soon with Blackfeather’s Tier I following right with it.

In addition to this update, New Quests and Chests have been added in to help with the rewarding system on Vainglory. Featuring in-game challenges on a daily/weekly basis, players can now earn new skin cards, boosters, Ice, and more by simply playing and leveling as well as being introduced to the game. More become available with players quickly fighting their way to account level 30 now. This means every level earned prior to this release? Gets its own chests even if you’ve earned those levels.

Additionally, the eSports Championship kick off for the Spring Season starts on June 3rd in Hollywood, CA, and June 10th in Berlin, Germany. For those of you interested in tuning in by checking out the action live, you can head over to both the North American Championship attendee sign-up here or the European Championship sign-up here. Fans can also tune into twitch.tv/vaingloryleague starting on those dates to see what it takes to be Vainglory Champions. Stay tuned as we plan on covering these Championships.
