DOOM Eternal has set an entirely new set of records for the franchise to become the most profitable title in the franchise as well as single most concurrent players on a single platform.
It comes as no surprise that as a follow-up to the 2016 critically-acclaimed title, DOOM, fans would be hankering for more, one that’s bigger, better, and bloodier sibling would be highly-anticipating the newly released DOOM Eternal.
Today, Bethesda Softworks and id Software, revealed that DOOM Eternal has doubled the sales figures of its 2016 sibling in launch revenue, bringing the total sales up to exceed previous expectations for the game. The sales figures, while not disclosed, have reached the point that DOOM Eternal soared well over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam in a single day.
DOOM Eternal continues to soar among critics, reaching an average of 90/89/87 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 4, respectively, as well as a 96% average on OpenCritic, being heralded as the 2020 game-of-the-year contender, with other major news outlets such as GameInformer calling it, “Bloody Brilliant, IGN calling it an “absolute blast”.
Behind it comes the first game using idTech 7, powering DOOM Eternal in ways never-before-seen with technology reviewer and leading outlet, Digital Foundry calling idTech 7 “incredible”.
“We want to thank our millions of fans for their enthusiastic support of this amazing title,” said Ron Seger, SVP of Global Sales at Bethesda Softworks. “Despite thousands of retail stores closing, we are pleased so many fans have been able to enjoy DOOM Eternal.”
Our own David Murphy even stating ahead of his review as we prepare for our coverage that “DOOM Eternal is everything I’d hope for in a title from the long-run franchise, except for the jumping puzzles, which I could live without, but it doesn’t take away the exemplary experience that DOOM Eternal has to offer.”
DOOM Eternal is available now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch release coming at a future date. Stay tuned for our view coming soon.
