Street_Fighter_V_Vega_Intro

As of this week we heard some amazing news from the Capcom team has announced that Vega, the infamous Spanish Ninja, will be returning with the Street Fighter V roster. If you are at Gamescom, Capcom has announced that you will be able to play the clawed ninja in action at the Sony Booth in Hall 7 Booth C-020. The build will also include the recently announced newcomer, Necalli, along with returning characters Birdie, Nash, Chun-Li, Ryu, Cammy, M. Bison.

Street_Fighter_V_Vega_Victory

Capcom has set a Spring 2016 window for the game when it releases exclusively for PC and PlayStation 4.

About Vega
Vega brings with him a brand new set of tricks, as well as a new appearance. Still possessing his trademark speed and quickness, he now has access to two distinct fighting modes: claw or no-claw. With the no-claw style giving him access to command grabs as well as new attack properties, players will need to toggle between both styles to pull off that winning KO at the end of the fight. Vega’s powerful V-Trigger is the Bloody Kiss, which sees him throw a rose at high velocity towards his opponent, before he charges at full speed right behind it, delivering a series of brutal attacks. This Spanish matador is definitely a fighter to keep your eye on, if you can.

Review: Rory McIlroy PGA Tour – When Swings Go Low

Join the Blast Away the Game Review Community on Facebook or Google+
Written by David Murphy

PGA_Tour2015_Sc02

Pros:
+Graphics are more fluid between holes
+Multiple swing style options

Cons:
Can’t import yourself into the game anymore like in previous titles
-Less courses than previous titles
Challenges have nothing to do with the PGA Tour or golf
To earn stat points, players have to go on tour versus just playing

The Rory McIlroy PGA Tour has been out for a short while now. I’ve been trying to write a review on it since I picked up my preorder but couldn’t. I was always told if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything a all and it’s taken me this long to be able to do that.

The game has a few good qualities to it. I like the fantasy Battlefield 4 course. It is not every day that you’re playing shots across the bow of a battle ship. It’s a fun little course to work on your skills but that’s all it’s good for. The option to pick between arcade, classic and pro arcade for the controller is another nice addition. That was one of the down falls to the previous versions of the PGA Tour games. They changed how the cotroller swing set up was with each new version. Unfortunately this was about the only things I found I liked about the game.

In the previous version of PGA Tour you could import your picture and bring yourself to life in the game. This version you can still make your own golfer but it’s from a grouping of preset shapes from a menu. In this version you now have to go on tour to earn your stat points. You can no longer just play the courses and gain skill. For some people this will be a huge disapointment. Not everyone wants to play the tour. You have to pick your road to becoming a pro and play a Web.com tour event to get your card. It really didn’t take much skill accomplish this. How you go to the Web.com tour is beyond me, they really don’t do much with it such as how you got there by going through the ranks, through college, or even how you got to the PGA Tour for that matter. The challenges might be fun for some but I wasn’t impressed. They reminded me of glow in the dark mini golf. I miss the challenges of the old versions where youare trying to make skilled shots or duplicate a feat done on the tour. The last big let down was the number of courses. There are half as many courses to just paly as the previous version.

Ubisoft Announces ZOMBI Coming to New Gen Consoles and PC

ZOMBI_SC_ActivePause_1438271954

Back in 2012 when it was a flag ship title for the Wii U, Zombi became a critically acclaimed survival-horror game due to its limited resources, breakable weapons, and constant struggle to survive against the zombie infestation. Recently, Ubisoft has announced that the title will be available as a digital download for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC starting August 18th, 2015.

With the game launching on the multiple new platforms, it’s time for survivors (you) to see just how long you can survive in the overturned and ruined city of infected London. Just like on the Wii U version, the city has been shrouded in death, decay, and those who were unfortunate and turned into the living dead. Once more, however, it’s time for players to enter the fear-fueled first-person title. As players dive into the game they will be pushed into horror, chaos, tension, and a pure sense of survival as they are pursued by the infected. Thanks to the new generation of hardware, the game will be brought to new heights while gamers are pushed to a new level of horror they’ve yet to experience later this month.

You can view the official trailer here, but do note it requires an 18+ Google account in order to view due to content: Zombi Official Trailer

Review: Lost Dimension – The Tower is a Place Where Losing Friends Happens

LostD_Vita_Coversheet

Pros:
+Strong character cast that brings the game to life
+Highly animated character portraits allow the game to feel as if it’s an anime
+Combat situations play out as a hybrid between Japanese RPG and Strategy genres
+Characters are unique in every way regarding combat and play style.

Cons:
Vita version frequently experiences crashes when WiFi is connected
Vita framerate while in the central hub is almost painful to watch
Leveling system can be difficult for some players

LostD_SC01

Developed by Lancarse and published by Atlus USA, Inc., Lost Dimension is a game that has caught my attention since its launch in Japan last year for both the PlayStation 3 and the lovely PlayStation Vita. Entering into the game at first began to let me see that the game was setup to prepared to self-sabotage itself while luring me in for more. The title pushes players to investigate a team of rather gifted youngsters who are attempting to divulge who the traitors are throughout the course of the title.

The game is clever, truly clever in how it does this thanks to the main villain known only as “The End”. This enemy at times can feel repetitious, annoying, and truly drive you to want to complete the game just upon the first time of meeting him, but what the game does do is lure you in as the story unwinds. Choosing from a team of eleven can be hard at times since each of them have their own powers, combat traits, and even situational uses, unfortunately Sho’s don’t seem all that gifted throughout the game, but regardless of this is the fact his companions do.

Much like any traditional RPG or even hybrid strategy RPG the game manages to follow through with a unique play style that will push fans to explore The Tower in order to take out a host of enemies, and power uses. When stepping out onto the combat floor for the first time players will be quick to note that the game is separated into two types of missions: side missions and main missions. Each of these mission types will allow the player to take on a team of six through multiple turn-based, and heavily action-oriented combat scenarios; here you will control each character for their turn where it’s to attack, maneuver, or activate a device. From here players will take out the remaining amounts of enemies, which at times can be quite tedious, and grueling. During the combat scenarios, players will be able to use basic attacks, Gifts, Defend, or even give some of that characters SANs to another character in order for them to go again. While the battles can be seemingly fun it is unfortunate that they can also grow boring and repetitive rather quickly.

Suspicions (3)

Platform(s): PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita/TV
Publisher: Atlus USA, Inc.
Developer: Lancarse
Cost: 39.99 USD
Release Date: Now Available

To break the monotonous flow and ebb of combat, Lancarse has included a bonding team where players are tasked with interacting with each of the characters in graphic novel like scenarios. Through these bonds players will find the characters helping each other out in combat by assisting with each attack in follow-up maneuvers. This is where team positioning will play a rather important role within the game and ultimately find itself becoming a synchronized factor when players are in combat. While finding combat as well as conversations as fun as I did, it was time to look at each of the characters in the combat scenario where they would shine the brightest. From there I found myself commonly taking the team as follows: Sho (he’s picked by default and locked in place), Yoko, Senji, Himeno, Agito, and Toya. Thanks to each of these characters having their powerful traits, I quickly found myself using Himeno thanks to her fire-based attacks, Sho for his crits, Zenji for his self-buffing gift that copies another characters stats, and so on. My team consisted of heavy hitters and synchronicity between each of them to ensure my team would make it through combat.

After combat ended and the brontide of combat ended, it was time to return to The Tower where I would discuss occurrences with my team. The most important part I overlooked during my review on both Vita and PlayStation 3? That the social links play a VERY important role within the game in order to unlike the True ending, which can only be done by maxing out social bonds. After completing the game this way? I was given a post-credit glimpse of something about “the chains of fate”, which makes me wonder: Does Lancarse plan on a sequel? If so there is definitely a subtle hint about it with this ending.

Visions (9)

At the end of the day, I was sitting flabbergasted and in dismay due to how important these roles were. Little did I know the game would feed quite deeply upon them, I left myself insatiable for the true ending, which lead to once more going through the game and working on the social bonds, which can be truly hard to master. Each conversation can go in good or bad ways depending on the responses Sho gives to his partners. Downside? This didn’t affect the outcome of who the traitor was since it was handed to me like a kid waiting for a slice of birthday cake; or so I thought until it randomized the traitors again in my next playthrough. After stepping away from the social links, it was time to look at the games rather interesting itemization system, which included taking resources gained from combat in order to make new weapons, get healing items, and even get new equipment. This lead to me carefully itemizing each character in order to put them at the peak of their game for each floor.

Leveling up came quite simple thanks to each ability being able to level up more than once, which in-turn unlocked new abilities, and even grew the older ones to peak out at high performance rates than before. This also made combat a bit more interesting since different abilities allowed for different experiences when said and done. Even with this all at hand, Lost Dimension is a unique game that is captivating, fun, and at times completely off the wall. Luckily the wackiness works out into one enjoyable and at times a flustering experience that will make players come back for more in order to complete the twisted labyrinth The End has set before them be it the two week free DLC or the games base missions. In The End the game is a must have for PlayStation Vita owners and PlayStation 3 owners that want a game that they can enjoy on either a pick-up and go basis or by binging it.

Our review is based upon a pre-release version we received from the publisher of the game, Lost Dimension is now available on the PSN store or at local retailers for 39.99 USD. For information about our ethics policy please click here.

QuakeCon 2015 Impressions 2: A Weekend Unlike Any Other

QuakeCon_Star_Citizen

This Fallout Cosplay was fully functional. He also gave out Star Citizen collectibles. Do you know who he is? Let us know so we can give him a shout out!

There’s something special about attending the 20th anniversary of id Software’s famed event known as “QuakeCon”. Last year I was invited to QuakeCon along with several of our former members and it was there that I realized we were becoming part of a large tradition that had been going on for 19 years at the time, and this year – 20 years. As our second visit we decided that we would get our impressions out the closing night; tonight. Starting Thursday morning we went through the normal check-in where we signed for our press badges, thanked the staff, shook their hand, and headed on in towards the exhibition hall where we would stand in line for roughly twenty minutes among the crowd of thousands of gamers who were bringing their computers for the B.Y.O.C. attendance while others relished in the idea of simply seeing what is coming up. While many people were just as curious as we were about what was hiding behind the black silky screen, we quickly turned our attention away only to visit the vendor section. Here we were able to visit booths such as Modders Inc. whom had some of the most beautiful modded computers we’d seen, including one completely modded out in order to fit the Fallout feel. Among these were various other creations.

QuakeCon_Fallout_ModdersInc

One of the greatest looking computers on showcase there and one we wish we could have walked out with as our own.

After a while David and I decided it was time to walk away, look at what’s there and head over to the Bethesda Store booth where we found ourselves quickly shelling out cash for some of the most unique items we’d ever seen; some of them exclusive to QuakeCon 2015 such as the 20th anniversary hoodie, Skyrim themed journal, wallet, and even my Vault-Tech messenger bag, but even a few other small things here and there that would go upon our office shelves. Something that was quite familiar last year and allowed us to once more turn our head as we glanced upon the floors before us. As the first day began to pass we walked around finding where vendors were and what they were up to. We got to once more meet up with friendly faces from the past such as Shannon Robb from Thermaltake Technology Inc. USA, Clay Causin of Nvidia, the guys from Tiger Direct, Altex, and many other companies. As the weekend began to go full swing there was something in the air that makes QuakeCon one of the most unique events that we’ve attended, which is that everyone there is accepted whether you are a new age gamer, classic gamer, or all of the above as gamers discussed how they started gaming in general. Some of them having stated it was because of DOOM, others Quake, some because of games such as Hexen, Heretic, Quake Arena, Daikatana, Super Mario Bros. or simply because they wanted to attend a rather large LAN party that would allow their games to be pushed to the max through AT&T’s gigabit powered internet, which truly proved a lagless experience.

QuakeCon_XoticPC_Dustin

Bombshell and XoticPC’s setup.

As we walked the floor there was something unique about this place as our eye fell upon unique cosplays, computer mods, and even computers being built as attendees began to line up at the Modders Inc. booth. Here we would get to see some of the most astounding computers come to life and fans rejoice the moment they heard the entire unit boot completely up into existence. When walking past these booths there was a lingering hunger for having such a type of computer, but at this time the finances aren’t there, which lead me to admiring the handcrafted work these men, women, and children brought to fruition. While walking along the booths I found myself once more visiting the Nvidia booth where Clay Causin, the team he was with, and the fans were all surrounding the booth in order for attendees to learn about the new hardware, but also the ability to learn what potential their hardware has with these new pieces. Stepping away from their booth after a short while I decided to tail back to where I found the Alienware tour truck, which was loaded with Alienware Steam Machine Alpha ‘Consoles’. There I found myself taking on Mortal Kombat X on Ultra-High in 1080p without a hiccup, and even finding myself enjoying the setup they had. With how smooth the interface and controllers ran, the experience was pleasing, enjoyable, and allowed me to walk away with a pleasing experience after speaking with the Alienware team members.

IMAG0184

After walking between booth to booth, I noticed something refreshing in the air; unity. Something this event has brought through with gamers from all walks of life, origins, and even different preference on game types as well as platforms. Admittedly finding myself as a console gamer, I was amazed by the sincerness that many of the gamers had when learning I prefered console platforms, but found myself flabbergasted by how welcoming they were to my preference. Discussing many of the games we played with them was an amazing feat, but there was something even more awesome, more creative, and even leaking beneath the surface. As the event went on through the weekend I decided to take part in the charity events they had going on outside of the DFW Nerd Night. Instead I found myself donating blood to the American Red Cross where I was awarded a unique water pouch themed around DOOM and colored blood red. From there I found myself donating to the Dallas Pets Alive charity in order to help them fund their cause. Afterwards? It was time to head back to the hotel and relax from the weekend I’ve encountered that included panels for Fallout (4/Anthology/Shelter), Retro to Real Time, and even the panel for DOOM where we witnessed Hugo Martin, Brad Bramlett, Marty Stratton, and Robert Duffy discuss DOOM and what it took to make it once more feel authentic for what it was known for. This is something we’ve become excited about over time while watching over this game for the past few years.

Dustin_and_Umbreon_Cosplay

This Umbreon was one of the few cosplays we saw there along with Espeon and the Fallout guy above.

As the weekend came to an end after a good amount of time spent with DOOM, Bombshell, and Oculus Rift, there was something to be said about the experience I went through, which was one of the best parts of the overall convention outside of seeing friends, making new friends such as Alex Kurikh, Frederik Schreiber, Becky Taylor, fellow gamers, and a community come together as a whole in order to celebrate a 20 year legacy that id Software helped create/A 20 year legacy us here at B.A.T.G.R. are proud to be apart of. We look forward to the next 20 years of QuakeCon and can’t wait to look back on this day as both gamers and journalists.

Hands-On Impressions of DOOM’s Multiplayer at QuakeCon 2015

Written by Dustin Murphy

Rev_Mancubus_1437988261

QuakeCon 2015 was home to one of the most anticipated hands-on experiences of the year. The game? DOOM. Having been in production for half around six years, DOOM has been a game that has gotten heads to turn when the name is mentioned, which has caused a lot of stir since the initial release of DOOM 3 back in 2004. This year at QuakeCon we got to see DOOM in action for the first time outside of the hands of the developers over at id Software. Sitting down with it was just as exhilarating as it was to watch on the large screens from gaming events.

Sitting down at QuakeCon’s booth for DOOM was an interesting ordeal as we were lead in by groups of six to set up our teams, which were named Alpha and Bravo in order to take each other out. Here I was told to put on the Turtle Beach headphones that were DOOM themed (trust me, we need these somehow), set our loadouts, and even adjust the sensitivity for mouse or controller to our needs. Having done so I found myself grabbing the Super Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, and the Personal Teleporter in order to keep out of the way of other enemies. As the countdown began as we are introduced to the map “Heatwave”. Entering into this lava filled factory like setting, the team I was apart of began to communicate, which lead us to quickly taking advantage to moving as fast as we could to get to the Demon Spawn, which eventually allows for one of us to become the revenant in this six minute match. Trying to adjust to not being able to toggle run, I found my character taking to the classic idea of sprint becoming active after a moment’s notice, which felt right for this style of game as I adjusted to it. Much like how I had to adjust to Glory Kills and even grappling onto walls by double jumping or simply jumping up to them.

When moving across the ledges I was trying to maneuver, I found myself quickly unloading my super shotgun into an enemy’s torso before tapping the melee button when he began glowing red, only to find my character sweeping his legs from underneath him, grabbing his arm when he hit the ground, and brutally curb stomping his face in. After having walked away from the glory kill, it was time to head for the Revenant spawn, which our team coordinated to quickly after pushing the enemy back; never go backwards, it will get you killed. As we got into the nitty gritty action, I felt myself naturally reaching for the controller instead of the mouse and keyboard, and once more rushing back into action. Getting my hands on the Revenant was an astounding ordeal as I found my screen turning read, the team turning around and backing me up, and letting the battle ensue. From here I was learning how to glide with left trigger and shooting with right while using the normal controls to maneuver. While rushing forth I found myself shooting rockets off, annihilating the enemies, and then moving off to once more enjoy my time as this brutal enemy that stirred nightmare as a child.

Having been killed as a Revenant, I found my teammates quickly rushing to pick up the drop, and to much of our dismay we found ourselves grouped up around an enemy Revenant who did not hesitate to shoot the floor beneath him in order to dispatch us from around him and gain the multi-kill we provided him with. With a last minute chance it was time to use that Personal Teleporter I had equipped only to find myself very quickly being drawn to an area behind him, but to my disadvantage? An enemy was waiting with a heavy amount of armor pick-ups, the Quad Damage while a team mate was near by using the Invisibility pick-ups. With the six minute timer on a short leash? It was time for the match to get even more chaotic than before. With the Revenant once more having spawned, our team found a heated battle as rockets flew, secondary fires from our plasma guns went off and we watched the enemy teams bodies glow red once more so that they could be glory killed, but it was our team members turn to pick-up the Revenant spawn and turn the enemies team into a bloodied heap of gibblets.

When the timer ran out I found myself staring at the game that could easily redefine a genre it once helped create. Known as a hyper-kinetic game, we once more saw DOOM step away, break the cliche that titles such as Call of Duty and Battlefield have created by once more becoming a visceral, large-weapon filled, and fast-paced title that feels just right for its 2016 release while running at a buttery smooth 60fps at 1080p, which is just what this game delivered on during its hands-on pre-alpha demo at QuakeCon 2015. All we can say? If this demo is just a taste of what’s to come, the bigger image is going to be beautiful, and something that will set a new par for the first person genre as it dances a fine-line between oldschool and contemporary mechanics we’ve become used to. DOOM will be a must have when it launches March of 2016. Are you ready for Hell to be unleashed?
