Nintendo has officially confirmed that the cumulative sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite have exceeded a total of 15 million units sold.
As of today, Nintendo of America has revealed that their console, the Nintendo Switch, has become the best selling console in North America in 2019. The handheld-console hybrid has officially surpassed its 15 million mark, a total percentage of 20% year over year.
According to the report, Nintendo has attributed the success of the console to continued software support including this year’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Mario Maker 2, and Astral Chain.
Nintendo still has an even stronger lineup on the way with upcoming titles including Pokémon Sword and Shield, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and a currently in-development Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore, the latter set to release in 2020.
“As we enter our third holiday season, Nintendo Switch is creating smiles and enjoying broad appeal, with more than 15 million consumers across North America playing their favorite games whenever and wherever they like,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “And this holiday, we are bringing Nintendo Switch owners even more fresh and unique entertainment experiences, like Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, adding to the system’s large and diverse library of games.”
Currently, a bigger part of the Nintendo Switch’s success, according to the metrics, isn’t just the fact Nintendo isn’t selling games, it’s the fact many of their games, namely titles like Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, have sold over six million units since their release.
Many of which remain critically acclaimed titles that have received high appraise from outlets small and large alike. Their continued support of third-party titles and indie-titles alike help continue pushing the Nintendo Switch’s success forward with games such as Stardew Valley from ConcernedApe, Cuphead from Studio MDHR, the Overcooked! series from Team17 Digital Ltd. and Untitled Goose Game from House House.
