Tim Willits, one of the most renowned men from id Software parted ways with the studio on July 28th. As of this week, he has joined the ranks of Saber Interactive as Studio Director.
After a 24-year stint at id Software, Tim Willits parted ways with the studio. Willits has become known for his work on titles such as DOOM, Quake, Rage, and Wolfenstein franchises. Now, he’s turning a leave, joining Saber Interactive, a developer best known for titles such as NBA Playgrounds and World War Z
Willits took to Twitter on Monday, announcing the news of having taken over as Chief Creative Officer for the studio stating, “I am excited to announce that on August 1st I became the Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive. I will be leading the creative vision of our five studios around the world.”
In an official press release, Saber Interactive explained Willits’ role as CCO for their company stating, “Willits will help shape and expand the creative vision for Saber’s five studios around the world.”
Willits will inherit teams stationed in Maplewood, New Jersey; St. Petersburg, Russia; Madrid, Spain; Minsk, Belarus; and Sundsvall, Sweden. With their portfolio, the shift doesn’t come as a surprise as they focus on many different types of games ranging from the offroad simulation game Spintires: MudRunner to ports such as The Witcher 3: Complete Edition, which is headed to Nintendo Switch later this year.
“This is a studio which has proven its ability to respond nimbly to trends and community across multiple genres time and again,” Willits said in today’s press release. With an already having a heavy focus on first-person shooters, it comes as no surprise that Willits is looking to expand his portfolio and create games his son will enjoy.
We met up with him at QuakeCon 2019 where he was in the BYOC, not taking press questions, but simply enjoying the show with his son and their friends. With already a hefty amount of games in his background, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of visions he helps bring to life over at Saber Interactive in the future.
