NPD Report: Spider-Man is the biggest selling PlayStation exclusive ever

Spider-Man-PS4-01

Already having received critical acclaim and the possibility of future installments, Marvel’s Spider-Man is already aiming to be one of the best PlayStation exclusives ever made. Here’s everything you need to know.

Since the launch of the PlayStation 4, Sony has a lot to write home about and it’s not exactly hard to see why. They have more than enough console exclusives this generation that has received critical acclaim than anyone else. They’ve even had a lot of success with every single one of them.

Now, on the list is the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has made massive strides for superhero-licensed interactive media; and now, we know why. The numbers are already here and according to the NPD Group, Marvel’s Spider-Manisn’t just a blockbuster title for Sony and Insomniac Games – it’s their best ever released.

Freshly off the press comes the fact that Marvel’s Spider-Man swung quickly into the number one’s sales position, lining Insomniac Games up for making one of the biggest PlayStation exclusive titles in the history of the Sony brand. It stands slightly ahead of SIE Santa Monica’s God of War when it launched back in April.

Adding to the notes, the NPD Group stated that Spider-Man managed to get 37% higher first month sales than all previously released games featuring our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

While Peter, MJ, and Aunt May did rather well, the NPD Group also noted there were several other titles in the recent days that have made a massive splash as well. NBA 2K19 landed in second place and became the game with the highest launch month sales for any sports title game in the history of athletic titles; putting it ahead if both FIFA and Madden games.

Among them comes Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which has fared rather well for Ubisoft and developer Ubisoft Montreal. It standed rather well against last years launch of Assassin’s Creed Origins and even stepped ahead of the recent releases of FIFA 19 and Square Enix’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider – all of which helped round out the top five titles on the NPD Group’s recent list.

Unfortunately, Forza Horizon 4 didn’t set as high as its potential has shown. It only landed seventh on the list followed by the recent releases of Super Mario Party and Destiny 2.

You can see the full report on YouTube from the NPD Group above. Meanwhile, if you don’t want to watch the video, you can also see the list down below:

  1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  2. NBA 2K19
  3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  4. FIFA 19
  5. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  6. Madden NFL 19
  7. Forza Horizon 4
  8. Destiny 2
  9. Super Mario Party
  10. NHL 19
  11. Dragon Quest XI
  12. WWE 2K19
  13. Grand Theft Auto V
  14. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  15. Naruto To Boruto: Shinobi Striker
  16. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  17. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  18. Super Mario Odyssey
  19. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  20. Minecraft

As you can see from the list, recent releases and some of last years releases and even the years before remain relevant. Games such as Grand Theft Auto V and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remain solid selling titles for their respective companies and could continue doing so in the upcoming years. For now, however, we don’t have exact numbers for console sales and should have an update from the NPD Group rather soon.

For those curious, Marvel’s Spider-Man is now available exclusively for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. Meanwhile, if you haven’t, you can check out our review today, where we scored Marvel’s Spider-Man at a 10 out of 10.
